SFWA was formed to protect professional writers from predators like the late Hugo Gernsback, who often underpaid or didn't pay his writers at all. 1. SFWA members are mostly not professional writers but hobbyists who sell very few copies and don't depend on writing to make a living; 2. SFWA is predicated on the importance of traditional publishing. The traditional publishing market was broken a long time ago, when publishers decided to give a few authors all of their promotion and distribution budget. Independent self-publishing is where it's at for genre fiction. 3. SFWA is supposed to be a nonpartisan organization that promotes professional writers, but that original mission has been sidelined in favor of promoting a political and social agenda.
*that original mission has been sidelined in favor of promoting a political and social agenda* = fact. What's weird is political and social agendas are damned strange. You think 30 years past they would have been pushing Grooming. (BTW, 30 years past had they pulled something like that off they would have been shut down under RICO laws).

Woke on woke bloodbath. Can someone bring back real science fiction and not woke fiction? I love good military scifi, but hate where I am supposed to believe a main character who is basically Scarlet Johannson with only their martial arts training can defeat a seven foot tall alien warrior. This is akin to being forced to believe that the late comedian Gilbert Godfrey could beat up Mike Tyson in his prime. That disabled employee has a nasty lawsuit that, if backed by solid evidence, is slam dunk! Throw in what is retaliation and that's worth probably a few hundred thousand.
I've already mentioned elsewhere that H.P. Lovecraft had been a member of the United Amateur Press Association and that that organization devolved into publishing news only about what was going on in amateur journalism because of constant in-fighting of the members over the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Sam "Science-Fiction" Moskowitz was early fan of science fiction from the 1939 or so. From wikipedia: "While still in his teens, Moskowitz became chairman of the first World Science Fiction Convention held in New York City in 1939. He barred several members of the rival Futurians club from the convention because they threatened to disrupt it. This event is referred to by historians of fandom as the "Great Exclusion Act"." Moskowitz would go on to write a history of Science Fiction fandom which he entitled "The Immortal Storm." Someone else would later say of it that this publication was the only one of its time in which the beginning of World War II came as an anti-climax. Amateur organizations that have a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer always run the risk of becoming about how who gets to be what instead of about they they want to accomplish as a group. The officers can begin to think they are the rulers of a small country. If you are Joe Schmo you are nothing. If you are Joe Schmo, President of whatever, well that's something more than being just Joe Schmo. Science fiction fandom sometimes becomes about something other than Science Fiction because of this. I think what happened to SFWA is that they accidentally lowered the requirements for membership to the point where various amateur fandoms where able to gain entry and then control.
