    Thanks to Dr. Vidyadhar Oke for a precise explanation. It needs elaborated description of all shrutis in the octaves we generally use while singing with the help of 22-shruti harmonium. The tonal variations of all komal swaras, used in different raagas, need also be discussed upon. I know, this would rather be an impossible task to pack up everything in a pre-emphasized reeds' box (harmonium) but one may kindly think of the shrutis being perceived and sung by the exponents in Hindustani and Carnataki styles by making use of the varied types of drones. Please post more videos for making it clear to music lovers. In essence, the western harmonium is to be bade farewell at the earliest if we wish for protecting our deepest sense of fundamental music; our own discovery.

    Dear honourable Dr Oke,
    as a beginner in search of a special Harmonium I came to hear the sound of the 22 Shruti harmonium. I was out of my skin because it's the first time a harmonium Sounds virtuous like the sitar or the Shanghai. The magic of Indian music is more than noticable.
    While researching, i found the following statement in the internet, about the 22 Shruti Harmonium:
    "There is only one major drawback of 22 shruti harmonium in comparison to equi-tempered harmonium. It has only one note as tonic note, i.e. only one Sa is fixed and other notes are set on it accordingly.
    eg. Dr. Oak always demonstrates his 22 shruti harmonium tuned in scale A or Saphed 6 (6th white). The tonic note ‘Sa’ is on the key A and it cannot be changed. Whereas, on equi-tempered harmonium, you can place ‘Sa’ on any key and every next note is tuned in the similar proportion.
    Hence, if you don’t need to change scales then you can buy 22 shruti harmonium."
    My unknowledgeable understanding is:
    If the player can fine-tune every microton (Shruti) as he wishes, he can also choose the tonic note and then the microtones according to the raga, relativ to the choosen tonic.
    Or is that gentleman right and the 22 Shruti harmonium is limited to a pre tunes scale because the tonic can't be changed?
    I beg of you for clarifican.
    Thank you Sir

  • @teslapower220
    @teslapower220 5 лет назад +7

    So the point here is that ratios of frequencies of any two different notes in a scale is a rational number and not irrational. Hence when two or more notes are played together, the sounds are commensurate with a well defined combined period that is the least common multiple of the individual periods of the notes. Since the combined multi-note signal repeats identically over this period, there is no pattern that is incommensurate with this period that the human brain perceives as something annoying.

    • @dr.birenhazra2278
      @dr.birenhazra2278 5 лет назад

      Yes. The point is exactly what you have highlighted. Would you kindly explain how the brain perceives and differentiates the rational and irrational multi-tones (all major and minor chords); does some sort of adaptation play behind the musical sense???

    So 440 is wrong frequency? This explains why the human frequency is in conflict. It’s not just the ears it’s the whole body that is not in sync with the planet. Having said that the Middle East has completely different tuning which when I listen to makes me feel out of this planet and sends me to heaven. I think the question is of harmony. What would be good base to tune to? Also how does technology interfere within the body. Very fascinating. Thank you for this great info Mr. Oke.
    Side note, I wish you would start a RUclips channel for harmonium tutorials. You would easily become a sensation provided it’s a complete course. I also believe it’s a mistake not to as this seems to be your passion.
    Again thank you, for your contribution to humanity.

      Even earlier Western tuning was natural as per Indian. But later when harmonium arose they changed the natural tuning to equitempered tuning. They fit all 12 notes in a particular range. So all notes got moved a bit from their natural frequencies. And since then we are accustomed to this pattern. Frankly speaking 99.9% people wont make out the difference but yes those 0.1% for sure.

    • @SaveManWoman

      @@pusalkarpriyuI suppose it comes down to what is development of what its intent is from beginning to be able to tell the difference instead of continuing with narratives rather than actual conversation with music in dialogue. Some push some are ok with whatever. Of course service is always what get out of it. Love the dialogue on this channel. Let’s harmonize more frequencies with one another. 💕

    this harmo has 22 notes but same 12 keys like its European counterpart and that means you have to pull out/pull in levers again and again to play 22 notes. This makes it for professionals and not for beginners like me. It shall be amazing to see someone playing traditional music using this 22 notes harmonium. I am searching for such videos but have not found any.

      While playing particular raga we dont use more than 1 shruti for that particular note. For example in Bhoop raga or Durga raga the Re will be the same as defined under that raga. That particular shruti is only to be played throughout that raga so there there is no question of pulling knobs every time while playing single raga. For Bhoop Re knob will be different from Re in Durga but will be maintained the same throughout that raga.

    While I was learning music I came across this video of Mr Vidyadhar Oke who has a patent on a 22 note harmonium. He goes great lengths to stress how the 8 note equi tempered scale is dissonance and so imperfect to the ear.
    That is true. The natural scale sounds more harmonious to the ear. Lot of bhakts and proponents of Indian culture will jump here and say we told you so. Indian culture is always better and more advanced than western culture.
    But wait a minute. There is one aspect Mr Oke doesn't reveal here. Perfect as it might be, the instrument has to be tuned to 1 particular scale, C E B etc. If you order a 22 shruti harmonium and on it try to play in F scale or G scale it will be a total mess. This is the advantage of equi tempered instruments. Since the frequency jump between 2 notes is constant, I can play on the same instrument in any scale.
    So equi tempered scale or tuning was a compromise arrived at to enable more variety in music even though it might not be 100% perfect to the ear. And probably this is the reason western music has so many styles while Indian classical music has stagnated in a few common themes.
