I think one of the reasons his vowels are so wide is that he’s from Jersey, and you can hear how even in his speaking accent that his vocal posture flattens and widens the vowels and pushes them to the front and sides of his tongue

I love, love, LOVE MCR, but Gerard’s live vocals are painful sometimes, and it’s mainly because I think he’s not singing in his range. Now, I don’t know everything about vocals and such, but I know enough to know that he’s straining his voice a lot and covers it up with screams and the like. People make the argument that it’s “emotion” in his voice, and while I partially agree, I also know that he is way too out of breath, is unable to sing his words clearly, and he goes too crazy on stage to stay in sync with the song. His voice just gets too choppy and it’s a major turn off for me. Sorry if I offended anyone; just speaking my mind.

Gerard's that kind of a singer, who could sing so well if he was really concerned if his singing is technically perfect. But he's style is more emotionally driven and he sometimes compromises because of it. But nothing wrong with that since his ability to portray emotions so well is the main reason, why he is so loved as a singer.

I was at a Silverstein show last night and between Hawthorne Heights's set and Silverstein's set, they played Helena in the club. A guy at the bar asked if they were still around and I had to break the news to him.
Whoever made the video he is reacting to did a terrible job. They cut off clips right when he was about to hit an impressive note and then split up single performances into random parts of the video instead of just going performance by performance.. what a terrible clip haha
Also there were some really amazing performances too that showed more what he could do vocally which Im surprised didn’t make it in... example: the acoustic performance of Helena
he's a really difficult singer to emulate because his voice sounds so unique, so even when people sing with the same techniques and style they still sound nothing like him. maybe it's the raspiness?

While I love seeing you react to Gerard's voice, I feel like this compilation of his live vocals wasn't a very good one. The AOL sessions audio was great, but the rest of the clips were too short and jumbled to get a really good indication of what he sounds like live. The acoustic session they did for 98.7FM is really good, since the instruments are stripped back and you can really hear him. Of course, The Black Parade is Dead! concert vid is awesome as well. But if you were a fan, you know these things already. 😉
God Gerard's voice is no different live than in studio. It's the same. Yeah, there were some times where he maybe tried to twist the vocals or even pitches of the song and it didn't quite work as well, but it goes to show how talented he really is. Whereas many singers sound so different live than you normally hear from the studio, you can tell My Chem didn't need almost any vocal editing whatsoever. It proves that there really is real talent in the world, and that true talent can be recognized just as much as those who sound so different live. Also G-NOTED Oh, and Gee's voice, especially live, singing Cancer and I Don't Love You makes me cry. Every. Single. God. Damn. Time.
G's vocal quality really depends on if he's sober. During his dark days he was often fucking TERRIBLE, which is no surprise. But when he's clean the man is bloody angelic.

Kenzie Dream Star his audio is still worked on. Secondly, auto tune doesn’t wildly effect your voice until you throw it way off. Like the correct note is 4 steps away.
Auto tune isn't the only thing done to vocals, and even the best voices are going to be altered to push them the extra mile. Gerard as with most every vocal artist ever recorded in the digital age is heard through a myriad of effects and filters anytime that's not live, and even live recordings still use enhancements like reverb and EQ stuff. Sound people's job is to make the singer sound as good as possible, live or not, just the same as the performer is intent on giving the best material to work with.
The fact that Gerard Way has such a vocal capacity that he can do screaming songs as well as gentle lullaby type ballads makes him such a great singer as well as his very large vocal range in general.

He walks such a fine line.. He can sing 'straight', but often sounds pained, strained, 'lazy', makes odd stylistic choices with pronunciation, cracks his voice, goes off key (especially live), howls, wails and screams, but you're so caught up in the emotion you're all over it. It's what makes him unique.

I’ve always thought G way was such a talented singer. I saw him live front row and was not disappointed. He doesn’t just throw vocals together. My parents who are both music majors could say it better than I . But Gerard is not just like the other kids throwing together some vocals hoping they will make sense. His new song “baby your a haunted house,” is so good. Very different.
I know Gerard's doing great as a comic book writer right now and I'm so proud and happy for him but I hope he never stops making music cuz he's a truly gifted and one of a kind singer

Auto tune isn't the only thing done to vocals, and even the best voices are going to be altered to push them the extra mile. Gerard as with most every vocal artist ever recorded in the digital age is heard through a myriad of effects and filters anytime that's not live, and even live recordings still use enhancements like reverb and EQ stuff. Sound people's job is to make the singer sound as good as possible, live or not, just the same as the performer is intent on giving the best material to work with.
He absolutely uses pitch correction both live and in the studio. There are many different types than autotune. It’s not a bad thing, everyone does it.

The fact that Gerard Way has such a vocal capacity that he can do screaming songs as well as gentle lullaby type ballads makes him such a great singer as well as his very large vocal range in general.

He walks such a fine line.. He can sing 'straight', but often sounds pained, strained, 'lazy', makes odd stylistic choices with pronunciation, cracks his voice, goes off key (especially live), howls, wails and screams, but you're so caught up in the emotion you're all over it. It's what makes him unique.

I’ve always thought G way was such a talented singer. I saw him live front row and was not disappointed. He doesn’t just throw vocals together. My parents who are both music majors could say it better than I . But Gerard is not just like the other kids throwing together some vocals hoping they will make sense. His new song “baby your a haunted house,” is so good. Very different.

I saw them live three times and every time Gerard's voice was phenomenal. And you can tell how much his voice has grown and his technique has developed from when he first started compared to now
