How a prison-turned-pot-farm is helping those behind bars for cannabis crimes | Green Room

- As California enters its sixth year of legal recreational cannabis, it's easy to forget the fact there are still a lot of people serving a lot of prison time for weed-related crimes - especially for those of us who focus on the the features (i.e. "fun") side; adventures in stoned yoga, the origins of a beloved pot pipe and the Marine founded marijuana brand that's helping veterans battle opiate addiction.
It was after I posted the last of those "Green Room" videos to social media several months back someone swiftly responded: "I wish for everyone of these 'weed is good' stories, we learned about the nonviolent offender who is going to die in prison for being caught with an [eighth of an ounce]8th." It was a good point, and one that really resonated with me. That's why I was excited to find out about the former prison in Coalinga, Calif., that Ocean Grown Extracts has turned into a pot farm where cannabis is grown, processed and packaged in what look like police evidence bags. In addition to a portion of sales going to Last Prisoner Project, a nonprofit dedicated to cannabis criminal justice reform, the fact that the Evidence brand exists at all helps raise awareness that there plenty of people are currently behind bars for nonviolent cannabis crimes.
Evidence brand's co-founder Casey Dalton explained the idea to us this way: "We grow weed at a prison to get people out of prison for growing weed." And, as we found out during our tour, repurposing a prison for such a purpose has other upsides too. For example? "It's got really good security," Dalton said.
Now who's ready to go to prison - for a tour?

All of us over at "Green Room"central were stoked to work on this episode. While we went to Coalinga knowing that there as symbolic importance to Ocean Grown Extracts' decision to use a former prison for pot production, what we werent prepared for was how well-suited such spaces are for all the various aspects of cannabis cultivation and manufacturing.
Free them guys.
It's crazy to have locked people up just to do the same thing that got the people arrested anyway, and most likely they were probably only selling it and not growing it
If growing it is not illegal then why should selling it be illegal in the first place.
@@maxpro751 to be honest,we know why, welcome to Amerikkka
Omit the crime, do the time
@@teopalafox Herbs are for the healing of the nation according to the Bible,it shouldn't be a crime
@stay focus Number one, the bible is bullsh1t. Any "holy" book is. If you'd like to prove me wrong, we can discuss it. Next, cannabis is Not legal on the federal level. To continue, these are inmates. Not people that got a speeding ticket. Unsavory characters that went before a judge and were sentenced because of their Crimes. In closing, how appropriate or wise is it to teach criminals how to cultivate drugs? These inmates need to work manual labor to repay their debt to society, not sneaking doobies to their cells, or THC to decarb and eat.
The State should be charged with Drug Trafficking. Should put check points at each Hwy with dogs.
Prisons should never be a for profit business
Nope. These thugs aren't there to party. They partied in the ghetto. Hence, they are incarcerated now! Manual labor will help them, 18 hours a day digging a hole just to fill it back in or moving rocks from one side of a field, then moving them back, or using plastic scissors to cut each blade of grass 1/4 inch lower each day. Allow them the privilege of repayment to society that they are in debt to!
Go vote
Agreed. But a prisoner tended farm or vegetable garden needn't make a profit to be useful. It just needs to do the prisoners' minds good so that they become less likely to land in prison again.
Good job! We the pot people don't deserve to be in prison with the animals
U mean ur mammy
@@antoniohoward981 I can tell you probably one of those animals since you can't even write a sentence!
Agree, and it is so incredible that in LATAM peopla want to send a consumer/addict to prison with true criminals.
First of all nobody should be behind bars for marijuana. Wtf

The USA has half of the world prison population. Imagine the whole populations of Alaska, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota all in prison. That’s the prison population in the USA. Unbelievable
@Autodrome96 Incarceration rates in the U.S. far exceed any developed nation.
Black people commit crime at a very high rate.
@@autodrome9618 That's not how statistics work. A person would need to prove its false and missing information can't do that.
According to the numbers USA does have the largest incarceration rate/population globally.
@@autodrome9618 OkaY youRe RiGhT. ITs FalsE... 🥴
@Autodrome96 love how they tell you that’s not how statistics work because you have to prove it false first and then don’t give any facts whatsoever themselves to prove you wrong. Then they say you’re wrong simply because America does have the largest population in prison- and yet that doesn’t prove whatsoever that it’s equal to half the world population. Don’t waste your time on people like this. 😂
If we emptied our prisons, used them for growing of cannabis, employed former persons convicted of cannabis offences,
made this beneficial plant available to
everyone at a low cost, maybe we could actually heal our hurting country. What a dream, huh?

I don’t see the point in buying a regular 8th anymore. If I can get those infused prison shortys for $30, what’s the point of buying a weaker product, like an alien labz 8th, for $50+. In my opinion a highly slept on company in the Za Za industry.
Starting up regular crop farms for them and other prisons in order to be more self sustaining would be cool too! I bet it would help people in there with anxiety and depression, while giving them tangible skills to start gardens and farms for when they get released.

That's very cool. Yeah 40,000 people still in prison for pot crimes. That's a crime in itself
It's also almost a crime to refer to cannabis as pot, which is a disrespectful moniker.
I have a really hard fact all you weedheads can’t understand. You don’t do to prison for deal weed moron. They don’t give a shit about the damage drugs do it’s more revenue. You go to prison FOR NOT PAYING TAXES on your dope profits which is what they really are bent about.
Another weed genius
“Medicine” my ass
Crimes that they knew were illegal when they committed them. The conscious commission of a capitol crime should be pursued. Blame the people that voted these laws into place for being able to be brainwashed by 1 single man's marketing campaign.
@@terryduffield5860 Thousands of scientific studies prove otherwise.
What a mess California is.
probably the only decent prison weed that exists

Right on. About time....
Are you guys hiring?
Such little good news these days.... this was a great idea!!

What an amazing transformation. Jail Guitar Doors should do a benefit show here to combine two good causes.

Drug dealing is largely about tax evasion. They are in prison for dealing on a mass scale and evading taxes, not for smoking weed.
Not really… they still pay taxes for the stuff they buy hence generating money for the economy…. What drug dealer tho hasn’t carried a gun/ had to protect his “turf”. Just cuz he was dealing weed doesn’t mean he probably didn’t kill ppl. Weed is money and ppl will kill for money
You should smoke a joint.

Seems people have some Tegridy after all
If that’s not a slap in the face of everybody incarcerated for cannabis I don’t know what is

More of this.
What an irony! Waking up, at last!
Hypocrisy at its finest
That is good for the city.
Dirty money keeps begetting dirty money no matter how many genetic modifications there are to cannabis.
Arrest the pot smokers/ growers so they can grow for us for free while their incarcerated. Sounds like slavery to me.
This seems like it should be illegal for some reason. You threw them in prison for it now you want them to work in the industry, that makes no sense.

Unfortunately, the pot in stores is lousy. I smoke to get high. So, I buy black market. If you raise the THC level in your pot, I might, might, try it...

Amazing! Very cool
Almost every person affected by drug addiction will tell you it started with smoking weed. It’s so sad to see a society that glorifies everything wrong. Being high is being high. Any psychologist worth their weight will tell you that studies show that cannabis causes psychotic issues in many people. Depression, anxiety, and even triggers schizophrenia.
Do you believe alcohol is okay to be legal?
@Ljaydbay oh I know. No one can justify alcohol being legal and marijuana not.

I highly doubt they had lots of cannabis criminals locked up in that place…
Charges $70 for a half, but donates $1 per half sold. Evidence says they grow and sell 40,000 lbs a year. Each pound is worth $5000, which equates they make around $201M. At 72 halves per pound we're looking at a $72 donation on $5040 profit. 🙄 Gotta love capitalism.
(They give back $2.7M to run this business and that works?????)
What are you "Giving" to help those people??????. Exactly!. Also, You must not be a "Small Business Owner", Or you would know HOW EXPENSIVE it is to "Run A Business" !! Trust me I KNOW !! People are in "Business" to make MONEY, Secure their Future, The fact that they are "Giving Back" even $.10¢ is huge !!!. You shouldn't "Judge" others !
