You are awesome! I suffer from extensive hip pain that simply came out of nowhere. It is going on 3 years now. I have been to Physical therapy and an Orthopedic doctor who after giving me "the shot", suggested that I might need hip surgery. That's a no for me. So I simply stretch and try to strengthen my muscles. I am so happy that I found your channel. It has been so helpful.

If you need hip surgery they you need it, it should be obvious if you have arthritis in hip, if it's bad then have the hip done.

@@mademoisellecm1the problem with that is if you need surgery and avoid it, you can increase your risk of arthritis. That will put you in much worse pain and you will 100% need a hip replacement which is a much more difficult surgery. You should listen to the advice of medical professionals, maybe see another orthopedist for a second opinion if it makes you feel better.

Theres a reason why you are still in pain 3 years later having attempted stretching and strengthening. No amount of stretching or strengthening will remove that abnormal bone growth (FAI) catching on your labrum. 3 years no relief.. you're a candidate for surgery.

Love the exercises! They hurt and they’re a massive challenge but are making me stronger. My hip pain is not relieved, but, I AM stronger and more stable. Interesting-my hip surgeon actually said that because the injection in my hip did not provide any relief that it was an indication that my pain was indeed due to the bone spurs, resulting from degenerative joint disease, as opposed to soft tissue driven pain, which would have been more likely to be alleviated by the injection.

Haven’t fallen from collapsed hips both were diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis). All from being on 60mgs of prednisone for over two years. It’s been 10 years since my diagnosis. I did hip injections over a year ago and NO RELIEF. I’ve been strengthening and have made sooo much progress and walk up two flights of stairs daily, do my exercises and have no signs of a limp ( like I did when I was initially diagnosed). None of what my body had gone through - in my opinion was EVER taken into consideration. I had a mild stroke at 35 that may have been a cause of the nephrotic issue that no one could tell me how it occurred. I just got sick one day and all this happened ( I still don’t know how because the doctors don’t know either). So medications that were prescribed were treating symptoms! I did physical therapy and they were only listening to my doctors diagnosis.
I left physical therapy and began listening to MY body because I was told I needed both hips replaced! I work, a full-time job and have been in my profession for over 18 years, move and no longer think that resting for ailments such as mine are needed! I move, and make sure every muscle know I need them!
    Thanks Matt!!!

I have a question; Once I had pain in my knee for a 2 years, which later was solved by massage and stretching of the muscles around the knee so the knee cap wouldn’t slide into the sides causing pain like a knife stabbing. I wonder if the hip can work in a similar way? I have lately have really bad pain in the hip and it seems to be a conencubetween my psoas and medius and/or puriformis. Can the muscles around the joint pull it into the wrong position (not only the tight capsule or how it was described) causing the same effect as KAM/pincer?

Hi Matt - I love that you prompt people to examine the evidence supporting surgical solutions for general problems like hip pain of unknown origin. However my hip pain is from damage caused by fall of my bike more than 10 years ago - crushing injury to glut med-min causing small tears and resulting long standing hamstring tendinosis and pain that restricts movement and cause pain with strengthening exercises. Have done endless physio and strengthening (including your DIY programs) but never improves. Would love to know if you think steroid injection could help this problem?

Interesting but i have a question please and also some counterintuitive points. I've been diagnosed with FAI cam impingement and on the MRI shows that the Cam has clearly damaged/frayed my labrum. I have sharp stabbing pain in my groin. The past 5 months I've tried strengthening exercise for hip flexors/glutes and core, i also have full ROM.. i am very strong in these areas.. but i still have stabbing pain. They offered me the injection test then surgery if it was positive. So QUESTION TIME.. You are saying surgery will unlikely help. But if abnormal bone growth is visibly catching on my labrum causing inflammation surely this would be the most likely culprit for pain. Especially since i am strong in the hips with full range of motion. If there is a mechanical issue causing damage to cartilage due to abnormal growth then by removing this growth through surgery you are eliminating the problem are you not? If someone did have lack of ROM with FAI this could also be to the Psoas/hip flexors going into spasm to protect the labrum from further damage. Once the growth is removed and the cartilage smoothened ROM would be restored due to the flexors coming out of spasm. So please don't give such a false hope with surgery because a lot of people actually need surgery to fix growth abnormalities. No amount of physical therapy would fix this if the growth damaging the labrum was the source of pain. Long term the mechanical issue would remain no matter how strong you have become in the hips besides PT would also further impinge the labrum with certain movements whilst your trying to restore ROM.

Can you build strength/muscle and gain flexibility at the same time when you are over 50. I am finding it difficult and I think rate of injury is higher. You can build muscle/strength but if you aren't lifting very heavy for 5 reps or less and giving your tendons a few weeks to recover, I think your tendon strength/size will lag behind

I've google the crap out of this is it my hip is it this that tried to stretch strengthen some days worse that others and no I don't have a bursitis , I just think it is appalling that I've seen 3 different types of people and they can't diagnose my issues it causes me issues daily and I can't cycle much used nor walk I get super stiff with it also , my leg length is same. At 2:40 you are committing the basic logical fallacy of denying the antecedent. If the injection produces a positive response in reducing pain, then it is clear that the pain originates from the joint and the joint therefore may need repair. There is no claim that if the injection does not relieve pain, then the pain is not coming from the joint. That is the inverse statement and is not at all logically equivalent to the original statement. If the injection produces no response then the test is simply inconclusive. You are grasping at straws as usual.

Picking and choosing papers which confirm this guy's bias against surgery. This youtube channel just makes people more confused than needed. So, take me, after 2.5 years of different physios I had no improvement. I guess this guy will say that I had bad physiotherapists. I bought the FAI fix and laughed when I saw the exercises. Most of them were already prescribed by my physios in the past.
I just ask one question. What is more likely: the entire field of orthopedic surgery is stupid and wrong and this guy (who does not publish in the scientific literature) is correct? Or maybe, this guy is biased against surgery, makes a good dollar on his FAI fix website and the world community of orthopedic surgeons actually help people?
