The are civilian aircraft but like you said, a restricted category. Government agencies, be it Transport Canada or the FAA for example have to buy off on conversions. For example the DHC 8-400 has recently been converted to a water bomber. Requires Transport Canada certification. The CL-215 and later, CL415, are civilian not military aircraft.
@@johncraddock9871 RESTRICTED CATEGORY can be used even with Normal / utility type certified air craft - Or no civil certificate or Military contract or B # Public Service has no Type certificate , It's just another line on a piece of paper. Restricted is an operation / mission issue
@@navvet4518 Silly you, Heavy Lift Apple Valley had all ex military Sky Cranes and Sikorsky type certificated cranes were under 20... Other cranes built after Sikorsky are converted military airframes, Thanks for playing (I worked on these things in the 90s)
