I get corn belt land being high priced, and you really only see a few head on little tracts that would be too rough for row crops, or in CRP, but I’ve been grazing cover crops for 20 years and put 1/3 of my ground in rest every year, which is heavy forage production with heavy grazing. I can’t see a path to success raising cattle on stubble and buying / selling at the sale barn like they do out west. I run 1000-1100 head including all of them and they are a significant part of my fertility program. I’m direct to consumer and 2 yrs backlogged.
Cow size vs. profit - Are the larger cows in your sample mated to proportionally larger bulls or the same size bulls as the smaller cows are ? Is this a factor resulting in the calf's declining % of the cows body weight ?
