This is an excellent song. He never recorded this song, except for this performance. I think it would have been a big hit for him. His songs are badly needed these days.
My mom and dad once had a cassette tape with Dermot playing Fields of Athenry. Hands down the best rendition of the hundreds I've ever heard. I can't find it anywhere. Don't know the name if the album but it also had Dutchman and Leaving if Liverpool on it. If anyone has it ease post.
As the daughter of Irish grandparents who are long gone and their son my dad .. who has spent her whole life in NYC .. this song is amazing .. talk about capturing a time .. thank you! My grandmother was from Carrickmacross and my grandfather from Greencastle in Tyrone they both died when I was a child but I’ve found our people there .. which is how I found this video!
My brother-in-law, Terence Winch, wrote this song - both the music and lyrics. It was first recorded on a Celtic Thunder album (NOT the current boy band, but the ORIGINAL Celtic Thunder, a trad band founded in 1977 by my husband and brother-in-law.) It's a fabulous song and I hate it when Terry isn't given credit for it.
He was an unappreciated talent...a nice singer and n excellent man on the accordion. ...a good fotballer too!! RIP
