"Crystal Ball" was the title track from Styx's sixth album, released in the fall of 1976. This album represented the recording debut of the band's new guitarist Tommy Shaw, who also took lead vocals on this track. Although the album stalled at #66 upon its 1976 release, it would go platinum in 1978 after the success of the next album The Grand Illusion.
The track "Mademoiselle" was Tommy Shaw's vocal debut and the album's Top 40 hit. I guess I'd heard "Lady" before on A.M. radio, but it was "Mademoiselle" (also on A.M. radio) that I remember liking enough to pick up Crystal Ball and after one spin of the record, I knew this was a band that I'd be listening to alot! A very short time after picking up Crystal Ball, I also bought Equinox. I'd often play 4 sides of Styx straight! Of course this was all before The Grand Illusion launched the band into the stratosphere.
I made my first Styx video for "Castle Walls" way back and have been wanting to upload another since then (especially since so many people seemed to enjoy the "Castle Walls" effort so much). I had actually started videos for two other Styx tunes ("Man In The Wilderness" and "The Grand Illusion") way before this one and fully expected to have one of those two finished before I started my fourth planned video for "Crystal Ball".

I saw STYX in 1976 at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby "Philadelphia" I was 12. It was great.

With the current situation I've found myself in, I've never been able to relate to this song as much as I have now.
Styx was the first rock band I had the pleasure to see in concert. It was during their "Pieces of Eight" tour, and the show was phenomenal. I love pretty much everything Styx did up to and including the "Cornerstone" release, and Crystal Ball is one of my favorite songs of theirs. That said, fantastic video, Guru! The masking, effects, and slide / video choices are perfect for this song. Great job!!!

I actually did "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)" already...planning another Queen tune, originally planned to follow up with "Drowse"....now leaning to "I'm In Love With My Car" or something else from Night? Cheap Trick I also did one for...my absolute favorite by that band, "Gonna Raise Hell"...wanting to do try something from In Color next. Heart....got a plan for "Little Queen", but several others are tempting!

I could imagine a video of this song chronicling Tommy Shaw's life from his beginnings (First verse and chorus), his joining and tenure with Styx (the keyboard solo), and the rest of his career (guitar after the keyboard to the end).

Actually, my friend, it was (bassist) Chuck's twin brother (drummer) John Panozzo who died in 1996 and it was from cirrhosis of the liver....although Chuck is indeed HIV positive, he is still with us.

Saw them at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby PA in 77, Great first concert. A trip to the balcony for some papers and over to Mario and Gino for a slice before walking home. Pica's still has the best Pizza. Sacramento Pizza sucks.

I can't keep telling you how much I love what you do. I would give it a go, but I know my OCD with perfection would only frustrate me more than enjoying the journey of adding vision to songs I have fantasized to as a teen. If I could ask you to put together a video to the Best Of Times. I believe the current affairs of today would be great moving visuals for this song. Definitely familiar with News Of The World and for that album it's always "Spread Your Wings" that I think about first, but yeah...."It's Late" might be great to play with...it would be a great one to edit some video around....fun, fast and dramatic cut points it would do most of the work itself! :-) Now you got me thinking!

Yeah so the Ballerina is something Dennis Deyoung wrote based on Claire de lune, to really understand this you have to go to Alabama and grow up in the deep south. Have seen this many times live in the 70's and 80's. Great live song!
Dude, I lived in Alabama for two years in Huntsville, working for Intergraph in 1990-92. Tommy Shaw is a guitar hero in AL, and deservedly so, inducted to the AL music hall of fame. He inspired my acoustic playing, and STYX would not have sold 4 platinum albums without him. Imagine, you are in Montgomery Al, playing bowling alleys and STYX calls you up for an audition in Chicago. Imagine JY being the way he is. Then you write the headline song for the new album!
