  • The Zealots were a group of Jewish revolutionaries during Jesus Christ’s lifetime mentioned in the gospels.
The original Hebrew word for “zealot” in the Bible was kanai, which means “one who is zealous on behalf of God.” To be zealous is to have a strong feeling of support for a cause, person, or ideal.
Many of the Jews under Roman rule during the first century wanted independence from foreign powers. The zealots organized political rebellions against the Romans, which led to violence and arrests.
Luke identifies one of the Twelve Apostles as “Simon the Zealot” to distinguish him from Simon Peter. However, the title may have been a mistranslation of “Cananean” which is the way that Mark and Matthew describe him.
Years after Jesus’s death and Resurrection, the zealots played a prominent role in the First Jewish-Roman War of 66-74 CE. Upset about taxation and oppression, the Zealots organized a revolt. The Roman generals Vespasian (who would soon become the emperor) and Titus attacked Jerusalem and eventually destroyed the city and the Temple. The Zealots were later blamed for starting inner-fighting among the Jews and a civil war that made resisting the Romans impossible.
