These days I only play this game alone, because I'm so nostalgic to these tracks that I get blubbery and teary when even just casually listening to them. Brings me back to being 5 and playing my snes on a rainy weekend afternoon to this soundtrack
Soyo Oka was and is a brilliant composer, even back then, her unusual timing signatures made her stand out from the crowd. Plus the sound she uses has this way of invoking a whimsical, nostalgic feeling. It was her compositions that made many early SNES games, like Sim City, Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart, etc. simply magical and dreamlike. So many memories of playing this, and yes, the City level theme is my favorite. It's just beautiful to listen to, and it is timeless.
@@pj2yyy2 Agreed. This OST and Pilotwings OST are some of my most replayed soundtracks from the SNES era. All of these tracks are so amazing to just sit down and listen to.
I have the title screen music as a wake up call ringtone. And a fun little fact, all of the soundtracks have the same melody, the melody is clear in the village music.
I remember I could just put the controller down and just listened to the music back 30 years ago when I was a little kid. The musics of Gradius and EDF in SFC were amazing too.
You hit on everything good about this soundtrack. I was a HUGE SimCity fan all the way from SC SNES through SC4+RH, and every soundtrack is nostalgic to me. But there truly is something about the SNES SC that set it apart, and you broke down why beautifully. The the second movement in "Capital" and the bassline in "Metropolis" are among my favorite parts of the whole soundtrack. When I made a new city, my goal was to be able to hear those on loop. lol.
I had very little skill or desire to play the type of game play that Sim City offered, but I couldn't stop trying just for the music alone. That is some powerful stuff 😊
This just popped up in my recommended videos and I could not agree more. The Village Theme is my all time favorite. I almost used it in my wedding. But we decided to go with Fisherman's Horizon from FFVIII.
@@Mermi right? The soundtrack is what made the game so damn magical. It still stands the test of time. Wish Soyo Oka was still composing music like this, hell, I wish Sim City SNES got an HD remaster, I'm shocked it hasn't. Sure, the franchise has evolved, but honestly none of them have the same magic that this installment had and still has.
Im not good with music but this is extremely nostalgic to watch and know someone can interpret the moods of the music according to the size of the cities and feels 🥹🥹🥹 beautiful video!
Got into this game as a kid just after an amazing cross-country trip by rail with my brother and grandmother. I remember being hit by such an overwhelming wave of nostalgia and sadness that the trip was over when I booted up my SNES and the opening theme started playing. It never fails to recapture that moment and those feelings for me.
Got here via the RUclips algorithm, probably because I have hundreds of hours of playtime listening to the SimCity theme over and over again. I tried to convince all my friends that this is the best video game soundtrack, but usually the response is "yeah it's nice I guess" while I could go on for hours about how GOOD it is! By the way, did you ever hear the Japanese orchestra playing the Sim City soundtrack! It's REALLY powerful, and I wish I could hear more of it! If you cant find it, I can see if I can dig it up in my favs somewhere! I subbed and will check out the rest of your channel when I'm less busy again! :)
I so wish they would make a remaster of this game for the Switch. Maybe update some of the stuff you can build, but keep the classic gameplay and soundtrack in tact. Also, gonna add, the orchestrated versions of the village and town theme songs sound like they would fit right in with a Dragon Quest game. Like seriously, I can easily imagine them playing as you march your characters around a village or town in Alefgard or something. Just stunning all around. Shame the city theme wasn't orchestrated, I would've loved to hear that.
Thanks for this, Simon! Love the SimCity tracks that you played for us like Village. Hope to catch you again on your streams when my work schedule permits.
@@SimonLoveridge I would love to hear your take on the City theme. My favorite theme in the entire game. It's just so dreamlike, relaxing and an absolute joy to listen to.
Let’s take a minute to appreciate how incredible your mic quality is But yes this game had an incredible soundtrack and was such a superior game to the original PC version that it could have been labeled a straight up sequel And remember - this was EARLY SNES! This was one of the launch titles on the back of the box For anyone who wasn’t there at the time - the SNES improved on the NES like cars improved over horses
I'm sure you've heard it by now, but the version released using the uncompressed source samples is out and it's brilliant. This is one of my favorite soudntracks of all time and hearing it "from the source" is like a special treat. ruclips.net/p/PLD-vbw8Jmuyifr6-Y8N6AjhqFeA6m_PhA
One of your live commentors asked about an orchestrated version, and there was. Called the Orchestral Game Concert performed by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. In Orchestral Game Concert 2 they performed Villiage and Town from the SNES/Super Famicom version of Sim City. Definitely give it a check if you haven't already. I'm sure someone already did giving this was last year. Villiage: ruclips.net/video/M_-zCrN-MX8/видео.html Town: ruclips.net/video/KmLxKhyzyBM/видео.html

this was the soundtrack to my childhood.

I luv early SNES music.
Soyo Oka's work on Sim City and Pilotwings is absolutely incredible. I'd play these 2 games specifically just to listen to the music back in the day.
Agreed!
Indeed, she is an amazing and underappreciated composer. It was her compositions that made many early SNES games like this simply magical.
Soyo Oka is perhaps one of the most underappreciated musical geniuses of the VGM world.

The drums and bass in the second track tho!

It fit so perfectly with the creative joy of this game!

That budget screen music seems like he's missing being home with his family because he's working overtime at work.
The good night music was always my favourite. I'd leave the SNES running for ages just to listen to it

Let's face it. Not many of us heard the Megapolis theme when we were kids.
you need to review other simcity's soundtracks
