Everyone who has a speck of rationality left them in them, irrespective of whether you're left or right, Sheftel was right about this one. He did something very unpopular which was ultimately "right". Demjanjuk was tried and he won, because of the exact right reasons he should have won the trial: there wasn't sufficient evidence convict him.
Sheftel is an absolute hero! I admire and respect him so much. He based his judgement on facts and logic instead of getting played with emotions which the media and government was trying to do. The same tactics were used by the nazis in the 2nd world war :( and if more people would’ve responded like Sheftel to these tactics, these evil things that were done to the Jews may have never happened.
What escapes my understanding on Sheftel and his supporters is encapsulated perfectly when he was interviewed immediately following the Supreme Court’s ruling. How could he revel during such a distressing time for his country? Men and women surround the court in complete dismay. Survivors - who he called senile and liars - were devastated. Whether he was right or not, the pain for your surrounding countrymen should be respected. His actions following the case were indescribably insensitive and completely unjustified in my opinion.
I immediately “got” Sheftel’s spirit. Sometimes people have to look past appearances and listen to words and logic.

I don't envy him whatsoever for defending Demanjuk come Judgement Day. He will share fate of Ivan, no doubt.
