Welcome back to our Greek Street Food series! In this video, we are trying to find the best street foods in Athens. We are trying 3 of the most famous street foods in Greece: Souvlaki, Greek pie or Spanakopita (made with phyllo and spinach), and the traditional Greek dessert Loukoumades. Spanakopita is normally made with dough in rural areas. In my island the women making it always use actual dough. In the city they are too lazy and make it with filo dough because its too easy.
3 things I wanna point out:
1. Spanakopita's filling and flavor usually depend on the origin of the maker. Greece may be a generally small country, but its regions are vast and the traditions quite endless. I am greek and sometimes i am amazed as to how different each part of greek cuisine can be. In my house, my mother always makes her spanakopita with loads of greek feta, in other parts of Greece they don't use feta at all.
2. Gyros is a big thing in Greece, and it is almost always a hit or miss, especially in Athens. The old timely, traditional gyros is made with just a few ingredients and sometimes no sauce, whereas the new version has always tzatziki sauce, french fries, with sometimes adding ketchup, mustard, mayo or even spice in the mix
3. Loukoumades is even harder to explain. Each house, if traditionally makes this sweet, has its own way of serving it. I, for example, love it with honey and walnuts, but i enjoy the occasional white chocolate on top. It has endless possibilities and i am sure some people started making the savory version of this. You just can't go wrong with loukoumades hahahaha.

If you try spanakopita from most towns or villages of mesogeia, it has some cinnamon in the mix, whether it's the regular version or the one without phyllo, called moussounta.
@@Nscizor I have never seen this version of spanakopita, it sounds pretty interesting to be honest.
@@elfhchan With cinnamon? You just sprinkle some ground cinnamon into the spinnach filling and it makes more of a krasomezes (wine appetizer I guess?).

Personally, when it comes to greek pie, I prefer the "strifti" pita because the fyllo is so much tastier in my opinion. You can literally add any filling and it'll taste amazing because the fyllo is just so good! I could literally eat strifti tyropita everyday

Tasos taverna in koskinou (rhodes) has the best lambchops i ever had, i bit into bone and everything they were so delicious, and that was the last coarse of out meal. Best tasting food i ever had hands down

The loukoumades filled with chocolate and pistacio cream on top is an amazing food. It is SO SWEET though, i only go for it if i haven't had a sweet for a while because after you eat them, you won't even be able to think about sweets for 2-3 days.

4:00 is not filo dough. It's a different type of dough made with yoghurt called "Kourou".
Those they eat are "sfoliata" kourou are just with feta cheese. stavros

Ariston has very good Spanakopita for sure. It was my go to place for this traditional pie. For a nice sit down meal for Souvlaki, try out Bairaktaris in Monastiraki. Pre-covid19 days, it was vibrant to sit along its sidewalk for dinner, with Bouzouki live music.
A nice sing song between each meal and an afternoon nap, now that's doin it greek style, haha. ARISTON FOR LUNCH and NEW LOUKOUMATHES for dessert, oohh yeahhh. Thankyou Luke & Sabrina

I love greek food.. No cause im greek but its amazing and lots of choices 🔝🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷❤️❤️😍
One, to dispel a misconception. It is VERY rare to "score" a traditional greek cheese pie that is made with actual Feta cheese, usually Mitzithra is used (a type of cottage cheese, saltier and more soft than your typical Feta - and way cheaper!). Most sure fire way to get Feta in your cheese pie is to find home made cheese pie (tiropita, in greek). Same goes for spanakopita with cheese, that's also most probably mitzithra and not feta.
Two, there is one special ingredient that makes all greek food taste better, and it is the same thing for ALL our food, be it salty or sweet, baked or cooked or grilled or whatever. We just LOVE life too much and want to enjoy it to 110% or more, this is why we make our food "to die for". Yes, many dishes are "borrowed", others are "parallel" to similar ones in the area and a select few, many of which were NOT presented like lentil soup, are original since the days of Homer. Each dish is "adapted" according to our life philosophy so each one may differ slightly from the way others make similar dishes. No biggie, happens everywhere.

Nice to be watching this while visiting Athens. Stuck here because of lockdowns and Can’t move around much but it’s great to know what I could watch out for.
Nice to discover different places and tastes, but spanakopita is made with feta, the 1st was more a greens pie, hortopita, the 2nd pita was a leek pie, Prasopita. Souvlaki does not contain parsley or tomato sauce. Loukoumades, aren't filled with syrup and especially not nutella. You didn't try anything traditional, no spanakopita, souvlaki pita, or loukoumades. I hope you had a good meze afterwards with an ouzo or tsipouro, ya mas

O KOSTAS souvlaki is also the classic one they serve the same from its beginning
KOSTAS souvlaki serves the modern type of souvlaki which is more huge

So again battle against tradition and classic style

There is SO much more to Greek cuisine. Go off base and out of the city. You have to hit one of the islands. You need to go to Cyprus and Naxos.

As a Greek who has been living in the UK for the last 3 years, I really enjoyed that video. It just made my mouth watery. Missed this Greek unique food so much as I didn’t visit Greece this summer.
Dear friend, living in England you will miss great greek food. But if you cook yourself you can find great fresh fishes meat, vegetables. It true that english good restaurants are expensive. I found some carvery meat restaurants in great quality oven baked meat. kind regards Stavros.

The souvlaki in the suburbs of athens is different that ones you get in the centre of the city but it gets even more different types in north Greece i prefer the athenian suburb type of souvlaki
It is also verry healthy just meat and fresh vegies in a pitta u can remove french fries also (we call them just fries here) in order to make ot even more healthier
I think is the healthier street food you can get
I suggest you the next time in greece to go outside the centre try new things and foods and see many sights and hills away from "tourist areas" i hope one day to see you guys in some islands also...
