I didn't think about doing Work Pants. I discovered after a few tries that Lazy Shell Armor is a liability, as the Def increase really isn't helpful, especially with the hit to Speed, much less the hit to attack. I noticed it is important to get some healing in on the first turn before the Crystals start attacking. Also, I see that you didn't have Bowser in much. His Mag Def is so low that he's just going to die :)
Nah, it's because he lacks good utility. Take Geno and Peach for example, they have good magic skills, AOE dmg moves and healing respectively while having good physical attack power themselves, which I used in the second phase of the fight. Mallow served his purpose for nuking the Fire Crystal via weakness hits and chipping off some AOE damage with Snowy before he died. I had Bowser took over for a bit just to activate his+Mario+Mallow's Triple Move which deals multiple elemental attack to hit each crystals with great damage, but he sucks for everything else. Bowser's party buff is also underwhelming for this fight, Phys Def's kinda mid since Culex uses mostly magic attacks.

Can't you just do mongo damage to Culex and cause all the crystals to break at once to rez him, denying him of their buffs? Haven't tried it myself though to see if its faster.
For the fire crystal, it makes sense because we cannot use water moves, so I logically affects it. As for water, idk why fire affects it.
