- I am making the picture frame out of One and half inch Oak. I had already ripped the Oak board I bought down to the right dimensions, so now I can get into how I build a picture frame.
Check out my photo/ video channel / channel
The steps I go through to make the picture frame are...
Rough cutting the Oak to length
Setting up the sliding compound mitre saw accurately to cut 45%
Test cutting the mitres and checking the cut is accurate
Cutting the frame piece to length exactly
Using the shop made picture frame glue up jig to glue up
Cutting the and fitting splines using another shop made jig
Routing the rebate for the picture, acrylic and backboard to sit in
Sanding off using the random orbital sander
Fitting the clips on the back to hold everything in

Quality video, very informative with nice walkthrough! Loving the multiple camera angles too, keep up the good work!
3 year old video and still get one of the better picture frame videos! 👍
Excellent video and process. Thank you for sharing. I really like the spline jig. Thank you for sharing. Your work shop is perfect for me. Thank you for the inspiration. I have to get busy...Keep up the good work.
Hi mate, love the clamping jig, really good idea.
Matt, thank you, it's a bit of fiddle to make but really useful once you have it.
nice shop
Thank you!
Nice job making the frame and the video. If I might add this suggestion, keep a tube of super glue in the near, dip screw driver tip into it or screw head, this will keep the screw on the screw driver.
Thanks Lee, will keep that in mind. No videos at the moment as my workshop flooded just after Christmas... Things still drying out now!
You need one of those lovely sharp fine Japanese saws to trim the ply off the corners
I used to have one, they are lovely to use and give a great clean finish.
like it
Thank you!
my spliter can be removed or lowered on my cheap table saw
Yeah some can, but the one I had ( it's now in the bin ) was so difficult to get to that I had to take it off in the end.... hence it is now in the bin and I am saving for a new one. Which saw do you have Howard?
I'm confused, why take a nice wood like oak for the frame but spline it with plywood? If you're going to go to so much effort, why not use some of that nice sapele or walnut...
I think plywood was what I had to hand, the frame was a present and I was running out of time. You are right though, it would have looked better. Thanks for watching anyway!
17:46 and 17:50 minutes into the video show rounded inside corners produced by the router. At 18:04 into the video we see clean inside corners with no explanation of how this changed.
All I used was a sharp chisel, but I forgot to film it, will do next time.
Failed to show how the round corners were squared up?
Richard, all I used was a sharp chisel, i just forgot to film it, will do next time.
