I was sweating bullets that game plus i had the flu that week.
My Vikes dominated the Ewes from 1969 to 1977. 8-2-1, 4-0 in playoff games including the 2 NFC Championships in 74 and 76. I'm convinced that Bud Grant's disciplinarian style and the lessons to the players to ignore the elements paid off in all those playoff battles between the Vikes and the Ewes in those years, including the 1977 Mud Bowl in LA in a driving rainstorm! Lol
The Ewes lost the SB to the Steelers 31-19 didn't they? Hardly a close "heartbreaker". In contrast, the Vikes lost a hard fought defensive struggle in the 74 Super Bowl 16-6 Steelers. It was only 2-0 at halftime, and 9-6 early in the 4thQ. Vikes had a real shot to win the game, recovered a fumble to stop the Steelers final TD drive, but the fumble recovery was reversed, refs claimed a whistle blew the play dead! So if a 12 point loss was a "heart breaker", the Vikes L to the Steelers was a "nailbiter".
When the Packers played half their games at Milwaukee county stadium both teams were on the same sidelines, rumour has it some of the best fights took place there 😂
At 13:06 you get a clear view of Pat Curran absolutely moving before the snap. I do not remember seeing any kind of replay at the time that showed him moving. But now all these years later, I can see the penalty was indeed legit. Now, on the other side...it did not look like Dryer was offside.
Alan Page was constantly called OF because he was so quick off the snap and the refs thought he must have been ahead of the snap. From the replay on the Dryer OS its not an angle where you can tell one way or the other. He was definitely moving before any other player. Sorry Ewes fans, you had many chances and you didn't take advantage. Vikes dominated you from 69 to 77. 8-2-1, 4-0 in playoffs. Get. Over. It.
Remember it well, I believe with the wind chill it felt right around 18 degrees that game...cold yes but not nearly as bad is it could've been and had been in that stadium for many other games. And definitely cold enough to bother the Rams whose players did comment that it had an impact on their performance. The Vikings absolutely had a strong home field advantage at Metropolitan Stadium that was lessened once they moved into the climate controlled dome.

In fact, I think they psychologically beat themselves when traveling north to play in cold weather. They were soft. The "Fearsome Foursome" wasn't very Fearsome vs the Packers and Vikings. Merlin Olson, Deacon Jones never beat the Vikes in the playoffs, never won a Conf or League Champ, never played in a Super Bowl.
Under today’s rules, this game would have been in Los Angeles. The Rams and Vikings had the same record and LA won the regular season meeting. This was back when the NFL rotated hosting sites among the divisions, regardless of record. It changed not long afterward.
No kid loved the Rams in the 70s more than me. I still have hate for Dallas and Minnesota. Atleast the Aztecs won the NASL championship that year and Garvey got NL MVP but that did not help much. These losses were gutwrenching.,
You probably believe in the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bumny too. The Ewes were soft and couldn't win cold/bad weather playoff games. 1967 vs Packers in Milw 1969 vs Vikes at Met 1974 vs Vikes at Met 1976 vs Vikes at Met 1977 vs Vikes at LA Col (The Mud Bowl) The Vikings were 8-2-1 vs the Ewes from 69>77. That's complete dominaton for a decade. The Ewes were Hollywood soft and not tough enough to win those games against the disciplinarian Bud Grant. That was the difference.
I knew for sure that the vikings would lose to Pittsburgh and Oakland back then, cause the Rams were the better team, mistakes beat them, not Minnesota
Well they beat Raiders 24-16 in 73 regular season, 1976 Steelers 17-6 and Dolphins 29-7 regular season. Those teams didn't make mistakes Vikings thrived on in Super Bowls. They blocked a punt for a TD in IX and also in XI but they fumbled ball away at 3 going in against Oakland. But hey, they got there. And they could beat Dallas and Rams to get there.
Not many teams were built to beat the 72/73 Dolphins. The Vikings should have beaten the Steelers. The Steelers were a conservative run first offense in 74, and didn't yet have a big time passing game. Bradshaw was still a work in progress game manager. The Vikes D was every bit as good as the Steelers D. The 74 SB was 2-0 at halftime, and still only 9-6 Steelers into the 4thQ. Still a very winnable game. The Vikes recovered a clear fumble as the Steelers were driving in the 4thQ, only to have the frigging refs reverse the fumble call, claiming a whistle had blown the play dead. The Steelers then scored the clinching TD and the momentum the Vikes could have had at 9-6 with the ball was gone. The Raiders game......I'll just not comment.
The Vikings. The most opportunistic team I have ever seen every time. They played the Rams. All the breaks would go their way. They never outplayed the rams but the rams made mistakes and that ball would find a Viking when it was on the grown.
Ain't it the truth! As a kid watching these big games I just could not believe what was happening. They always seemed to have some huge big play, only to be stopped at the one or two yard line, then somehow manage to not get the TD and in this case even a deflection so they couldn't even get a FG. The blocked punt taken back 98 yards for a td in that one game. The one time they do get to play the vikings in LA the field turns to mud and they can't run the ball at all. Too many examples to list here. I somehow feel they should have stuck with Harris and not gone to pat haden
Vikings had to convert those opportunities into points ,and the Vikings defense weren't merely not engaged into not being responsible for forcing some of those turnovers ,they outplayed the rams ,especially in crucial game altering momentum shifting moments on more then one occasion in several post season contests ,making it a common trend ,not a exception, they quite frankly answered the call to arms when the game was inthe line by performing better then rams, regardless of some stats ( besides final score) which probably were on the rams side .

Why were the front of the Rams pants a different color than the back?
Different material
@@collinrust2641cmon man. Anyone knows the real reason 😅😅😅
The smoother silkier front faded with cleaning
James Harris was a great QB for the Rams
"Great"?? Hardly.
Did Harris trot off with a broken ankle?
My Purple People Eaters absolutely dominated the Hollywood Ewes from 1969 to 1977. Vikes were 8-2-1. 4-0 in Playoff games.
1969 Western Conf Playoff
Vikes 23 Ewes 20 @ Met
1974 NFC Champ
Vikes 14 Ewes 10 @ Met
1976 NFC Champ
Vikes 24 Ewes 13 @ Met
1977 Div Playoff
Vikes 14 Ewes 7 @ LA Col
Combine that with the Ewes loss to the Packers in the 1967 Western Conf Playoff in Milwaukee, that's 1967>1977 the Ewes could not beat the Central Division in the playoffs and the Ewes could not win in cold or adverse weather in the playoffs.
Had several Viking player posters on my bedroom wall as a kid. Real football
At 15;44 Fred Dryer would have been called for unsportsmanlike conduct in today's NFL
Hank stram was great like noll and nowadays the Kansas city cheifs coach andy Reid
Tom Mack never moved.:_)
Look how boss my RAMS look in those classic uniforms and helmet. It's a shame what we wear now...a total abomination.
The Royal Purple Vikes unis with those awesome horned Purple helmets were better than the Ewes.
One of the most painful games in Ram history.
Minnesota should have NEVER moved into a dome. So dumb. The cold was a huge home field advantage
Under today’s rules, this game would have been in Los Angeles. The Rams and Vikings had the same record and LA won the regular season meeting. This was back when the NFL rotated hosting sites among the divisions, regardless of record. It changed not long afterward.
Is that true? They rotated? I was not aware of that rule.
@@DavidSilva-fq7nt That is how Dallas 10-4 hosted 12-2 Rams and 12-2 Vikings in 1973.
@@TheCollierjr I saw 13 so I guess I wasn't paying attention to that. Thanks for telling me.
That changed the next season.
Yup.
I remember the 15-0 Miami Dolphins had to go to 3 Rivers stadium to play the 12-3 Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game.
Nice coverage. It's no wonder the Queens lost to the Steelers. That was some sloppy football in perfect conditions.
No kid loved the Rams in the 70s more than me. I still have hate for Dallas and Minnesota. Atleast the Aztecs won the NASL championship that year and Garvey got NL MVP but that did not help much. These losses were gutwrenching.,
I was A rams fan a kid, but I believed then and now that the better team lost in 74 and 76
You probably believe in the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bumny too. The Ewes were soft and couldn't win cold/bad weather playoff games.
1967 vs Packers in Milw
1969 vs Vikes at Met
1974 vs Vikes at Met
1976 vs Vikes at Met
1977 vs Vikes at LA Col
(The Mud Bowl)
The Vikings were 8-2-1 vs the Ewes from 69>77. That's complete dominaton for a decade.
The Ewes were Hollywood soft and not tough enough to win those games against the disciplinarian Bud Grant. That was the difference.
What do Viking fans think of Metropolitan stadium.
we dont we tried to forget fast
I knew for sure that the vikings would lose to Pittsburgh and Oakland back then, cause the Rams were the better team, mistakes beat them, not Minnesota
Vikes weren't built to beat Dolphins/Steelers/Raiders
And the vikings never ever won the superbowl that old school shit was over hyped you treat people like men not property
Only two time Superbowl losers. Lol
Now this was football not the garbage we have today
