People kept talking over Simu because... they see Asian man trying to bring up concerns about culture... it is always dismissed that people don't even think about it anymore, it's a reflex to shut down the asian man.

That's how he got Marvel's attention in the 1st place. He tweeted them about diversity and inclusion and inserted the idea of an Asian hero, it's always been self-serving
@@TheZumph You missed the point of the original video. The problem wasn't the product, or even its inventors, it was the marketing. Also, they are literally asking Simu to donate a million dollars to become their investor. He has the right to tell them his opinion.
9:37 Anthony is super spot on with this take. I wish we could see two hypothetical scenarios and determine if the reactions would be similar. #1 These same white business owners are making this product but with a different name and more respect for the origins of Boba while in the pitch, admitting what they're doing can be seen as cultural appropriation but using it as a way to introduce it to the masses in a more Western way that closed off people need as a gateway. Would people STILL get mad at them just because they're white?? #2 What if it was two Asian people doing the exact same pitch they did explaining how traditional Boba has unhealthy ingredients and they are going to push their heritage forward or some shi. Would their fellow Asians get mad at them?
Koreans in my area own a burger chain called LA Burger that has an Asian twist on some of their burgers. Maybe I should boycott because they haven't acknowledged what they're doing can be seen as cultural appropriation.
You are missing the point. The korean burger joint doesn't present themselves as a healthier alternative bc "you don't know what a burger is." In fact, theyre presenting themselves as a fusion, whereas these owners had zero innovation here, like popping boba thats been around since the 90s @@safeandeffectivelol

I mean how is that any different than American movies being changed to be able to be marketed in china. Plus it’s not about asking “is there even a need for this product in the market”. A real entrepreneur asks what do I have an abundance of that I can create a need in the market place for.
I think Simu got his panties in a bunch for the wrong reasons. This company is uninformed and has no idea what theyre selling, but I think cultural appropriation is a ridiculous concept. Joes take is spot on, the problem is not that they “stole from our culture”, its that they made a mediocre and uncreative product while claiming theyre innovating in the market. Im confused by Ryan’s take because Simu’s focus was not really that this concept is not original and the product is not quality, but that they didnt acknowledge the Asian origins of boba on their label and work with Asian people and dumb stuff like that If the difference between cultural appropriation and not cultural appropriation is just whether the product is good then i guess thats fine, it seems like a dumb way to differentiate it
Simu needed more comedy training and less Disney PR training, maybe after Shang Chi 2, he can be more of a troll because with the correct writers, he could be more JK and less Wongfu and Next Shark
I’m Asian and I think this whole cultural appropriation thing is being blown out of proportion. Cultures steal from other cultures all the time in an effort to capitalize on it. If you go to any country in Asia, you’ll find pizza places, hamburgers, etc all over the- none of those businesses are paying homage to where those foods came from. K-pop, which everyone knows and loves is rooted in black music yet we don’t see K-pop stars paying homage to the originators of hip hop. Once we all just accept that the one thing that we share as a human race is the desire to make money, we will have less of these stupid problems.
Let's disrupt kimchi. 😂 and say its no longer korean, we can call, it kimchii with two i's hahaha,, if anyone complains we will just say stop blowing it out of proportion.
Part of the problem is saying your version is better/healthier etc and badmouthing the original in some way No one is saying their pizza is better nor their burger - might be the ‘best’ within an area but not just ‘better’ than
Other non-Italian did not marketed as "PISSA", better than the original and ditch Pizza name, claiming as no longer Italian and mass market as healthier than the original since we don't know what the Italian pizza maker put into their pizza. Cantonese opera does sound rap-like, hence Black hip-hop might not be the first but I did not day Black copy Chinese and incorporate into their music. Pizza and hamburger have a long history, hence every one assuming everybody already know the history and not assuming coming from Asia. Please don't say "Culture steal from other culture", "inspire" and "borrow" is a better word since the stealing mean the original owner does not have it anymore.
Is the issue that they're not Asian, the business idea, or both? I wonder if the outcome would be the same if the only difference was the ethnicity of the owners.
The issue was them claiming it was a better and evolved version of Boba that's isn't even new or original along with calling it no longer ethnical by claiming it is a new original form of "Bubble Tea" which it's only a white label product and is the same damn thing 🫡
If simu wasn’t so insufferable ppl wouldn’t have jumped em Also this isn’t how I feel about him but wat others usually echo - I don’t know him like that
anyone remember the jknews video of kim k and her "invention" of her clothing line Kimono this shark tank episode they're talking about is basically the same as that.
9:45 Anthony's right about this part, because if they worded their presentation more upfront if there taking this to a place with their mission statement to get people accessibility to having this drink out in the market like i.e. they grew up on it, and not a lot of places have this available for people to try outside of where they grew up then yeah go for it, but they didn't and thats why everyone is kind of 50/50 about it. Just wording it better, researching more, group taste studies etc. would have benefited them then what they have now. Also, this is were the parts that Simu gets roasted after he talks about it for cultural appropriation with his culture... It isn't accurate since it's Taiwanese and he of Chinese descent, etc. That's where a lot of people are taking it out on him. Plus, the other crap he tried to get attention from. ... Please deescalate death threats over boba. That's crazy. 16:58-18:06 Joes take is on point too.
Aight, so first off, tea is south asian. Modern day Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is where the best tea comes from. second, Indian food, spices, etc has been appropriated for centuries. Cardamom, paprika, cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, coriander etc etc. and i have no problem with that. Everyone uses them in their food. Europeans, Africans, North and South Americans, etc etc. If you make a product that people want to buy, so be it. Curry from Malaysia to Japan is still curry. It's great. let it be. Same with this boba brand. If it's good, it's good.
I usually agree with you guys ahaha. But boba is Taiwanese. Hes not Taiwanese. Like, its not his culture. Its not "Asian" its Taiwanese. I agree that there isnt much to change about Boba but the cultural appropriation thing is ridiculous. Being Asian doesnt mean you automatically own all things coined by Asians. Like, chill. Its stupid.
You clearly don't understand the history of Boba. It was originally Taiwanese, but it's popularity spread to most asian diasporas around the world. So now it's part of asian diaspora culture in general, not just Taiwanese. A simple read on the wiki page about Bubble Tea would explain this to you, but unfortunately, you're just here to be a clown
The conversation around cultural appropriation in food often leads to contradictions. For instance, do Taiwanese people recognize that the cassava plant, a staple in tapioca pearl desserts, originated in South America, where Indigenous cultures have used it for centuries in desserts like sagu? There’s basically zero acknowledgment from Taiwanese that the idea of tapioca pearls came from native tribes across the Pacific.
Americans should travel more. If not all, most countries do "cultural appropriation" except we don't see that as a bad thing. Perfect example is Spaghetti Bolognese - each country has its own version of it. We have Filipino Spaghetti and it's sweet with hotdogs in it. Japanese, HK and Korean spaghetti are also sweet. If this continues, Italians should sue Americans (all races involved) for "cultural appropriation" for all the Italian dishes they "took". Woke-ism is so sick and dangerous. I really hope it only stays in America
Per Joe’s example about the ramen shop, in this scenario, the French couple did not study for 10 years on boba but did enough to make $600k in profits with its bad taste in advertising. I still have a hard time seeing it as cultural appropriation.
Rule as old as time. Good products produce ignorance of their issues. Bad products amplify them. You don't want to hate something you like and you want to hate things you hate.
I saw this and it was globally a huge topic of discussion. I didn't go into the clip thinking he would be in the right, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I don’t get why they so hurt lol they are making the drink more accessible, kinda genius no specialty shops. And have you never heard a pitch, you gotta make the product sound revolutionary.

Coming to this from an objective angle i think Anthony was way overly emotional calling the judge ***** stupid. And it seems most asians are emotional and not looking through it properly and judging way too harsh. They told specifically their Taiwan partners are big part of their business. These guys try too hard not to b woke but this is crazy when it comes to Asian shit they jump on wagon way too easily.
So you will be okay if they said they will take the Asian out of Lunar New Year and remove the dragon dance and loin dancing because it was making white Christians uncomfortable?!
I believe people don't hate on the other lady is because she didn't try to disrespect simu take and shut him down right away or claim the drink was amazing
Nah. I think Simu was being rude and acting like a self-righteous DEI cop. I can see how their presentation could offend some people. I think they were really trying to hype up their claim to having less ingredients. If you're trying to make a pitch, why wouldn't you try to really try to sell those points. If it's white label and actually full of a ton of crap, then yeah, that's another conversation. IMO, Simu was out the gate hating on them because they're not Asian. I get he wants to uplift minorities and their business but doing so by tearing down others - I'm not a fan.
🤦♂️........I didn't really respect Simu for his other crazy stuff he says too but this one is valid. They called it better and no longer being tied down it's original ethnical culture only for it to be the same damn thing but with them claiming they're better and those other "BOBA" drinks are inferior to theirs on a white label product btw lol smh
@@Kamui916 I can understand if you have beef from their pitch. I think they could had worded things differently. What irks me with Simu is that from the get, he was an absolute dick. Yea, I don’t care. They gotta pay homage to the Asian culture in order for them to sell boba? I’m not looking to buy the product, but boycott? Too sensitive. Jolibee should stop making spaghetti then? Vietnamese should stop using baguettes unless they credit the French every time? When Trader’s Joe uses Ube, I’m not looking for them to pay their respects to Philippines. Chill.
Yeah...i dont see how this is any different than pizza hut, chipotle, or panda express. All they are doing is trying to expand boba to be more accessible to the west outside the asian community.
spaghetti and French-inspired baking baguettes is just one ingredient, not a complete product while Boba contains many ingredients. Vietnamese banhmi using baguettes are not into mass market, hence no need to pay homage as a mom and pop shop

There were some key details that wasn't discussed in this video that went viral with what Simu said.
"That trendy sugary drink that you queue up for, and you're never quite sure about its content., Those days are over with BOBBA!"
using this as their pitch was a big fuck you to all the boba shops around the world.
Simu responds with " hang on hang on, i'm quite sure about its content but continue"
on top of this, they claim it is healthier, then jump to "we have alcohol"...
This was a cash grab that paid zero respect to where the drink came from, their bottle don't mention anything about Taiwan etc.
Thats why they are apologizing and trying to rebrand atm.
Dude, how did you wrote the f word without having your comment deleted? I cant even write down words that sounded kind of harsh without having it taken down. Sheesh.
I'm from Quebec and tasted Bobba, it tasted like juice...that's it. never again...
This confused me because I literally go buy a bucket of popping boba (first saw it on Amazon) at my local Asian store and put it in literally any drink. It's like $5 a for a bucket.
Damn. I have to admit I was also hating on Simu because of the out of context clip. After of seeing the company’s full pitch and introduction, Simu was definitely not in the wrong for his response and opinion.
@@Saroku007 chinese fish and chip shops in the uk should be forced to close , and pay reperations
@@TheZumph lol way to miss the point entirely. No one is upset about white people serving boba. That wasn't even close to why people are calling this cultural appropriation. Troll.
I did the same thing I was like “oh great what did Simu do?” and then I heard a recap video and had to actually watch the whole clip 😅
@@TheZumphIts kinda like making a superman movie with a Black person as superman. Did that kinda get your panties in a twist? Just a little maybe? Ah you get it.
@@TheZumph
First of all, "fish and chip" were not copyright. It has a long history, hence no need to give credit since everyone already know it's not an Asian invention.
The mom and pop shops did not claim as making it healthier than the original, did not criticize the ingredient of the authentic original as unknown.
No Asian entrepreneur mass produce fish and chip and piggyback the success by renaming it "fitch and cheap"
Actually in asia we dont call it boba. Bubble tea is still it
You right! Boba means "busty women" bubble is technically correct but I believe in the west coast we call it Boba but in the east they call it bubble.
People kept talking over Simu because... they see Asian man trying to bring up concerns about culture... it is always dismissed that people don't even think about it anymore, it's a reflex to shut down the asian man.
A canadian chinese talking about a taiwanese drink made with produce from the americas while wearing a European suit using the whitemans internet
You mean the guy that hops online and makes the same tired rants all the time. The same man who went after Mark Wahlberg for what he did to the Vietnamese guy as a teen, which apparently was overblown, only to then be casted alongside Mark and taking down his post and putting up some crao about how exited he was to be working with him... he gets on these social causes bc it gets him work in Hollywood. That's how he got Marvel's attention in the 1st place. He tweeted them about diversity and inclusion and inserted the idea of an Asian hero, it's always been self-serving
@@TheZumph You missed the point of the original video. The problem wasn't the product, or even its inventors, it was the marketing.
Saying that Bobba solves the problem of bubble tea being an "ethnical drink" that "no one knows what's in it," while also trying to sell it as a "trendy cultural drink" (their words, not mine) is literally cultural appropriation for capital gain.
Also, they are literally asking Simu to donate a million dollars to become their investor. He has the right to tell them his opinion.

In asia its called BUBBLE TEA or MILK TEA only americans called it boba
It’s boba is Australia too
I've heard it called Boba but usually we call it bubble tea. Or at least that's what I hear the most where I'm from
Boba tea is named after Hong Kong softporn actress Amy Yip as she was known as the 波霸 ("bo ba"). And yes, it's very much used in Asia
@@harvardfootball I'm talking about the cultural appropriation charge.

Yo, a good comparison is Japanese whisky. Scottish distiller people went there and taught the distillers of different companies, or vice versa, and then Japan started doing some banger fucking whisky! They didn't call it Japanese scotch, because of tax laws so they "couldn't" call it scotch. But they respected the culture, and the traditions about it and everyone is happy about it!

Here in the San Jose area Indian pizza is relatively new and trendy
uhhhhh.......they didn't though. they're actually partnered with a tawaniese company to make these drinks.
i've never been a big fan of popping noba bc it tends to make my throat hurt (that happens to me with things that have a super strong fake flavor usually...like I cant eat that gum that comes in cubes and taste like lemonade, throat hurts everytime) but popping bob a is definitely not fucking new...
I've known of Boba drinks since college. That was 15 years ago..
Nice to see Semen Lube on jknews
I mean how is that any different than American movies being changed to be able to be marketed in china. Plus it’s not about asking “is there even a need for this product in the market”. A real entrepreneur asks what do I have an abundance of that I can create a need in the market place for.
Just here to up for the algo - We gonna drink boba tea in any shape or form LESGO WE OUT HERE
Rare Simu W. Very rare
How come nobody's talking about how the can said sparkling alcoholic beverage? Are there other alcoholic boba brands? 🤔
Im confused by Ryan’s take because Simu’s focus was not really that this concept is not original and the product is not quality, but that they didnt acknowledge the Asian origins of boba on their label and work with Asian people and dumb stuff like that
If the difference between cultural appropriation and not cultural appropriation is just whether the product is good then i guess thats fine, it seems like a dumb way to differentiate it
I agree Simu is annoying and him trying to speak for all asian is stupid but he is right on that one.
Hes not annoying. He also wasn't speaking for all Asian ppl. re listen. He was speaking about how it would be perceived if they were to sell

Part of the problem is saying your version is better/healthier etc and badmouthing the original in some way
No one is saying their pizza is better nor their burger - might be the ‘best’ within an area but not just ‘better’ than
Other non-Italian did not marketed as "PISSA", better than the original and ditch Pizza name, claiming as no longer Italian and mass market as healthier than the original since we don't know what the Italian pizza maker put into their pizza.

We don’t claim Frenchies let them get clowned
If simu wasn’t so insufferable ppl wouldn’t have jumped em
Also this isn’t how I feel about him but wat others usually echo - I don’t know him like that
anyone remember the jknews video of kim k and her "invention" of her clothing line Kimono this shark tank episode they're talking about is basically the same as that.

Its stupid.
So what?
You clearly don't understand the history of Boba. It was originally Taiwanese, but it's popularity spread to most asian diasporas around the world. So now it's part of asian diaspora culture in general, not just Taiwanese.
A simple read on the wiki page about Bubble Tea would explain this to you, but unfortunately, you're just here to be a clown
@@user-783hhss7w2oifhe and? Whats your point? The cultural appropriation take is still ridiculous.
"Boba" translates to a stupid woman in Filipino. 🤣
