    I don't want the route, I just want an instructional video on how to assemble Rob's pillow setup! It wouldn't be a good video without one of his cans of wine leaking. I think that route needs to be on my spring list - well the correct version! Great video as always!

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  Год назад +2

      Hah, we've been on trips where his pillow set up is even more elaborate!!! I posted this in a different reply, but here are some quick links for you:
      Ochoco Overland 2022 route: ridewithgps.com/routes/40796519
      The Big Lonely (not sure the year): ridewithgps.com/routes/37486952
      We ended up deviating from our track anyway and ended up on some sections of the Oregon Outback bikepacking.com/routes/oregon-outback/
      I didn't end up saving our tracks to the extent that I could show you the exact route we did. But if you throw all of these GPX files onto a map you will see how you can link them all up. Also we started in Sun River because Rob has a friend with a house out there. Hope this helps and hope we run into you on the trails this season Andy!

      Hey Andy, I have been trying different ways to obtain the perfect pillow system and I’m not there yet. I’m not sure it can be done. Kinda like me carrying a can of wine for one day on a bicycle without it leaking.
      I’m not sure it’s possible in my lifetime!

  • @karlr6810
    @karlr6810 Год назад

    It was cool you and Rob met a lot of bikepackers on this trip.
    What do you guys do for food? Stop and buy stuff in town? Carry freeze dried food? How did you keep the sub sandwiches from going bad? I'm always a bit concerned on long rides with finding food to eat...well, stuff I can eat (dietary restriction).
    Also, what do you guys pack for clothing? In the PNW, it seems like the weather can be fickle.
    Glad you both had a good trip and thanks for sharing! 👍

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  Год назад +2

      As always thanks for watching Karl!
      How we pack food really depends a lot on the trip. We will do some analysis before the ride to determine how many dinners/lunches we should bring based on resupply points. We usually skip any kind of proper breakfast and just eat a bar or snacks.
      I'd say typically on an overnighter we are carrying some kind of dehydrated meal. I have been making mine at home a lot recently (dehydrated beans, rice, some seasoning, then add Fritos and cheese). If I am lazy ill just get a mountainhouse meal. Sometimes however we will bring some cooked pasta, a sandwich, or a burrito, and eat that instead of a dehydrated meal. There is probably a bit of a weight penalty for that, but it generally tastes a lot better.
      We don't really worry much about keeping things from going bad. I'll eat a sandwich or burrito that is a few days old... Ill give it the ole smell test to make sure it seems fine...If I know we will be slogging in the heat, I may be a bit more selective about what kind of sandwich I take or opt for a burrito instead (where possible).
      Most of our trips are 2-4 days so we don't have to do big food carries, there is also usually a resupply every few days. I don't think we have ever done a trip where it required carrying more than three days of food.
      As for clothes, I am really quite minimalist. Typically I wear: Ankle socks, merino boxer briefs, shorts, a sun hoody. I'll bring with me a lightweight fleece, a windshell, and a puffy. This gets me through most of our trips. Occasionally ill supplement with some merino tights and a rainjacket depending on the weather or I may do softshell pants instead of shorts. That is it! No extra socks, underwear, shirts... unless it is a really big trip.
      If the weather is going to be too lousy we will just plan a trip somewhere else (or won't go). If we encounter weather that is REALLY bad mid trip, we'd probably hunker down.
      Sheesh, sorry for the novel!
      Hope this helps!

    You've been putting out a ton of great content recently. Do you still have a day job?! I love that you guys have fun, no matter what. And what was wrong with your calf that you had it wrapped the first few days?

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  Год назад +3

      Thanks Corrine!! Hah yeah Rob and I both still have full time stressful day jobs 😂. We are both lucky to be afforded a decent amount of time off from our jobs (at least by US standards) to take trips. I get ~5 weeks off, I have been at this same company for over 10 years! I know not everyone has that opportunity so every time Rob and I go on these trips, we are truly grateful to be in a position to be able to do it. Being able to recognize that helps us have fun, no matter what. Our hardest days riding out in Utah are still awesome, and after all, we signed up for it, no one is forcing us to be out there!
      I strained my right calf before the trip, I have VERY tight calf muscles. Weather + the injury postponed our trip by two days. I actually wasn't sure I'd be able to do the ride, I was limping around the morning we left. It turned out to have virtually no impact on the ride though, and by the end my calf felt way better! Woo! Hey Jim, here are the two routes that we approximately combined.
Hope this helps 😃

      Hey Jim, put all those routes Chris gave you in your little bike computer. Shake it vigorously, pick a spot to start near a bar because that’s where you want to end after a week of riding, go get lost and have a Great time! 😁
      PS bring a fishing pole!
      Cheers 🍻

      @@pnwbikepacking In a typical weather year, whatever that is, when do these routes get ridable without serious cold weather gear? Say, nights averaging in the upper 30s at the coldest.

      Dude I don't think i've actually had french toast since that all you can eat french toast Rob was talking about on the XWA. I am not living my best life 💔. I need to plan a trip where its a super hard ride and the prize at the end is all you can eat french toast with some proper maple syrup and coffee... what a dream.

      @PNW Bikepacking , Couldn't tell you the last time , I had French toast. Rob's comment made me laugh and recall a time me and a buddy cleaned out an aid station of cookies at a marathon. Runners behind us were not happy with us . Be well Sir . Dream Big !

      I signed up for a basic mountaineering course with a local group called the Mazamas. Rob was an assistant teaching the class, too bad the poor bastard barely knows how to tie a knot. 😃. As part of the class we would go on local training hikes. On my first hike meeting the group, Parker kicked my ass up the hills, then tried to humiliate me by asking if he could carry my pack, he was dedicated to training hard. From then on I knew we were going to get along! Since then we've done a lot of mountaineering, backpacking, rock climbing, and bikepacking together.
      When out climbing there would be some pretty intense situations where there is an extreme amount of trust you have to put in your climbing partners. For everyone in the group, you've got to know fitness level, mental strength and grit, ability to make good judgement calls, determination to meet the objective, and just general compatibility with the personalities... if these things are out of sync it can cause problems on trips. For Rob and I , we've always been in the same ballpark when it comes these things. We like to get things done, we like push ourselves physically and mentally, we want to be out of our comfort zone a little bit, but we also don't want to take it too seriously... we want to have fun. We also both have a way of appreciating the suck. All this ha made us compatible adventure friends for the last decade!!!
