Another great video Tim, thanks for sharing. Always good to hear things that you assume reaffirmed. Especially from people like you, it carries weight! Thanks again!
Hey Tim I have watched a number of your videos and have found them beneficial. I am a section hiker most on the AT. One piece of clothing I always carry is a buff. Take Care
Tim - I am binge watching your videos! Saw the Michigan Pictured Rocks hike first ( I live about 1.5 hours away) and am now an avid fan! Thank you for the great videos! I am getting my gear purchased and am practicing day hikes.. can not wait until my first overnight with son in the Spring. What a fabulous hobby! Nature, exercise and adventure. Thank you for all of your hard work on the videos- I am self employed, have a lot of time on my hands and finally have found a relaxing hobby!
Welcome to this part of the internet! :) I feel the way you do when I found out about backpacking. "Why did no one tell me this could be so much fun!" Thanks for watching.
1) I check in at 5'9". With a great number of packs, my kick-ass broad-brimmed hat won't work because the brain or top of my pack comes up too high. I mostly have to go with a baseball cap with strategic use of my Buff (or one of my $10 off-brand ones you find in the Walmart fishing department) for neck coverage. 2) If a person doesn't need convertible pants, Wrangler has a 4-way stretch line of pants (not cargo, ripstop, etc.) they sell at Walmart for about $21 that I really like. They had disappeared at all locations for a couple of months but looks like they've returned. The stretchy SwissTech ones are similar but are more narrow in the calf so I can't wear them. My calves are 18"-plus, so that's always a bit of a hurdle for me. Another convertible pants option is the fishing department of a sporting goods store. They often have very lightweight convertible ones at Bass Pro, for example, for about $35. I wouldn't trust them butt-sliding down granite, but if you don't need to be concerned about anything that might tear lightweight pants, they can be a good option. And most name brand hiking pants will run around $75-$100 on the "low" end. Similar with breathable shirts with the big-ass flap and venting. Look in the fishing department. 3) For shoes, I've mentioned on another vid that trail runners are great ... unless you're spending a lot of time grinding around on rock-covered mountains, etc. Granite can chew up that cushioning with no rubber protecting it on the sides. Just know the terrain before deciding on a shoe unless you're thru-hiking a good distance. Then just go with the trail runner and be a little careful when you hit the rocky stuff.
Very good video. Very good presentation. Good choices. There is the choice of getting some of this clothing you are presenting at the Columbia outlet store to get at vantage of the low prices. God bless you.
Thanks Tim, like what your picks basically have the same brand name and material. Although I kind of like silk pretty damn warm material and also pretty smooth when you are sleeping in your sleeping bag. Never go out without my wool socks, Wigwam, Darn Tough, Smartwool Icebreaker are my favourites and also I prefer boots to trail shoes, more protection around your ankle and today some of them are really really light, Keen, Merrell, Salomon, Vasque are my preferred one, shirts/pants and hats I tend to go with Royal Robbins. Good video, simple but to the point.
I still use cotton and cotton blends for every day wear. It is a mile to work so no problems there or the trek home. Cotton does have a place, just not the trail! The base layer I have been using for the better part of 20 years are in need of replacement. The stuff is so old I don't remember the name. I do remember it had tags that irritated the #$%^ out of me, the good ol' Buck knife fixed that. So, Thank You for sharing your choices. Yours is the fourth I have watched, it tipped the scales and I think I have a good idea on what is good in the new stuff,. I really should have replaced this stuff years ago . . .
Any good international travel store will have "Eagle Creek" black/brown/tan synthetic belts with a plastic cam buckle. The bonus is that sewn in the back side is a zipper money belt, so you don't need a wallet. Super durable and very lightweight.
Thanks for the video Tim! I've been experimenting with some Walmart brand hiking clothing. They're carrying a brand called Swiss Tech. I bought a pair of their nylon pants and got about 6 hikes & washes on them and they still look like new. Yesterday I bought one of their button down polyester shirts, a spinoff of the Columbia shirt. I didn't use it yet but it did wash well. I also have been using the Russell polyester T-shirts and they work well. You can definitely save some money over the big hiking name labels and get the same performance.
Exactly, that's what I always tell people! :) The bigger names have a better warranty but you can really get excellent performance out the gear that walmart and big box retailers sell if you look in their sports/performance section. Lots cheaper too.
yes Tim very helpful for a newbie. staying away from natural fabrics makes perfect sense...just had never thought of it. thanks for sharing. the Butch in d8n
I'm doing the west Highland walk in here in the UK, Scotland in March next year, it's a 94mile walk over 6 days. They have got to be affordable yet durable because I tend to do stupid stuff. I've checked the camping shops near to where I live, they are not cheap. For example the cheapest jacket I seen was £240. Recommend any websites that you have personally tried or know of? The weather up there is moist air conditions, mostly wet and windy like all over the UK. Tiny Midgie that can get through Midgie nets there Aswell. Great channel.
Love your channel. I'm with you on the convertible pants. I kind of half zip mine so I can get a little extra air flow. Just don't forget to throw some sun screen on the knee. Keep the videos coming.
Another great video Tim. I love it that you mention Meijers and Walmart! I almost always use Russel or Starter undergear from Walmart . Works great at about 1\2 the price of UnderArmor!! You mentioned in the video about treating your gear for ticks. I know nothing about that ... Maybe you could do a short video on that sometime!
Thanks! I think sometimes people overlook Walmart and places like Meijer but they have gotten really alot better with their gear. I actually already have done a video on this. It's time for an update though. One of my early videos and it went on too long. It's that time of the year! ruclips.net/video/_MxIKFmcFlA/видео.html
Great information. I actually wear similar clothes (except for the wide brim hat). Can't say enough about how comfy sleeping in a base layer is. I just picked up a 5.11 belt which is really sturdy to hold my knife and firearm.
I bought a hat from amazon that is very similar but it kept rubbing against my pack behind my head so I inverted the hat so that the flaps were facing upward. I looked ridiculous but it worked. I will be taking a regular ball cap next time
Awesome series Tim, It was great to learn this from you. Synthetics are my new go to, thanks man and I loved that blue hiking shirt, the short sleeve conversion thing was cool. Thumbs up Tim, I'm actually going to invest in a pair of hiking shoes rather than boots for any long hikes I go on. My dogs were barking when I hiked Mt. Chocorua last year.
Awesome video Tim! I used to always hike in a wide brim hat as well, but I found that (especially if I was going uphill steeply) it impaired my vision too much. I now hike in a peaked cap and just put loads of sunscreen on the back of my neck and the tips of my ears :)
great video Tim!! i have a pair of exofficio insect shield convertable hiking pants.. 100%nylon and they are heavenly!! love the moisture wicking shirts! btw for them hats.. you can get uber cheap ones that work extremely well at any turf or lanscaping shop.. specifically designed to block the sun and let your noggin breath. for belts i love the riggers or instructor belts they tend to be more firm. i hate flimsy belts.
I had a long conversation on the phone with Joe flowers he was telling me about some wool socks called darntuff he said there some of the best socks you can get I think he said they got a lifetime warranty. Great subject tim, I like that blue shirt.
Thanks for the advice brother. I've been looking for a new pair of convertible pants, so I will be checking out the field and stream pants. I've been using the Columbia convertible pants and I find that, the stitching on the crotch area breaks on them, and I have to restitch them. -ATB Adam
Hey Tim I like your videos and subscribed...taking some time to view them...your recommendations are spot on and clothing for the beginner is very important... I also came across those pants at mejier and got the two pair they had my size....Keep Movin'
I really like the fact that you showing some gear that the common man can afford, not like all the Columbia, north face clothing. Another great video My friend.
Thanks. I try my best to do that when I can. I realize the brand name stuff can get pricey fast. And Walmart and Meijer do have some good stuff in their performance clothing. They've gotten really competitive with the higher end stuff I think.
Great video! Why were the button down shirt when you can wear a UV rated then hoodie? What do you spray your clothes down with and why? You mentioned it but you didn’t say why
ON the note of the underwear. I have the ExOfficio boxers. And they are amazing. But I saw on another hiker video, someone said they got boxers just like ExOfficio at Walmart for like 8$. I have yet to go to my local Walmart and look for some sports underwear but if they really do have an equivalent sports boxer brief for 8$ that would be AWESOME!
I've been finding them on the cheap from Amazon, down to 12$ per pair for the 9". But the costco deal sounds great? And thanks for the attempted Hookup. but apparently that deal has expired. :(
thanks for all the info. wish I could afford alot of that. I fish alot I sweat alot. now in the last 2 or 3 years the sun blisters me. my neck exspeally I'm big guy so shorts and tank top I hate sleeves but I need to find a shirt like fishermen wear that sun ain't gonna a just make me roast but what's I've seen. I can't afford 20 to 30 for shirts and pants and I can't wear a belt got back prob bad and just found out 2 days ago 4 out if 5 discs are disapiring not good. but I have to wear shorts with draw string or elastic to keep up and man that's a chore being a big guy no butt and suspenders don't look good with shorts lol. but ide love to find something breathable while it's hot out thanks for the info. god Bless.
Good job Tim. This should help a lot of people starting out. When are you going to do a vid wearing your leggings and rain skirt. I promise we won't talk about you ! "much"
Tim. Isn't the point of hiking to look your best and nail the perfect photo of you on the trail for a profile pic? 😜 Appreciated the insight. And I'm sure you just generated some new business to Walmart and Meijers.
Lol! I joke with Josh that we spend close to 50% of our time taking photos and video. Thanks for watching. Yea, Walmart and Meijer have gotten pretty good with some of their performance gear. I've been impressed.
What about single layer cotton? Because yes, it absorbs moisture very easily, like a bandana. But like a bandana, it also dry's very quickly. Thoughts?
I would avoid in all cases. You'd most likely be fine on a day hike where you know you'll be back to the car. Any extended trips I would avoid cotton at all costs. Two big reasons: cotton does not wick moisture away from your skin effectively and when cotton gets wet it does not insulate you. If the outside air is colder than your body temp you will feel cold.
Ha, not sure if you're poking fun with the first question. :) I tuck it for a couple of reasons but tucking helps if you're cold. I mostly do it because untucked with a buttoned shirt makes me feel like a slob. 😅 I wear the grip6 belts. Something light but will stay in place while hiking. I'm a fan. If you're carrying more weight on your belt or in your pants then I like the 5.11 trainer/instructor belt. Whichever one is stiffer.
Hey Tim,actually no fun poking intended.I have a couple nice nylon shirts that have the button up sleeve app, collars dont button down though, but the tails are long enough to mostly be in my way.Sorta feels like it intereferes with my waist belt on the pack etc.Wondering what other people do.So I mostly quit wearing shirt although it was pretty breathable.I might have to revisit them now though.
I really like the Cool Max shirts for hot weather (I live in NM). They breathe and are nicer on the skin than some synthetics. Coolclothingusa dot com carries shirts; made in US; that sell for $15/each.
Thanks Tim, could you put links to the clothing that you mentioned?
Will do. Affiliate links:

Great video Tim, really enjoying your channel, and thanks for those links.
Tim Watson You forgot the belt boo
I like that you show low cost options for clothing! And the thinking that goes behind these options.
I follow a hammock forum and someone asked for RUclips channel suggestions. Your name was mentioned in top 3. Keep it up Tim
@Paul Corrona send me the link to the Hammok forum please sir
Another great video Tim, thanks for sharing. Always good to hear things that you assume reaffirmed. Especially from people like you, it carries weight! Thanks again!

2 year old video just as valuable today as it ever was. good stuff. thanks alot man.

I looked at the 5.11 belts too but since I pocket carry I didn't see the need for too much rigidity. I noticed we have the same shirt I think!
My blue on is a Guide Series from Gander Mountain. Same great taste in color though lol
Ahhh. Yes, yes we have that in common for sure. lol
I bought a hat from amazon that is very similar but it kept rubbing against my pack behind my head so I inverted the hat so that the flaps were facing upward. I looked ridiculous but it worked. I will be taking a regular ball cap next time
Going to be a good series with some smart info
thanks!
Into Thin Air is an awesome book too! Nice channel. Keep the videos coming! :)
Thanks!
Great video sure helped me out so next time I plan on a trip thanks brother
Awesome, thanks for coming by Joseph.
Yea, my feet really ache in boots too. Glad you're enjoying the series. They take some time to film but it's fun to do knowledge dump vids.
Can't wait to see your second movie on April 20th!
Ha! "We got a wise guy over here!" 😂Seriously I hope they do justice to the first.
Tim Watson Hahaha
Tim Watson Same man. Hope it's good! 👍
awesome advice, I love the two layer socks
Yea, I'm a big fan. They've worked well for me.
Great video Tim! I always said you are the Sergio Valente of the hiking community! Very sharp dresser!
haha! I had to google Sergio Valente.
God... I hope I just didn't age myself!!!
I use the reebok spandex type briefs and they work great. I liked them so much that I switched over to them for every day wear. Lol
Ha, if I could afford to replace everything with ex oficio I would!
Awesome video Tim! I used to always hike in a wide brim hat as well, but I found that (especially if I was going uphill steeply) it impaired my vision too much. I now hike in a peaked cap and just put loads of sunscreen on the back of my neck and the tips of my ears :)
Good idea. I think I have a bigger head so it doesn't impair my vision as much. :D
Hahahahahahahahaha!
great video Tim!! i have a pair of exofficio insect shield convertable hiking pants..
Insect shield stuff is great for keeping the ticks away. Ex oficio makes awesome stuff.
I had a long conversation on the phone with Joe flowers he was telling me about some wool socks called darntuff he said there some of the best socks you can get I think he said they got a lifetime warranty. Great subject tim, I like that blue shirt.
Darn tuff makes great stuff, they just didn't work well for me. I needed that double layer or I still got hot spots. Thanks Rob.
Great video and yes , it is very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks!
Some good info Tim! You've done your homework buddy! And, a lot of field testing I'm sure!
Thanks Todd, yea these clothes have seen alot.
Thanks for the advice brother. I've been looking for a new pair of convertible pants, so I will be checking out the field and stream pants. I've been using the Columbia convertible pants and I find that, the stitching on the crotch area breaks on them, and I have to restitch them. -ATB Adam
Yea, the field and stream pants have been good. Just recently picked up a marmot pair (not convertible). Will see how those work.
Hey Tim I like your videos and subscribed...taking some time to view them...your recommendations are spot on and clothing for the beginner is very important... I also came across those pants at mejier and got the two pair they had my size....Keep Movin'
Awesome, yea Meijer and Walmart are really stepping up their outdoors game. And thanks!
Love your videos. Good advice!
Thanks!
Grip 6 belts are cool I dont use to hike with though
Yea I'm a fan of mine.
Nylon pants are the best for hiking!
Great video! Why were the button down shirt when you can wear a UV rated then hoodie?
What do you spray your clothes down with and why? You mentioned it but you didn’t say why
Just pulled trigger on a Grip6 Ninja.
Sweet, I have the same one in addition to another.
I agree with this advice. Good video!
thanks!
Great info Tim! Thanks man!
Thanks for swinging by Korbin.
Hmmm. I might have to look into those. That would be great.
A quick update, might be too late: Costco $24 for 3 pair Ex Officio, Bought'em yesterday as replacements.
I've been finding them on the cheap from Amazon, down to 12$ per pair for the 9". But the costco deal sounds great? And thanks for the attempted Hookup. but apparently that deal has expired. :(
Noah Chicoine Sorry, they were on the local shelves last Thursday, but at local stores YMMV and especially so online.
Nice presentation Tim as usual
thanks!
Great information and very important.
Indeed.
Was here Tim. I hear you. I have never worn a REAL TREE.
lol!
Great video with awesome tips. I don't know who gave you a thumbs down but they probably hike in jeans and cowboy boots.
Great tips Tim!
thanks!
I've got the same hat. It's fantastic!
Where in Colorado did you live?
I lived in Pueblo. 😄
thanks for all the info. wish I could afford alot of that. Thanks for watching Heath.
Yes sir thanks for sharing.
Good info thanks Tim.
Thanks for coming by.
THAT THUMBNAIL IS HILARIOUS! I'm a little bit 'a hiker.. I'm a little bit 'a 9-5.
Lol, my friend Subaru Josh says its hiker business casual. :D
Oh yeah. I see that Brandon Sanderson in the back😎
Good job Tim. This should help a lot of people starting out. When are you going to do a vid wearing your leggings and rain skirt. I promise we won't talk about you !
"much"
LOL! Rain skirt testing to come!
Damn that hat.. Now i want one normally i use a buff and sunglasses but to be honest the sunglasses are a pain in the but
Tim. Isn't the point of hiking to look your best and nail the perfect photo of you on the trail for a profile pic? 😜
Appreciated the insight.
Gotta have a hat for sure; I have such little hair ;_;Great video Tim
lol, my buddies get sunburned up there.
Thank you. Great explanation.
If your wife and kids backpack as well maybe you could share what they wear.
Hi from Holland! Do you recommend the ExOfficio Give-N-Go, Boxer or Boxer Brief version?
Hi! I'm partial to the give n go myself. I have the length that goes to around mid thigh. I think it's a six inch leg.
I have that OR hat and same color
Does Tim wear that shirt tucked in or out? Also,do you wear a belt?If so,any recommendations?
Ha, Subaru Josh says I look like I'm ready for a school board meeting. :D
Hei I really enjoy your channel ☺ Keep it up!
Thanks!
Hey Tim my name is Stan from Alabama ... In your opinion what's the best lightweight rain jacket that you have tried ???
Depends on your price point BUT I love my OR Helium II. I tried the OR foray and returned it. I like how minimalist and light the Helium II is.
I didn't believe it about cotton until I hiked in cotton.
Great review!!!
thanks!
good video.
The only people who might laugh at your hat are those who have never seen the ZPacks Pointy Hat. Even I have to draw the line somewhere :D
lol! Yea, I draw the line there too. Check out Jaxx Drinkwater on youtube, he has one!
“It’s a bold choice”. Hahahahaha
Great video Tim.. Business casual . lmao!
Lol, seriously every time we go hike he seems surprised at me "dressing up." :D
Like the t shirts!!!:)
That blue shirt cold
Great info on clothing, and the hat doesn't look that bad
Thanks, and yes I like the hat! :D
Good stuff, Tim!! ;-)
thanks!
I really like the Cool Max shirts for hot weather (I live in NM). They breathe and are nicer on the skin than some synthetics. Coolclothingusa dot com carries shirts; made in US; that sell for $15/each.
I'll have to check that out!
Tim Watson? Ye desi hai.
That bookshelf looks like it's struggling
Your bookshelf is seriously sagging.
Yea, it's overloaded. My wife has a book problem. What you see is the overflow bookshelf. We have two or three others around the house.
