welder by trade and this is the only video i have come across that shows how to properly spin the filler material to achieve a solid bond- way better than just mashing it in! thank you sir-
Finally, a real plastic welding video, not a soldering one. Welder by trade here too. As soon as I saw the swirling I grinned from ear to ear. As it weird that I'm actually looking forward to scratching my new kayak now?
Lots of cheap stuff is made out of HDPE, which is what you need to weld your kayak. There is a triangle molded into the plastic item, usually on the bottom, with a 2 in it if it is HDPE. Gas cans, flower watering cans, and loads of other cheap things are made out of this stuff. All of it will melt into and fill a crack in an HDPE kayak. You can buy welding rods, but you don't have to have one if you have an old plastic gas can lying around.
Had poly craft nearly 20 years never had problem with itfished rough conditions narooma too evens head crossing bars bad seas all conditions still have it love it fished everything from shallows too 40kms offshore if you guys break boats not know how
Great tut and info...A lot like brazing metal just way cooler and with hot air instead of flame..My guess practice makes perfect...Gona get me a bucket fresh clean and not brittle...Cut out a couple stirps for welding rod...then make a few deep scratch and holes in bucket...then Practice the above instructions on bucket instead of KAYAK tell i feel confident.....Be sure Bucket is HPDE 2...
if the plastic is not too thin, try sanding off the high points, then use wax to fill the low areas and buff it out. this does 2 things, it fills in the scratches, and adds a smoother finish which slips through the water nicer.
fantastic. I've got a 2013 Stomper 90 with a long gouge in it, 2mm wide, 0.5mm deep right under the cockpit. I was wondering weather I should infill that like you would on a second pass of your weld. or just leave it. I have the heatgun, I need to get a step down nozle and rods so no rush.
Thanks guys it is a good demo on how to weld, If using a donor boat for welding rods is the size of the rod important, also would you say this produces a boat as good as new or is there always a weak spot?

Thank you for the video. Quick question. I have a small dinghy plastic boat that developed a hole. Does the boat have to be made from HDPE in order to do plastic welding? If yes, how can I tell whether it's HDPE or not?
I’m almost positive that all plastic water crafts are HDPE. If you need a piece of material for the weld or patch. Just look for the triangle or square with number 2 in it. Hardware store buckets, even some detergent containers will be correct materials

The only good video on plastic welding on RUclips. Good bond, good technique And a nice finish.
I agree with the others, this is the best plastic boat welding video I've seen.
Excellent tutorial. This man knows what he's talking about! Great job, thank you!
FYI: This is the ONLY GOOD video on boat welding I have seen on RUclips!
Nice! Boat welding is tough work to do.
Top Kayaker
Yeah most others just melt the material they are adding and smear it to the crack. That is not welding.
That's the best plastic welding job I've ever seen done
If he’s still with the company, give this man a raise
was hoping to hear him sing "silver and gold" at the end

You tutorial is helping me bringing clasic kayaks and new kaykas all across Earth,
thank you Very Much!!!

I'm a welder by trade I've never welded plastic but this looks like a good way of doing it to me , Nice job and nice clip
This is the best crack repair on a HDPE kayak in RUclips

Beautiful!! Thank you for sharing your tech! I will be doing a test pnl and atempting your twirling trick to mix the plastic soon. Thank You!
Excellent! Thank you.
thx Dude..... thats Welding in plastic top nice
Nice work!

Can this method be used to repair Christmas blow molds that are made of HDPE plastics?
fantastic.

Is that a Milwaukee heat gun with an adapter tip?
Will this work on an old green Colman canoe? From the 80's
Brilliant ThankYou
Do you think this will work on a Malibu extreme kayak the hulls are thinner

you dont drill a hole to keep the crack from spreading ?
nileor1 that would be true but the crack would go all the way through for you to need to drill it. This equates to a deep surface scratch realy
I want to weld plastic pods on to a plastic boat would this work
where i can buy the welding rod?
what is the rods called and where can i buy please
thanks
You can make Rods by cutting strips of any HDPE2 plastic. The emblem will be on most plastic products like five gallon buckets milk crates and such

Some are LDPE
Thanks a lot!
how do u find out what type of plastic the boat is made of?
contact the manufacturer to make sure, but nearly all kayaks are HDPE like the one in this video.
Excellent!
Excellent.
Obie wan canoe be:)
thank you for sharing
Everyone asking where to get the rod, most of these boats are made of the same plastic as milk jugs....
It's called a V butt weld👍
Super
remove scratches from dragging on mud or sand? You don NOT remove said scratches.. you ignore them ;D
what?
You can light an empty oil bottle on fire and let it drip onto the crack
Plastic boats crack dude... If you're hitting enough rocks to crack a boat in 6 weeks of use you should already know this though...
