My brother and I rode our motorcycles to the top in August 1989, it was snowing above 8,000 ft. and there were 4 inches of snow at the top. The temperature at the bottom was in the upper 90's. Most all of the high road was gravel/dirt. I'd rather ride back down in the snow on gravel than the pavement.

I loved Pike peak when we went 2 years ago. Awesome drive up. We had to park in the same lot because of limited parking up top. There's still construction going on. That's way they are doing the shuttle to the top. I did like you did on the way down. Lower gears and when we got to the spot where they check your brake temp, mine was at 76*. We were in a F250 with the 7.3 power stroke. I have enjoyed the trip videos. Keep them coming. Dave

I made the trip from Fort Worth Texas to Pikes Peak in 1976 on my motorcycle. At that time the upper half of the road was gravel and went all the way to the top. The gravel made handling the motorcycle through those switchbacks more difficult. By the time I got to the top I felt a little tipsy from the altitude and exertion. Thanks for sharing your experience!

It rains in the afternoon at altitude. You need to get to the top before noon.
I used to guide up longs peak, about 1pm the weather changed. By 3pm, it's sleeting rain with 40knot freezing wind wiping water off the ground making tiny, flying ice razor blades. You learn that lesson quickly.
If you're still in Colorado, check out roxborough state park. It's free and amazing!!! It's a little south west of Denver.

About 8 years ago I drove up Pikes Peak while traveling between Pueblo, CO and Goodland, KS. It was a beautiful drive, but I did not think things through. I was in Pueblo replacing batteries in a couple of 50 Kva UPS units, and I had 70 batteries about the same weight as car batteries in the bed of the truck, yeah, that is about 5,000 lbs of batteries....
We stopped on the way back down at the visitors center and the rotors on the brakes were glowing a nice cherry red, and I was in 1st gear 90% of the time. We hung out at the visitors center for a while letting those brakes cool down. But the road is a bit scary, there was one guy so terrified that he was practically scrapping the rocks on the inside edge away from the cliffs.

For your future high altitude climbs above about 9,000 feet, I recommend taking Vitamin E. It will help bind the oxygen to your red blood cells more efficiently. Every time we go to Colorado and get up to altitude we take it for a day or two before and the whole time. It helps greatly to combat altitude sickness. Never had a day of alt sickness when visiting Colorado.

From 1899 to 1900, my compatriot Nikola Tesla (a great scientist and inventor) build he's extremely high-voltage laboratory right there, on Pikes Peak. The resonant coils that he invented, were able to generate more than 12 mega-volts of AC current, and the emitter ball on the top of the antenna produces the very first radio-wave that goes out of Earth atmosphere and orbits, further in space.
To bad there's no trace of he's legendary lab in today. Maybe there's only a sign as a memory on one great Tesla's experiment.

Now you've driven it, the hair pin and no rail turns can you imagine going up absolutely as fast as possible, the record is somewhere just shy of 8 minutes I believe and if I'm thinking correctly they should have just had the race. And imagine back in the late '60's there was even less guard railing than they have today (and some of the road was unpaved if I'm remembering correctly). Back in the day the Unsers' of Indy fame used to own this race as well as Rick Mears of the same Indy Fame.

    • @Garth2011
      @Garth2011 4 года назад

Depends on the driver. Most vehicles will get up there with the air on but it would seem fair to say, at some point in elevation, it's just going to be much colder and A/C won't be necessary. However, leaving the transmission in D or OD will get you to over heat, using a lower gear will put less load on the engine. Those turbo engines usually maintain well since the thin air is compensated for with the computer sensors and turbo.

@@AbomAdventures Thanks for the great video. Abby, you are trooper!
I also drive a RAM / Cummins diesel crew cab here in Colorado. I've never overheated the radiator even when towing and running the air conditioner. But, until you know your vehicle in these difficult conditions, don't take chances. For mountain descents, I use the engine brake and the tow/haul mode [even when running bob-tailed]. I also lock the transmission out of the upper gears. That is, I set the transmission for the gear that I went up in. Pikes Peak is typically third gear [six speed auto]. Rarely do I have to touch the brakes. I write this not for you, Adam & Abby, as you just proved you know what you are doing. Naturally! Many times when we drive down a mountain road we will see a truck, sometimes a car, with out-of-state plates that has overheated his/her brakes. [Out here, we call those people 'flatlanders', and it's not a compliment.] Be careful driving here, 'cause the mountains sure as hell don't care about you. Don't be someone we read about in the newspaper. Maybe this sounds tough or snotty. That's not my intent. I do want everyone who visits our beautiful state to be able to return home safely.
      Be well & Best regards,
      Gottfried

Wish you could have seen the views without the smoke haze from the forest fires to the west. You should have stuck around for the hill climb, the most awesome motorsports race in the country.

Back about 1966, some friends and I went to the hill climb. Road was 100% loose gravel bottom to top. We happened to be on one of the switchbacks and every car that spun around that curve showered us with gravel. Winning car was an Oldsmobile Toronado...front wheel drive climbed like a cat up a tree and the rear wheel cars just spun their wheels. LOL

13,000 feet wow! I know most pilots have to use oxygen at 12,000 and above. I would have been short winded for sure at 13,000. You and Abby are brave
