I addmitedly have 14 pies of various breeds (mostly first gen, some orange and banana) which are currently "spare" but yeh, pi4 is currently unobtanium!
A note for those who want to try it out - it DOES NOT block video ads in RUclips. Pi-hole is a DNS based adblocker which means it only knows which domain your device is contacting with, but not every piece of data transfered. RUclips's video ads and actual videos are sent from the same domains to the app, so Pi-hole will not have idea if you're watching ads or actual videos.
Good luck finding a raspberry pi these days. Yes pihole is a great tool to have, if does take care of most of annoying ads, but doesn't work against RUclips ads, requires a bit of learning curve, a good collection of ad lists and from time to time adding sites to white list. A worthy tool to have.
What do you mean by they are like Wiis? I mean Raspberrys are very cheap some under 15 dollars. Sometimes even cheaper. Just not at the moment because of the shortage since the covid pandemic
Great video! It doesn't send all the internet traffic through the raspberry pi tho, that would be insecure and a massive bottleneck. Instead the raspberry pi only recieves the requests for what ip address is associated with a domain (this is called DNS)
Wow... Second comment and I already find what I was looking for. So pi-hole is only a DNS server with a filter for known add servers? I would then have to tell my router to use the Pi as a DNS?
@@oscargr_ yes but the pihole is worse in blocking ads, just it has the advantage of being usable as a network wide blocker. I would advise to continue to use ad blocker add-ons if possible.
@@tartas1995 I remember my old router had some kind of DNS lookup table that could do something like this. If I remember it didn't work so well. I read somewhere in the comments that pi-hole wouldn't affect RUclips adds that really waste time. I m not too bothered with most ads on most websites. Pi Hole can only block requests to certain domains. It's not a replacement for an ad blocker in the browser nor does it block most of the ads (e.g. it does not block RUclips ads)
If I had a raspberry pi, then I think I would use this the most both on youtube and on every site that forces you to turn off your regular adblocker before covering 95% of the screen with ads.
Pihole is not an adblocker, its a DNS filter. It will not stop ads sent from the same domain over HTTPS/TLS. You need endpoint security with your own root certs or a normal adblocking plugin for that.
1) Not free, need to buy the Raspberry Pi itself. 2) DNS filtering (the ad-blocking method in this video) does not work on RUclips because ads are delivered directly from YT media servers these days. Meaning the same servers that deliver your video also deliver the ad, can’t block one without the other. 3) For people saying that you’ll still have issues with sites saying “disable your blocker”, sites have a much harder time detecting DNS filtering versus Adblock extensions, It’s not the same thing.
There’s a similar device called firewalla, yes that’s not a typo. Firewalla, it’s purple and it’s fairly small. It blocks every single ad you can think of. It cost about 300$😊
Running it through a pi zero might even slow down your speeds, unless your internet is like 5-10 mb/sec A pi zero was around 15 bucks (not free) but due to the shortages... They will often go for more. If you really want to deploy pihole, then using a seperate network would be ideal, along with an ssd modded pi4.
Ok this is enough! I have tested this on hyper-V running Ubuntu server with very minimal setup without any bloatware. 512 MB ram is pretty much inefficient for day to day operation for this setup to work, you will definitely see latency issues. 1Gb Ram is minimum requirement to get atleast decent performance with one device talking to it. If multi device is your setup expect to give it more ram and processing power which the raspberry Pi is not capable of handling and you will see network throttle. Plus it doesn't block RUclips ads and you will find yourself troubleshooting the blocklist from time to time if you are using multiple list to block millions of ads. Browser extensions works best and RUclips Premium is cheap enough.
Network speeds do not get throttled as the pi only receives DNS requests, not the entire load. In my personal setup (running on a first generation raspberry pi) it only adds 6ms of latency to a domain lookup. Your device also caches domain lookups so it doesn't even query the pi all the time
Lol where did you get 1GB minimum from? Official documentations says 512MB is fine. I have LXC containers running pi-hole with 512MB of RAM and not even half of it is being used.
It doesn’t do that by default also not every ad and it doesn’t necessarily speed up your internet. Also adguard is better at doing this so to the level it is on, but all in all pihole is a great way to start with! You don’t even need a raspberry pi for it :)

The mobile application doesn’t work if you block google add services in your dns server. Also you can just use the free AdGuard DNS server, you dont need a pi then .
Just to save you some time: it does not block all ads. In fact, nowadays it does not block majority of ads (especially in Google services - Google ads and youtube) since Google changed strategy and they serve ads from same server as content - so if you even block ads, you will block the content itself as well. I think other services gradually follow same principal.
Ublock Origin is still better, but this is useful for devices where ublock can't be installed (sidenote, you don't need a pi for this, any computer that you can run for when you need that adblocker will do it just as well at perhaps more power usage, but you can make it do other stuff too!)
