The biggest difference between the west and the east about cultural fascination (IMO) is the west always feels like it’s taking only, reappropriating it for gain. The culture is a resource to be mined, not a library of knowledge.
When Japan does it, it feels like they want to deconstruct it and add onto it with their own flair, giving back to the community it borrowed from. There is a sense of underlying love for the product instead of the profits

I lived in Japan in the heart of the now denim capital of the “world.” One of the things I learned is the lifestyle aspect. Not for IG and anything online, but to learn about manufacturing, materials, and design/fit. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s ageless. You can always enjoy it. My 2 cents.

I Sorry in advance for this chunk of text I
    To: Reggie Casual,
Can you please make a video about counter-culture and its impact on fashion. I have continuously seen counter-culture, sustainability, and 'cut and sew' thing becoming more and more apparent in fashion and has become an acceptable mediam. Your personal favorite brand, Visvim, has also been inspired by the American counter-culture(hippie style) in the 1960s, to be more specific Native American culture. I have watched your previous video "Is Luxury Fashion Dead?" as well as the other video on COVID-19, the potential of a new wave to take over the industry is just a matter of time. I think counter-culture will take over Luxury fashion and become the next trend. I really want to see you make one more video on -- how you view the Fashion industry being heavily inspired by counter-culture and for how long you think it will hold its ground?
Hope you blow up soon, you deserve it,
    From: your dedicated fan

That's how cultures are shared and propagated. Whenever there are 2 cultures in contact, they'll start influencing each other, regardless of which one is dominant. In a globalized world, it's unreasonable to expect every culture to stay in their lane.

I've been rocking Japaneee labels for a long time now. But, it's usually been the bigger brands that have been established. Being in the states, I've always had to purchase on-line, almost exclusively from END. or HBX. And, it's just the big name brands. Finding underground brands to purchase is damn near impossible. I love it, but it's not as accessible as I'd like.

For me the proverbial Japanese style is authentic and organic. Some countries do this xyz fashion out of copying or getting “inspo” from a kpop idol or something but Japanese in general dress this way because of a feeling and like you said of the lifestyle that they are in.
I must say one of the most memorable fashion moments when I went to Tokyo was the normality of fashion in their daily lives. regular “mums” wearing the latest Prada bag etc but their outfits are lowkey and basic. I find that appealing and refreshing somehow. They dont wear deisgners to , lets say, brag or be instagrammable. compared here in Australia wherein it’s mostly about “ look at me” kind of vibes. Hope i make sense here haha

as a white/native mixed kid i always had issues w cultural appropriation, because on social media and stuff you see ppl calling out anyone for wearing x type of clothing that don't belong to their culture, for example,, but where i live I'm so used to cultures being mixed and the economy working around ppl selling their knowledge and skills they got from their cultures, the discussion sounds so strange when i compare it to real life.
In first hand experience the natives on my mom side make a living out of selling their products to mostly European descents/white/white passing ppl. But they never see it as something negative but rather them sharing a piece of them and other ppl appreciating their art expression and skills.
When i went to the coast on vacation a couple summers ago i saw young women from Senegal doing braids for a living. And you would see all types of women and girls getting them. didn't matter if they were white or asian or anything. Ofc (and specially since i'm pretty white passing) didn't wanted to ask them directly how they felt about it bc it'd probably would made them feel awkward or just plain uncomfortable. But it did raised me questions since i personally really saw myself sideeyeing those thin blonde hair girls getting braids.
My brother also has friends from India (who live there) and one day the subject about Gwen stefani came out and they all said it was cool someone liked their culture.
Part of me gets that ppl who didn't suffered repercussions for their culture (bc where they live it's their own culture or wtv) might not feel that as appropriating? bc for them those things will always belong to their country/religion/+
But at the same time,,, i saw and experienced having really inaccuarate conceptions about certain cultures bc i was heavily influenced (as a kid for example) by media who was whitewashing those stories or just giving plain incorrect facts.
Like I've seen kpop fans seeing dreadlocks and being like "omg it's like the hair [insert kpop idol name] wore on that MV!" or Vogue choreographies that where referred as a "kpop challenge" when those things have a huge meaning in their cultures.
I appreciate that japanesse street fashion is making their own out of their inspo and creates their own separate thing with their twist, but the conversation always leaves me with questions haha tho i know we will never find peace with this discussion bc humans are complex and there's no way a whole group of ppl will have the same opinions just by belonging to the same group even if they share life experiences and culture value.

I believe we talked about this point a few weeks ago. "Creativity by limitation." Perhaps the Japanese are more focused and rather than quickly jumping into a the new fad they invest in their wardrobe, make it connect to their tastes/personality and then create new subgenres of fashion by being focused and invested in their preexisting interests.

    • @yangl123
      @yangl123 4 года назад +8

"Lifestyle" meaning the difference in the subculture metas in west vs east... in the west "streetwear" can be considered a subculture in and of itself, where people bond over their choice of clothing, whereas Reggie explains in the video that in Japan much of fashion seen in Japan is an extension of some individual subculture, rather than "streetwear" being the subculture itself...

according to reggie lifestyle: a style of clothing for the shape colors and fit that someone wears regardless of their habits, and just for their personal likes...
*lifestyle definition: activities and habits that define the mode of living of someone*
my first cultural shock when i first moved to japan and later to korea was that you could meet someone who can be dressed as a skater but hasnt ever skated a single time in their life.
i'd say not everyone, but the majority in asia doesnt dress accordingly to their activities and habits (skate, music, etc etc) thus their fashion doesnt match their lifestyle to a strict definition... but to reggie's subjectivity it does.

That was a great video. Even covered cultural appropriation WHILST understanding the reasoning behind it (which doesn't mean one must agree with it), rather than just saying that Japanese people don't care so it doesn't matter, because there's more to it than just that. Which doesn't mean that in the "west" you can't take inspiration from other cultures, it requires more than that to be seen as somewhat problematic by certain people.
A lot of people are ignorant on the topic though and they think that the very act of wearing something from another culture, is problematic. But the main problem is hypocrisy in a society, rather than the problem being with the individual who wants to wear something from another culture. Like, when certain people are allowed to wear certain things and it's seen as fine and cool, but then when the groups that the style came from do the same thing, it's seen as a bad thing, etc.
Though just entirely yoinking a cultural outfit for your own financial gain, is seem as pretty questionable especially in the "west". Because of history, and it's also just kinda dodgy if not enough alterations have been made to make it their own (inspiration).
    Something like that!

I know you're trying to avoid the instantly demonetizing but can you make a video about what's going on in Japan? Not in fashion but with the outbreak and the lock down. I'm half Japanese and I want to know what's happening from a non CNN or Reuters.

japanese always look fresh and they do deep dive into their culture/style that they like, but from having lived here also for a number of years ive come to notice with most of my friends is that they always have a go to outfit for when they go out into certain areas. so they end up always wearing the same piece. i think the problem out west is that we dont want just one good looking outfit we want everything so we just keep buying pieces (hyped) or not just to have stuff. which then transitions into not always having a nice outfit because you want to wear your newest stuff i guess.

What does "deep dive" really mean

It's to really immerse yourself in a sub-culture. From buying from specific shops, wearing specific clothing, music, hanging out with certain crowds, possibly going as far as even learning how to play an instrument.

I think fashion is going to end, because of what is going on. I’m selling everything I got. Pretty soon it ain’t gonna be worth a thing.

It's important to remember that things do and always change. Fashion can't "end", but it can change.
The world isn't ending, most if us will live through it and most likely grow from it and place more importance on things that matter.
Fashion is fine. The real question is, "Are you fine, as in healthy?"
That's the most important thing. And if you do plan to sell everything that means you have enough confidence that fashion will in fact continue. ~Reggie

THE CASUAL I just want to say I love your channel it’s fresh and new, not like others always pumping out the same content.
I’m super healthy but mentally all of this is taking a tole. I live in NY and people are dropping like flies. Allot of people aren’t grasping what is going on. I’m selling what I have now because people are to foolish to see what lies to come. There going to get a check and blow it all away but what comes after is what they don’t see. All this cloths and shoes won’t mean a thing. I think this is god putting us back in our place we where being to full of our selves not thinking of the times ahead. Reg I hope your rite. This time will come to pass. But what will be left I do not know. God bless be safe.

Fashion will never end because people always want to look good even if the world crumbles around them. The world has been thru harsh realities before, World Wars, Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, this too shall pass.
