Ron Finley: Food Forest

  • This film tells the story of a South Los Angeles edible garden planted in a surprising spot. Ron Finley, its planter, constructed the garden the way he wishes his neighborhood could be. And his vision of repurposing unused open space, like that of many others working together on urban agriculture in our city, should inspire us all, and remind us of how, with a little creativity of vision, and willingness to get our hands dirty, we can remake spaces defined by asphalt and dead grass into productive places of beauty.

You can grow chard, spinach, lettuce and tomatoes indoors, as well as several other veggies, in milk cartons, buckets, tins, old drums.... find what you need. Start feeding yourself. You'll be amazed at how quickly you learn, and how satisfying it is to grow your own food. Is there a vacant stand nearby? Even better- but you will need council permission, or your food garden might be destroyed by council.

I've always wanted to marry a Gardner. A humble, yet noble job. It's so amazing how life all starts from a seed, or something extremely small, and grows into something amazing. Thank you Ron, you showed me that these things are possible. Plants, and gardens are full of magic, and nature's lovely gifts. Sometimes we forget.....

What a wonderful thing your doing. Giving children and others the chance to see things as they grow....not wrapped in plastic from the grocers. Probably the first time some of these kids ever saw them growing for real! Wow!! What a testament for you! God bless and keep growing.

As a child, I thought that everybody grew food in the backyard. My great-grandparents, grandparents & parents did. I did, too, for as long as I could afford a home. Now, all that is gone. I see so many vacant lots & think: wouldn't it be great to grow something here. The tragedy is that so many private property owners would rather let the land go to waste than share a single grain of dirt with their neighbors. Thank God for the generous soul & good heart of this 1 man. We need to be like him.

This video brought me to tears. Its short but powerful. I'm originally from Detroit and when I go back to visit it is devastating to see. I visit my nieces, they're idea of lunch is a few bags of chips and a pop and thats the way it was for most of the kids around me growing up and when I was growing up, they at least had grocery stores, and now there are hardly any there. We did have a garden and we ate out of our garden and even now I garden. I'm starting to grow to share too. God Bless!!!

This is what humanity should be all about. If there was one of these on every block with communities involved I bet they would see a huge drop in crime and other social problems. Less people would be depressed and more would be happy. Thanks, Ron Finley, you are my hero. I watched Ron's TED talk (do a search if you haven't seen it - so worth it) and was so happy to find this. I already grow shit but now I'm going to get me some gangsters so we can all grow shit together.

This is what community food forests are about, providing for the needy, We should not hide our food behind fences, let people who are hungry help themselves and teach them they can grow their own food providing for their families with minimal effort.

this is my idea of wonderful. i pray that the entire globe becomes one huge food forest. we could easily achieve that by just redirecting the resources we currently put into destroying the world and killing, to irrigation, planting and care-taking the earth. My parents use to go to the gardens and pick food. It was do great. I remember having to peel beans lol. I loved it but now :( not too many have gardens. But my father still has one lol.

We're doing work in Hayes Valley a former black and now posh and gentrified neighborhood, moving to Western Addition which is essentially the last bastion of color in Central SF building food forests for the people by the people!
