    Can you make an STL into a sketch? Once I make the mesh to a solid, then refine the image, I end up with a nice solid, but I can't figure out how to make it so that I can constraint the lines to add the dimensions and end up with a working sketch. This way I can put the dimensions into a spreadsheet and make the part parametric. Can you help?

      Thanks for your comment! We'll cover how to convert an STL into a parametric sketch in an upcoming video. Stay tuned!

    Is it not quicker just to make new sketches and use reference geometry?

      Absolutely! While creating new sketches and using reference geometry can be efficient for certain tasks, the purpose of this tutorial is to delve into the realm of STL file edition and modification tools. Sometimes, you might already have an STL file with the necessary dimensions or features, and you need to edit it for your project. FreeCAD's capability to modify STL files and convert them into solids is invaluable in such scenarios. It saves time by allowing you to work directly with existing designs rather than starting from scratch. So, while the approach may differ based on the situation, having these features in FreeCAD expands its utility and makes it a comprehensive tool for various design needs. Thank you for your comment.🙂

      @@Learn-Engineering I can imagine with more complex geometries the workflow you mentioned is really useful. Thanks

    What do you do if it will not convert to solid? The option is there and clickable, it just will not convert. I have converted others with no problems, but this STL file just won't. I then follow the rest of the instructions but cannot edit the file.

      I actually figured out why I cannot convert to solid, just cannot figure out where to go from here.
      The file I am converting is a hinge with multiple solids and convert to solid will not work on a hinge. Any suggestions?

      Sorry for the delayed response;
      If FreeCAD operations aren't functioning as expected, it's crucial to ensure that your model is properly converted to a solid. Despite the option being clickable, some STL files may present challenges during conversion. To address this:
      Check STL Integrity: Verify that the STL file isn't corrupted or contains errors. Use external tools to inspect and repair if necessary.
      Adjust Settings: Experiment with conversion settings like tolerance and resolution within FreeCAD to optimize the process.
      Review Error Messages: Pay attention to any error messages during conversion. They offer insights into potential issues.
      By addressing these factors, you can enhance the likelihood of successful conversion and subsequent operations in FreeCAD.
