  • Today’s video is a plant shopping trip to Sunk Island Garden Centre to the east of Hull with Mark Goodlad of 'Crazy Tiki Garden' fame and we share some of the amazing range of exotic, tropical style and jungle plants they have for sale! Let's be honest, this was very much just an excuse to see some cool plants and for Mark fill my van with rare plant purchases but we do try to weave in some UK tropical style garden tips and 'sensible' plant ideas on the way. Sure, they have some incredible tree fern trunks, palms, Tetrapanax and bananas but if you already grow those and want more botanical wow factor in your garden then you might just want to see some of the Kalopanax, Abutilons, Hedychium ginger plants and bromeliads too! Now the peak bedding season is coming to an end, the polytunnels are filling up with both hardy and tender exotics and we also check out their behind the scenes propagation & rare plant areas too. Amazing plants, a mega friendly team and a top cafe too - the perfect plant road trip for us northern folk in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and beyond. We'll certainly be heading back to Sunk Island to see what else Dave and Shaun are propagating and selling very soon and you should visit too!

    George, I saw you on Gardener's World with Monty Don a few nights ago here in Jackson, Tennessee, USA, Zone 7b but I do my own version as I can grow of a tropical garden. More a few years ago than now due to my cancer surgery in 2023 left my right leg crippled and in a full leg brace and on a walker permanently. But STILL trying to find a way to garden and make my life move on. Love your channel!

I have a few different types of Abutilon of which I love in my garden, but I will have to try and get hold of one of the ‘Thompsonii’ - that is a beautiful plant! Hi George, Sunk Island looks fantastic, just wish it was closer to where I live.
    On a completely different topic, I have a Gunnera which I bought from Trebah a little over a year ago in a 1ltr pot. It's now grown ( in a pot) to shoulder height. One of the leaves is blocking the pathway, is it OK to remove it? Also with the current restrictions on Gunnera, do you recommend cutting the seed heads off ?
    Sorry for going off topic, but your advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Victor, thanks and apologies for my delayed reply. Yes, Sunk Island was well worth a visit and one to keep in mind if you're ever up this way! As for your Gunnera, removing the odd leaf shouldn't affect it too much, assuming it's not an option to prop or tie it out of the way. If somebody had a plant suspected to be a Gunnera tinctoria growing next to a stream then yes, it would certainly be a responsible precaution to remove the seed heads. In all honesty, in most garden settings I personally don't see that it's necessary for plants likely to be manicata or the x cryptica hybrid. I hope it continues to grow well for you.
