Host: Welcome to new IDJ Hot Special. This week we hosted a singer who was absent for almost two years from music scene, singer who thinks he's misunderstood and refused all contact with the media until now. He became a millionaire on RUclips overnight with his new song "Ego". That's of course, Milan Stankovic.
He's back with a song "Ego" he did with Jala and Buba. For 24h the video already had million views on RUclips.
Milan: I woke up late that day and I actually realized what we did. Everything was like we planned and I hope my public will understand what I want to say because my biggest problem is misunderstanding.
- I started to play with similar sound and production back in 2009 when it just has begun to develop so I now decided to put things in right place. And I think the song "Ego" is a perfect base for all that.
Host: Are you egoistic?
Milan: Well, that's one of my problems. It's too intimate question to go deeper in it but I like that we turned it into a song and used in the most creative way possible. I participated in every segment of this project just because when I'm creating something it has to be mega. And I think this is mega. I think. Generally, I'm many-sided, I understand every music genre and I can carry out my feelings. So you can put me in any role, I think I could manage. I wouldn't focus only on one thing, because I can do many things and my public also like that. I think the '90s are back. That's why I wear now these clothes. This is how I feel currently.
Host: How old are those sneakers?
Milan: Old and worn out, but they are Air Max and they fit my current outfit and I like it. I saw this style in Russian music videos and that's it. I'm expensive by myself. You know that the richest people don't wear the most expensive clothes, they don't sparkle. So, talking about material wealth, I have a lot of things that... People I can't talk about myself in this way, you should cut this.
Host: Milan broke down the prejudices about auto tune with the song "Ego". Because general opinion was that auto tune was used only by singers with bad voice.
Milan: People don't get it. I can't explain to everyone that auto tune is one of the ways to get the sound you want. It's true that some singers who can't sing use auto tune because they have to. Some singers can sing even without auto tune. I like to compose songs like "Faktor rizika", ballads, songs with orchestration and sheet music, but I can also work with Coby, Jala and sing these kind of songs. It's all about how much you know and how much you are capable of. Auto tune is being used in the whole world and it can't deny my voice so I agreed to that without any second thoughts. And I think we managed to carry out the whole idea, because I get messages mostly from people who didn't listen to my music before or didn't understand me because of many prejudices about me. I had fights with media, I still have some law suits, so it was very difficult to go forward back then. Last year and a half I didn't do anything and people immediately think I failed or something. I have a lot of daily work that fulfills me and that's why I "disappear" sometimes. I would like to be recognized by my work, my music, my attitude. And I think people finally started to do that.
Host: What's that they don't understand?
Milan: That's... I don't know how to explain to you. Maybe I can use Sia as an example, because she's one of my idols. I want to achieve that level where people can understand my emotion, happiness, without looking in the eyes. And that's it. But here, people pay attention to some other insignificant things, bypassing the essence. And I would like we pay attention only to essence.
- From the beginning, prejudices and false headlines in newspapers were part of his career. All that made him disappear from media.
Milan: Five years ago, everything I did, people considered gay, but now they don't. My hair, styling, profiles and everything else that world was offering people here didn't accept. They listened to some orient sound.. Now things are changed and people have options and choices. That's very important, that people have many options and possibility to choose what they want to listen.
Host: What falsehood about you hurt you the most?
Milan: When they wrote that I'm a bad son who didn't want to save his mother from Obrenovac when there were floods. That really hurt me. I mean, you can write all kind of bullshit about me, but leave my mother alone. They went too far. There are a lot of things that hurt me and we are still on court for some of them. Generally, being public figure nowadays in Serbia is very difficult because people from reality shows are popular, prostitutes are on covers of magazines, and everything is so extreme. Some people consider it normal, but I don't. I don't want to part of that society.
Host: Who do you can't stand and the fact they are too much in the media? But, I would like to hear some names.
Milan: It would be very bad for me to oppose to some productions, but I think prostitutes shouldn't be on covers of every newspapers and people know about it and do nothing. Police should only know about that and react on that subject. But people here are used to blood, tears and that kind of extreme and brutal things. And that brings us to abyss, brings us back to the '90s. And I'm ok with that style from '90s, but not with mentality.
Nine years ago, he was the one who was eccentric, with blond hair and unusual style.
Milan: "Blond forelock" was working with Atelje trag back in 2009, saving money for a song "Face" which was in that Lady Gaga style. I brought dancers who later danced with Fifty Cent, gloves that we used in that music video, Lady Gaga used later. So, my point is that if you have the right people around you, you can make something good, even in Serbia. And I was very satisfied with all that. After that Eurovision happened, after that, two years of musical, production, TV bans... So I had to start from scratch. Again. I owe a lot to my public who waited for me, who dedicated their life to me. Because I don't know anyone who could "disappear" for two years and come back to his well-deserved or unearned place, whatever. So that's what inspires me, pushes me forward and gives me hope that we will grow and get somewhere.
Host: Your fans were crazy about your blond hair and I read somewhere that you intentionally dyed your hair and had that hairstyle when you first showed up.
Milan: Yes, yes. The night before that audition I went to the hairdresser, I lied that I was sick to skip internships because I went to medical school. Actually, I went to acting classes until I was 8 and everybody thought I would be an actor. But my family had big financial problems so I had to start working immediately after high school. In spite of that, I had a vision in my head about some new different singer who would show up on music scene. So as I said, the night before audition I went to the hairdresser, dyed this hair, because this now is my natural hair color, and I was yellow as a lemon. So I had to find a yellow cap to neutralize that. And I had prepared sneakers, shirts, stylings for the show. When I went there, other candidates were singing some folk songs, but I didn't know any of it. I sang Zdravko Colic and Zeljko Joksimovic's songs, I listened to them when I was a kid and that's it. And I think... No, I won't suggest anything.
Host: Suggest!
Milan: Well, I would suggest to other singers to change. But we don't need another Milan Stankovic, only some change and experiment from others.
Host: And then there was some Korean guy..
Milan G-Dragon. He is, I think, one of the most popular K-pop singers. I don't know how much you know, but I was invited to K-pop festival here in Belgrade by Korean embassy. Generally, K-pop fans are special kind of people. And their production is way ahead USA, musical, financial and everything else. So, in that period I was ok with comparison with him. My fans were arguing with his fans, they still compare us...

- Although he was very young when he entered the showbusiness world he wasn't blinded with the lights.
Milan: First two years, everything was fun and interesting game for me. I absolutely had no idea about this. People were driving us from place to place to perform, on TV shows, agreed paparazzi videos, we were all the time in the media. Everything was on fire, we were one of the most successful seasons of "Zvezde granda" ever. But I was too young to see the point and essence of it. That's why I was just playing back then without understanding anything, and now I'm also playing but understand the essence.
- In that game, there's one detail he hates.
Milan: Traveling! When people say to me: ,,It's easy to you singers, you just sing for two hours and earn huge amount of money, while other people work 24/7 for much less money", I have to say that I left my spine in the van. My spine is in the van right now. A lot of traveling, every weekend.. I just took a pause the last two months to finish this project, but besides that, every week I go from place to place, from people to people.. I don't think that anyone can be a singer. And today a lot of people with money want be singers. I think we have a lot of singers and it's doesn't make sense. For example, I can't be lighting director. Maybe I like these colors, lights, but it's all useless if I don't know basics of that job and I wasn't born for it. There's a huge difference between what you want to be and what you can be.
- We were watching his photos from Google. He admits his style wasn't always good, like now.
Milan: I will use this opportunity to say in public to people who can urge to remove those old photos from Google, Wikipedia and to replace them with the new ones. They are really bad.
17:30 For example, in this photo, I'm photoshopped and turned into some Chinese doll. Those things can't happen and that's not because of me. You need to have the right photographer who can frame you well and find the right angle.
These bangs up are ok for that time. because I was wearing the same hairstyle all the time and that was some change. That was a period of Solo, Face songs, collaboration with Atelje trag. I had USA tour and I bought there a lot of clothes and wore it here for a year. And two years later, that trend came to our shopping malls and everybody started wearing the same clothes. Next picture: These glasses, no way! But I need some glasses now, definitely. This blond hair is over. Why did you choose only these awful photos? On purpose?
Host: No.
Milan: But I don't look like this.
Host: I know, but these were your promo photos.
Milan: That's what I'm talking about. This can't be promo, this is anti promo.
18:38 This photo is ok. This is the period when I trained the most, ate healthy food in order to prepare myself for shooting music video "Od mene se odvikavaj". When I have something that inspires me, I dedicate to it completely and in the end I don't have any objection. But generally, considering, I'm Virgo, I'm a perfectionist, self-critical person. So, I like only this one.
19:18 And the worst one is this photo where I'm turned into something I'm not. I mean, I get that the photographer sees me as some member of Korean boy band, but here in Serbia with our stylists it can't be. It's just no.
- Milan's path was very turbulent. He has law suits with media, he stopped working with his old associates. Some people consider him brave, others consider him imprudent. However, all his songs are hits and his fans support him whatever he does.
Milan: I'm proud of the fact that my public waits for me whatever I do, and they accept my changes.
Host: What's your biggest mistake? Is it maybe a public relationship?
Milan: Everything that happened caused a lot of bad things. But maybe I contributed to that because I wasn't in good terms with media and didn't want to let them know anything about my private life.
Host: Song "Ego" is much more than a hit, it's a beginning of the new era in Milan's career.
Milan: I can't wait to make new stuff, to keep playing. I wanted to play now and I'm going to do it in the future.
