lol omg, Jen! So relatable with the meltdown! Being vulnerable is so wholesome and I actually love it when RUclipsrs are, because it means they have confidence in themselves, that they love themselves, and they're not afraid to be themselves. They are un-apologetically them and that's what makes you great! I have definitely had those moments though of screwing up, being hangry, and having PMS play against me all at the same time and yes, it ending in some kind of meltdown probably more times than I'd like to count. I always laugh about it later, ya know after I've had a pizza or something. The video was wonderful, as always, and thank you so much for pushing through adversity to give us this. The pieces turned out really well, and even though you pointed out a flaw with the yellow skirt, that outfit was still my favorite! Also shout out to Mike for being a really supportive husband and helping you get through this, just thought he should know.

Clear nail polish or school glue can stop the the fabric from Fraying. Or you can buy fray check at a fabric store

Yes I have freaked out over nothing...more than once. I remember wanting that machine. My mom just said no. My grandmother was horrified by the machine and told me if I wanted to learn to sew she would teach me when I was old enough. When I was not quite 7 she taught me. I like how your outfits turned out. I was surprised how well the gluing seemed to work. Tell your daughter, I think her outfit is really cute, please. Thank you for the video.

@@NexJen Yes, she taught me and generally I liked it. I continued sewing, and mostly sew for utilitarian reasons, like repairs or a quick costume for a kid's play. I did sew all 3 of my daughters' prom dresses. That was fun. They designed, and I tried to create it -- mostly successfully.

If you where make more clothes with the patterns, use a FriXion pens/highlighters to trace the patterns. With those pen/highlighters, the ink disappears with heat. My sister love using those when making outfits.

Tailor's chalk can work really well as well if you get the kind that comes with a brush on the other end. It usually comes in a variety of colors, so you can avoid it showing through if you need to leave it in place, but it also 'erases' with the brush so you don't need to risk heat, if your fabric is heat sensitive (though I third the FriXion suggestion when the fabric can take heat. Those pens are some of my faves in general)

The "Miracle Stitch" cartridges were most likely liquid latex! A lot of companies still make a liquid latex glue, usually called "liquid stitch" or something along those lines. It works pretty well, and has much less drying time than fabric glue 😁

On Thanksgiving I was making a Dutch apple tart and had gotten the lattice top perfect. Put it on the oven, and then remember i didn't put the egg wash on, so i went to take it out so I could do that dropped the whole thing into the bottom of the freshly cleaned, 400f degree oven. I sat on the floor sobbing my eyes out while scrapping burned crust and apple out of the oven. I managed to salvage the tart... But as I was showering while it was cooling, the dog ate half of it off the counter. 😅 I guess it was good 🤷‍♀️

  • @PhoenyxAshe
    @PhoenyxAshe 3 года назад +13

I, um, actually had this thing when I was a kid. Five-ish, if I remember right. The machine, the basic patterns, and the Barbie clothes patterns as well. It worked... okay. The glue cartridges did the job, but in addition to drying out quickly, they also had a tendency to clog and gum up during the "sewing" process. I wound up making more of the projects later with either hand sewing or early machine sewing.
I would later go back and made a basic quilt using one of the quilt block pattern sets that came out pretty well. Well, technically it was a pillow pattern, but it worked pretty well as a quilt block. I think I still have the doll clothes patterns floating somewhere around my house... 40+ years later. Nearing 50... yikes.
One of the things to take into account with getting the clothes to fit and be able to put on easier is the original fabric used. The majority of the fabrics for the doll clothes were very stretchy double knit. The patterns were designed for that type of fabric which was all over in the '70s. Trying to use a woven material, or a not-as-stretchy fabric, you'd want to expand the pattern some. I'd opt for tracing the pattern, _not_ marking the glue lines, and sew or glue along those outer lines. Probably with an ugly fabric first as a test.
Which I rarely do myself, because I'm also seriously ADHD as well, and usually wing it.
    A lot.
As for meltdowns, I won't go into details, but I can remember breaking the rails of a roll-out keyboard tray... several times.

Jen, remember that we learn far more from failure than success. I say this from a place of great love as a person who grew up being told to never fail. I still fear failure myself, but I'm learning to accept it. Highly driven people are often taught that failure is unacceptable, but that's the worst possible approach! We need to fail and get frustrated and sometimes have a breakdown and cry over nothing. Afterwards you pick yourself back up and pull yourself together and try again with renewed strength.

Wow that was quite a tale at the end of the video. I guess this machine was more trouble than it was worth, but you still got fabric and patterns and outfits out of it, so that's something. Plus you restored a thrifted doll. I think a couple of outfits came out kinda cute in that old-fashioned type of way. I'm a little bit disappointed that the box says "It's so easy!" instead of "It's SEW easy!", a missed opportunity for wordplay.

Hey Jen! I really enjoyed this video, and could DEFINITELY relate to the melt down! I'm also an adult with ADHD, and I'm a comic artist who used to earn most of her income selling art at conventions- so you can imagine the late nights, forgotten essentials, and after hours meltdowns in the hotel room. I think grad school was just one big barely concealed meltdown to be honest, because I'd be downing Kitkats by the handful, sobbing on the phone to my then boyfriend (now husband), and hunched over a lapdesk and comic pages well into the wee hours of the morning. I definitely would have had a cry if I'd worked super hard on a video only to have my doll ruined, the clothes melt, and I'd skipped a couple meals to try and get it done. I love your reviews and cheerful demeanor- they keep me company while I'm drawing and painting.

Omg your excitement for this whole process had me so excited too. It's too bad that the machine didn't work but your method of making it work was pretty darn impressive! I was laughing so hard when you were trying on the outfits and Barbie was just not "playing nicely" to put it gently. After all, Barbie is supposed to be a team player. On a side note, I'm so sorry things took a turn for you when you were simply trying to make Barbie all fancy. Girl, I would have been bawling too after all that hard work and dedication cause I'm the exact same way that you described and when things don't plan out, I have a total and complete meltdown. So if you buy yourself some icecream to make yourself feel better, no judgement here! Just saying! Oh P.S.- I got all the LOL Tween dolls because I liked your review so much and omg they're so cute!

I really want to find one of these for my toddler because he is ADAMANT about using the “toys” mommy plays with, especially her cool sewing machine with the knobs he can turn/turn the light on and off on. As it is I had to get give him my travel clothes iron to keep him away from my actively-used steam iron (he thinks it’s a car because I run it all over the table. Toddler logic is valid 🤣)

my great grandma would make my mom doll clothes when she was young and even made me some clothes when i was really little, but my grandma never cared for it, and my mom refused to let my sister and i learn how to sew, or even taught us how to crochet (her excuse was that she was left handed, but truth was she just didn't want us "wasting time" on it.....so.....beginning of 2021, i started learning how to sew and crochet and i learned faster than both my mom and sister, which apparently makes my mom mad because she stopped responding to me sharing my projects i was working on over the past 10 months. but it is what it is. i am enjoying it and am hoping that sometime soon i feel confident enough to sell them. i don't have room in my tiny apartment, or money, to buy a sewing machine, even a small one, so everything is stitched by hand. i've fooled my neighbors into thinking i bought the outfits i've made, and when i told one of them that if they had any old clothes they didn't want anymore, i could turn them into doll clothes for the grand kids. well, she gave me 5 large trashbags full of old clothes and i have been turning them into fabric for creating doll clothes. lol.

The two outfits with the skirts are so cute, I'd wear those!
This was a fun video. I remember when I was a kid I had a sticker making machine and there were supposed to be refills but none of the shops carried them and it was before we had internet, and I couldn't just use clear tape because of the way the machine was shaped, that was a common thing for the machines like this, liquids would dry up and things would run out and then you'd just have a weird non-working machine.
I had a cold, and had finished a day at a job I hated with said cold, dropped my last yoghurt on the floor which burst open and splattered everywhere, ended up yelling "NOOOO MY YOGHURT!" and wailing on the floor so loudly that my mum had to come in and was very confused, I couldn't even move she had to clean it up. I had no snacks left so I just had to go to bed.
One time I wound up crying because I couldn't beat a certain part in the Bratz game I was playing, I literally did it like a half hour later, which probably wouldn't have taken as long if I hadn't gotten so broken up about it.
Brains are a funny thing, I love how open you are about this and how you own your behaviour and are realistic about it. If I had a £ for every time I lost it over something and it turned out a big part of the problem was that I'd got hungry and not noticed, or some other factor besides just the immediate spark on top of my handful of mental health things, I'd be considerably better off. You seem to handle it with grace and turn it around after though, and that is considerably more admirable that just not having fraying emotions in the first place.
Sorry for length, I can never seem to be concise!

Awe, Jen. It's okay! I have an obsessive compulsive personality, and breakdowns are a thing, especially for cute projects that don't work out. Hand stitching definitely works better on doll clothes. For button up doll dresses and shirts, we use snap fasteners instead of actual buttons because they lay flatter.

Excellent video as always! I think the outfits turned out very cute. Completely overblown meltdowns, I came home late from uni where I’d been studying for midterms, I cycled home, it was hot and I was tired. When I went into the bedroom I shared with my boyfriend there was unfolded laundry all over the bed. This was something that I had asked him not to do multiple times in the past and for some reason it pushed me over the edge (probably because my brain saw it and was like, “now we have to fold all of that and pack it away”). Anyway, I walked out the bedroom, slammed the door, fell to my knees and started crying hysterically , much to the surprise and confusion of my boyfriend. We can laugh about it now but at the time…

I have done a lot of seamstress work but even with experiance my fav method of "sewing" is using iron on fusing tape. You can cut it to the length or thickness desired and use an iron (on the right setting for the type fabric used) and it works fairly well. Most can be washed and I have even made several costumes (adult sized) that lasted for a long time. Just a quick option.

@NexJen best fabric glue is beacon clear fabric glue. For waistbands you will need needle and thread and safety pin. You can glue around a BBQ stick leave and opening on both ends. Sew one end of elastic to one opening end and put safety pin on other end of elastic and feed it through Waist band. And sew it can be sloppy it will be on inside. The end of elastic to the other end now sinched in. And glue ends shut on fabric. And your done.

I feel your pain ^^" I really love this video, though, because you get so creative in it, and the idea that you made doll outfits with your daughter, thus encouraging her own creativity, feels so precious to me. I wish my mom had shared some moments like this with me.
Also, not a meltdown or overreaction really, because I can't remember any right now, but I think this will make you feel better: actual sewing machine. Me making a skirt for my beautiful legs. Needle goes in the fabric, then out. In the fabric, then out again. Why did I decide to pull on the fabric, I'll never know, but needle goes in my finger, out, in again, breaks inside. I look, blink, and SCREAM AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS BECAUSE THIS IS SO FREAKING PAINFUL LIKE 10 ON THE SCALE I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT PAIN!!! Next thing I know I'm bawling at the chemist's where they help me remove the needle, and on my way to the emergency room to get it check, still sobbing pitifully. One of the worst experience of my life. No bone broken thank the gods, but I've endured so much pain since then, I have fobromyalgia, I've had gallstones, kidney stones, nothing ever topped the pain of my finger being sewed >

This reminds me of an old neighbor I used to have, I had to have been 4 or 5, definitely before I started school, and we had this older woman, maybe about my mom's age, that had a huge doll collection, lots of vintage stuff. She made almost all the clothing for all her dolls. I'm not sure if she made the patterns or had a kit of some kind but I remember having several of her hand made pieces for a long time, and she even tried to show me how to start making them myself, with needle and thread. Unfortunately my interest in the fiber arts (sewing, crocheting, knitting and such) didn't really take root until I was in middle school.

I have been to that point. it doesn't matter if the thing you're crying over isn't that big of a deal, if you're over stressed enough it starts to feel like the end of the world. I think everyone has been there. it's okay, sometimes you just have to feel what you're feeling and go through it. there's nothing wrong with that. the only time it becomes a problem is when that's your reaction to every single mishap or mistake.
the doll clothes turned out cute! I honestly started using a combination of fabric glue and hand stitching to hold together my doll clothes when I make them for my Blythe doll.

My sister had one of these, and I only got to try it once. I remember the glue being like Krazy Glue (cyanoacrylate?), and it came out in irregular gobs sometimes. It was a freaking mess. I remember the fabric being so weird feeling, and to get the clothes on, you pulled up from bottom, but with arms down at sides, sliding arms into holes as you pulled up. I wish I still had the patterns though - they were pretty easy to use, even though I couldn't read yet lol. We had a professional seamstress in our family, so we learned how to hand stitch at an early age. Like, I had a doll that was about the same size as myself, "sewed" her a dress (reshaped one of dad's old t-shirts) , and then I could put it on lol.
You could probably glue the whole thing with Fray Check, and definitely do all the edges. I think on the purse, we turned the edges of the handle under and glued/stitched by hand.
On that fabric glue, were you supposed to heat set it? I think there are some that you need to iron to set.
I totally feel your freak out pain - I have issues with hypoglycemia, and lack of food will make me hysterical.

    • @NexJen
      @NexJen  3 года назад +1

Oh wow you sound like you are a stitch pro now! I checked the glue it doesn't appear to be heat set. As for putting the clothes on I tried to shimmy it up over the hips with the arms down later on during my clothing swaps. That part didn't make it on video but it stretched and pulled at the seams. I m gonna practice hand stitching now though so 🤞

Thank you so much for being velnerable with us and sharing your meltdown, it's so awesome to see the reality of things behind the camera.
I can relate to the meltdowns so much, before I went on to my current medication I would literally cry over the smallest frustrations, such as having tech issues, I know what to and how to fix whatever issue but the fix doesn't want to work. Just anything that wasn't going the way I wanted or needed it to go.
A prime example being growing up I would literally cry in the middle of class if someone was even remotely mean to me... This would continue until around the age of 11, safe to say I was a VERY sensitive child.
Another exampe, last year we were having pretty bad internet issues, and since the majority of my friends are online and overseas internet is important to hang out with them, so when the connection issues started getting bad I ended up having a pretty bad meltdown even though looking back on it now it was of course frustrating, but not the end of the world like it was in my head.

Completely relatable lol I have ADHD & OCD I remember one year about 2 days before Christmas I decided to make a Yule log completely from scratch. It took about 3 hours because I had made everything by hand, the whipped cream with no electric beater, homemade chocolate ganache, even the cake itself was all from scratch & because of my OCD I have a need for things to look perfect. Well let's just say it didn't look very nice & my ganache was a little bumpy it seems so small now but it was just enough to put me into a complete breakdown, i mean on the floor bawling my eyes out, hyperventilating, the works lol i just wanted to throw the whole thing away. I remember my dad telling me "it still looks good" but in my mind it was horrible it took a bit to calm down & compose myself. I can look back now & see how much I overreacted lol 😂 everyone even liked the yule log so it was fine in the end. I think everyone has those moments from time to time it teaches us how to pick ourselves up & try again, my mom always says your never to old to learn from your mistakes or hardships that's what makes us human 😄

I feel you T_T. There are days I can legit sit down and cry because I screw up a tiny little thing I was excited about XD.
You can try a bit of hydrogen peroxide on the stain. Apply it with a cotton swab and let it sit in the sun (not a hot one, something like in mid-morning) for some minutes (just keep an eye on that, don't leave it there for too long), then wash it with shampoo or detergent. It sometimes works with stains in plastic if they are not too deep into the surface.
I also think you can trace the pieces on some plastic (like those you save from toy packages) and use it to help glue the pieces of fabric. Like having it to the size of the garment without the seams so it leaves the seams around it, then you secure it with paper clips and glue around it (not sure if it makes sense), this way the fabric will not be so flimsy and it is easy to glue without really needing to look around for the tracing (although you should trace the outline and place the plastic mold on the inside).

It's a good example of 'sometimes the seemingly easy solution will bring more hardships than necessary' 😅 Reminds me of the time I wanted to DIY my Cheryl Blossom Halloween costume with thrifted clothes to save time and money, but I ended up having to spray paint everything bright red. Hours of hard work later, plus a big red mess all over my bathroom, I still had an unsatisfying finish product that didn't even last the whole party. Meanwhile, I've found a totally decent store-bought costume for 20$ but I had already spent to much money on my Cheryl DIY and I'm to proud to quit projects so I kept on going 😬
In the end, I had loads of fun at the party because I met other people with Riverdale costumes, but it was a hard lesson about my adhd fueled ambitions and the stress that they bring! I'm better at taking shortcuts after that!

Sorry to hear that things did not turn out the way you wanted them to, but NEVER apologize for washing your eyes! you are allowed to have emotions too! good and bad!
I´m kinda the same way when things doesn´t go as planned, it´s like my Autistic/ADHD brain doesn´t allow failure, even when it´s the first time I´m doing something, and when you start out all pumped and positive and everything goes down hill....eeks! lack of food and pms´ing on that, emotions are bound to erupt.
Even tho everything you went through for this video, it still come out really good, and enjoyable :) I wasn´t even thinking about the doll, your creations were the highlight of the show ;)
Since the doll cloths are so small, I actually find it easier to just sew them...and they are perfect to practice on too since you wont waste that much fabric if it doesn´t work out :D

I have been there and those moments suck. But recently I've been shown a new way to look at those horrible moment of ugly crying on the kitchen floor. You needed to cry. You weren't being over dramatic or being overly emotional. Your body was stressed and sometimes that's all it can do to cope. It's a genuinely good thing to be able to get those emotions out. Suppressing emotions can actually worsen the stress and increase your heart rate. Eventually creating anxiety and even high blood pressure. So cry your eyes out, you are absolutely fine.

I’m very sensitive and I cry over everything, I’m very anxious too, so I feel like I understand what you went through :,) but the comment that Alex Davis did is right, you put the emotions out and it feels better, it’s healthy hdjshjd. The footage was impeccable at my view, and at least you did it! I’m always so scared of not being able to do things that I just never try, I just go back to bed and sleep to avoid it, it’s really sad, anxiety sucks, I’m working on it tho with therapy. But you did it! Even if it doesn’t work out (not exactly the case) you tried and put effort in it. To me, that’s really brave and encouraging, makes me believe I can do it too, and that it’s okay to fail, things doesn’t always work out AND THATS OK, I keep forgetting that, the pressure I put into myself is very bad and it takes away my joy into doing things. What I mean is, thank you for sharing this experience, the good and bad moments, I’m trying to do doll customization, and this made me more excited now to keep trying. Also I draw, and I’m quite good at it, but lately the pressure has been so strong I’m not being able to feel much joy, and drawing is my life, is how I express my self (besides crying and laughing a lot gnjfnfj) so, again, thank you for sharing those moments, I feel that I’m not alone, even tho it’s not exactly the same feeling I think, it still helped me. I'm so glad that this helps you to see we all put pressure on ourselves and that not everything turns out. I hope when you are ready you enjoy your customizations and return to drawing and would love to see your projects. Art and expression is a super great way to escape when we do have anxiety, dressing, stress or anything really. It's my coping mechanism. There is a lot that I don't do because I stress out before I start or overthink it. My anxiety has never been so high as it has the last year and a half and I just really wanted to enjoy things again.
I hope that you can also find the motivation you need even when things start to fall apart and a breakdown occurs.

Interesting concept but I think learning to see would produce more reliable results. I hand sewed doll clothes when I was about 5 (with help of course). If using glue rather than sewing, t shirt fabric is probably a really good idea - the stretch will help the clothes to go on easier and it doesn't fray.
PS - I insisted that my Barbie had underwear, my mum sewed some out of old pairs to use the waistband elastic at the top rather than trying to sew on elastic. That could also be a useful tip - not the undies but using old clothes that already have elastic attached.
