When I look at J4 I feel like I would really enjoy playing him, but then in game I feel like I do negative damage with him. Hopefully this video helps learn me some things I'm doing poorly.

thats exactly how i feel, i try to pick him up every few years and feel the same everytime

you dont do high damage on j4, damage isnt a good indicator of how useful you are to your team when playing j4

j4 with out ability is really limit on dmg. thats the problem. But his reach with EQ is what make him playable. if not because of jg clear. i even want to build a full tank jv to eq in, walk out. wait for eq to do it again for all the time.
He is the opening character. not DPS. and tbh if you play right in your elo. even assassin wont lead dmg. dmg dealer is for laner character who wait for teammate to open and deal some easy dmg. some feed laner can deal a bigger dmg than a good intiator or fed assassin. its not something to be ashame of.
Like. compare to a 1/10 jayce who keep shot cannon from distance vs a semi jarvan/red kayn. of course he do better dmg. Not to mention low elo usually fight small combat for no reason. its make their total dmg output higher than a jv who risk their life whenever he really do dmg.
