We were ready to go photographing when the Geldingadalsgos volcanic eruption started. In this video we hike to Geldingadalur walley on the first day of the eruption. This was a unforgettable adventure. It is unreal to stand close to a volcano.

    Hello Gudmann & Gyda,
I so appreciate the fine work that you put into this wonderful video! Of all the videos that I have seen this is the best. Your beautiful photos and the steady, well filmed video and editing are top rate. No silly music or stupid soundbites, but good information and authentic appreciation for this once in lifetime moment. I will not be able to visit this event, and your film really takes me there in a classy way. Thank you very much! Be safe.

We travelled to Iceland specifically to experience a volcanic country last year , we had the most wonderful guide an a level geology teacher nick, who was so passionate about Iceland and the activity you are experiencing in your vid.we a year too early . Thank you for your exquisite shots and vids. It has made my evening watching this most beautiful eruption. Wishing you well from Wales and the Brecon Beacons x

The most impressive thing about standing on the top of an active volcano, near the cone, even if not in effusion, is the dull rumble that is heard, a powerful rumbling that enters the body. I was unable to sleep at night after the visit. I kept feeling the dull vibration inside my brain ...

@@hansfrankfurter2903 I felt good, apart from the very cold even with a sweater (It was July).
But that was a long time ago, I was 27, in full health. We went without a guide. With my friends we took the cable car up to about 2-2500 meters. Then a not very difficult walking path. The craters were two, one smaller, but very close. I am not able to remember if they were the 2 top cones or the side ones. On the edge we looked out with great caution, to see in depth but useless. The terrain is very dangerous, light and crumbling, you can slide without suitable shoes. Many small dark stones. The Martian landscape is more reassuring. A few fumaroles but no lava in sight. But there was a loud and powerful rumbling coming from the bowels of the volcano, the noise enters your body as vibrations.

Only the Icelanders would call an eruption a tourist trap. I would definitely come. But I would need a helicopter. Your pictures are wonderful and your care for visitors safety is commendable. I have met a few Icelanders and have found them to be great fun. I’m sure a credit to your outstanding “little” island.

Describing this as an opportunity for the tourist industry was one of my first thoughts when the scale of the eruption became obvious. A large enough eruption to awe and inspire, and yet small enough to be relatively safe to approach.
Oh, and your comment about Icelanders is spot-on.

Totally AWESOME EXPERIENCE for you and all of Iceland!! I know personally the wonder & fascination to visit it closely. Lived in Honolulu Hawaii, on Ohau years ago for during the Big Islands Kileaua Volcano activity that reached the ocean. Several visits with family and colleague's and once during their total eclipse in the late 1990s, also was safe enough to hile to edge of the main crater, now all collapsed with 2018 eruption. Officials let us get as close as the heat would allow, incrediable experience!
One visit hike with work colleagues to where the lava was entering the ocean, I & a buddy climb down the 4 meter high bluffs to the newest black sand beach with glowing lava chunks floating in the waves! A once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Incredible to have these live video feeds from your volcano which is just absolutely awesome itself cheers from the United States! eruptions.

Was anyone else wishing they could be at the front of the Lava flow to feel the lava evaporating the crap out of the moist ground? I love this feeling. It's so satisfying for me when I dry my coffee percolator on a really hot stove and all the steam whooshes out of it.
