Is The Premier League Overrated?

    A big problem with this whole discussion is......they just don't watch any foreign football! Their knowledge of it is surface level at best, so how would they know how good or bad the other leagues are?
    When they talk about La Liga they only think about Madrid and Barcelona. They completely ignore the likes of Girona, Athleico Madrid, Bilbao, Sociedad and Betis. Can they even name a single Girona player? I doubt it. Girona are 3rd in the table! They could still finish 2nd. They're not even on these guys radar!
    When they talk about German football, they only know Bayern and Dortmund, and they only really know about Leverkusen because of the incredible season they've had. But what about Stuttgart in 3rd? Leipzig in 4th? What about Eintracht Frankfurt who have had a fantastic season of their own and sit in 6th? Do they know about 3rd division Saarbruken making it all the way to the semi final of the DFB Pokal, beating the likes of Bayern, Frankfurt and Monchengladbach along the way? Probably not. They don't watch it!
    English football is over-rated in that English _fans_ live in a bubble of their own making. And I say this AS an Englishman.
    But I actually watch a lot of foreign football and it's a _lot better_ than most English fans give it credit for! There's always this 'surprise' when an English team loses to a 'less famous' foreign team like Brighton losing to Marseille or Liverpool losing to Atalanta, but it's like, yeah......these foreign teams are ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD! You would know that if you actually watched any of them!

      Surely citing Girona being so successful would support the argument that La Liga is weak?

    • @Epsilon04

      Agree with a lot of your content here, but disagree with the Liverpool Atlanta part.
      Atalanta did brilliantly and Gasperini is a great coach, but it was still a major shock. Liverpool are the third most successful(joint) club in Europe for European cups won and have been regularly competing for the title over the last 6-7 years, winning many trophies in that time too. They also still sit only three points off top spot in the PL, whilst Atalanta are thirty two points away from Inter.
      Again, I am not saying that this means Liverpool deserved to beat Atalanta, they obviously didn't and got completely outplayed over two legs. But it was still a major surprise and would be unlikely to happen again if the tie was replayed.

    • @BadgerOff32
      @BadgerOff32 Месяц назад +4

      @@Epsilon04 Oh don't get me wrong, the Liverpool - Atalanta result was still a huge shock, but I definitely think the size of the scoreline in that first leg that was the biggest shock. If Atalanta had won 1-0 it would have been a big surprise, but the fact that they came away from Anfield as 3-0 winners stunned everyone.
      I think more apt one would be Brighton vs Roma. Most people seemed to think Brighton had that one won before kick off, so for us to get absolutely battered 4-0 was quite a kick in the gut.
      It certainly shows that there is a lot more quality in the Italian league than a lot of English fans and pundits realize.
      Same could be said for the French league too, with Lens beating Arsenal, Brighton losing to Marseille, Villa scraping past Lille. It's not quite the "farmers league" that most people label it as.

    • @BadgerOff32
      @BadgerOff32 Месяц назад +10

      @@timdurgan What, you mean like Leicester winning the Premier League after nearly getting relegated the season before, or Villa likely finishing in the top 4 this season, only 5 years after being in the Championship?
      I don't think it points at a weak league, if anything I think it shows more the fact that Girona have assembled a very good team to be able to go toe-to-toe with Barca and both Madrid teams all season.
      Don't forget though, that Girona are partially owned by the City Group, who own Man City, so they're not exactly skint, and this isn't exactly a fluke. They HAVE invested in order to get this good.

      @danielmcgrath680 Месяц назад +3

      I agree with some here, I think it can be overrated by English fans and still be underrated by foreigners. Its undoubtedly the biggest, highest quality, most exciting league on the planet. But it certainly has flaws. Yes we're always surprised when an English team loses to a foreign side outside of like..5 (Madrid, Bayern etc) but there is fairly good reason for it. Realistically, Liverpool shouldnt be losing to Atalanta! Since 2017 PL teams have had the most UCL finalists and winners with even dodgy sides like West Ham getting a damn European trophy. Top to bottom theres quality teams with quality managers, the style and level of football is so, so good. The only gripes i have with the league is the overrating of English players, which has happened since the dawn of time, and Citys dominance which they cheated to do. Im definitely biased but foreign football fans, ESPECIALLY LA LIGA, seem to disagree with everything here. But im biased so let me know what you think - sorry for the wall of text.

    As an outsider I honestly think the worst thing about the prem is its media (including RUclips).
    2 main reasons:
    - the fact that most of them don't watch other leagues (which is normal), but then start talking like they know what they're talking about. Case and point buvey talking about Barcelona when he only watched one single game (if that).
    - the fact that they literally worship pep and his play style like it's jesus coaching them. So when Madrid for example (who aren't even in their prime yet) defend perfectly and gets the win they start talking about that team like it's not the greatest team in the world. Suddenly some nobody starts comparing them to Southgate.

When Serie A was the top league, it wasn’t viewed as so massively superior by its own fans and the football media. Whereas English football’s fans and the football media in general make it seem like it’s the only league currently worth watching.
