    Now THAT is a review. No nonsense. No propaganda/advertising.Thanks you, sir. Just ordered one and looking forward to meeting it, on Friday! Thought I'd check some reviews. Thank you for this. Can't believe some of the previous reviews I have watched on this instrument, on youtube. This is what I was looking for.

    The addition of the degrees on the rotating bezel does make this an improvement over a, say, Cammenga lensatic. Also, the bezel is free moving rather than clicked, and the degree scale is accurate to the degree, rather than to 5 degrees, all of which are pretty big improvements. The clinometer is a tiny bit useless for hiking and orienteering (maybe only useful to measure the height of things). But the one thing that's missing from most compasses is the see through capsule with reference parallel lines, like you can see on all baseplate compasses, which make them ideal for map work.

    The thing that makes those great compasses is how easy they are to use with the lens eye piece. I had to go into the deep dark mountains around my states that is the one I would take over all the others I have and I have many. They are a good value and low price for a great compass.

    Hi Dumitru. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I have just examined my compass once again and yes the black section is not much use as it is very difficult to read. You seem to have obtained a compass which is not as well made as mine. The problems you describe are not present in my compass. Perhaps your compass was made by another manufacturer. May I suggest that if your compass fails when it is new that you get rid of it and buy one that will last in the field. I have also made a number of map reading/navigation videos for beginners that are avaialable on my channel. I hope this is of use. stay safe. best wishes. Nigel

    How you use the spider lines, for measuring angles or distances? I find for, but I don't find any information about these lines. I have the same compass model/issue. The graduation are single, ten lines at right and left of a major cross line with two little triangles for alignment. But what is the value for each step? are they on mils, or degrees?

    Hi. Just found your videos. Informative & clear. I have one of these exact compasses, the instruction manual that comes with it is vague to say the least. i am confused as to what the markings are from left to right on the sighting glass & as I mentioned already, the instruction manual is useless. Do you or anyone else have any idea how these markings are used?

    • @pnyarrow
      @pnyarrow  3 года назад

      Hi Wayne. Thank you for watching and commenting. You are dead right the manual is useless. I am not certain what the markings are for but as this is a copy of a military compass it may be for judging aim off for 'windage' or estimating the size of objects and spaces at a distance. I slang the instructions ages ago so I can't refer to them anymore. I'm sorry I can not be of more help. Stay safe in these troubled times. ATB Nigel

    Sir. Just saw ur video. By the way, very well done! I'm interested in how to identify the magnetic variation that I'm told is in all compares? Is there a field test that can be performed?

    • @pnyarrow
      @pnyarrow  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Sorry for the late reply. The only test I know is to maesre some angle/take bearings on a map with a protractor then take them on the ground with the compass. When you average out all the differences they ought show you the difference between the map angle and the magnetic angle which is called Grid Magentic Angle but is often wrongly called 'magnetic variation' Hope this helps Stay safe. This is a copy of a much more expensive compass. It resembles a Francis Barker (UK) except maybe the inclinometer. For someone who wants to experiment a cheapo makes sense. They all point to magnetic north. It isn't like the cheapest are pointing the wrong way. You can check it against the North Star. The good ones are built better, but some are up to $500£.

    Hi,
    First, I want to let you know that I am learning about land navigation (almost 0 knowledge). But, in my opinion it is a waste of money. At least mine. First, when I open it and I put it on a flat surface, is wobbling. At the back, the informations are written black on black wich make the reading almost impossible. The clinometer is also wobbling. I tighten the screws but the other part can't be because they install it without using screws. The aluminium bezel can be pulled out easily and the fluorescent disk fell off. The metric ruler from the side is 2mm short on the entire marked length. The markings on the disk are accurate on the left side but 2mm short on the right side. I didn't check the clinometer. Overall, heavy aluminium alloy case, maybe aluminium bezel and the rest is plastic

      Hi Sorry about the late reply. I think the best thing to be done is either send it back for a refund or throw it in the bin. If you can't trust your compass then it is of no use. stay safe. ATB. Nigel

    What is wrong with GPS and Google maps? Anyway, just kidding, silva make good compasses, I still have my one from my uni days. For the general public a compass is pretty worthless I would have thought, in the event of some major crisis what is one going to do with it?

    • @pnyarrow
      @pnyarrow  5 лет назад +4

      Hi Roasthunter. I still use my 'old' silva and recta compasses but I am not 100% happy with them althoughh they are suitable for most things I do. Even if many people do not know how to use a compass that does not mean we have to leave them in ignorance - please see my early 'Prepper Survival Mapreading' series of 3 videos and my later' Prepper Survival Grid References Made Easy' video. At the very leat a compass may stop you going in the wrong direction in a strange ar stressful area.

    These China clones are cheap copies of a great german precision compass, the WilKie Meridian from the 1930ies. Is was one of the first compasses with a thermoelastic capsule to prevent bubbles. It was manufactured with small changes until a few years by Kasper & Richter an now as a cheap copy with an lens system instead the real prismatic system. Price of the original k&f was around 120€. And yes, you're right, even the copy is good.
