I found 2 of these in front of a house today that said FREE... there were 4 but, I only grabbed 2. They were filthy to say the least. The motors and fans and switch were like one piece. I took them apart and cleaned them up. Two really nice window fans. I didn't have use for the folding (flange) part so I just threw them away. Thanks for the video!!! Love living in a college town. When the students leave it's salvaging time!
I actually LOVED your video. I felt it was extremely detailed, though I didn't have the balls to tear apart the electrical stuff. I DID get it cleaned out pretty well and still oiled some of it in place, though getting the fan blades off was a ROYAL pain. I spent over an hour just trying to pry them off, (yes I took off the metal ring first), BUT, to be sure I don't have that problem in the future, I honed the fan holes out more with a big drill bit and the rings also did not go on as easily as yours, but with a little tap tap tap with a screwdriver and hammer, the rings are on and it's good as new. Quite honestly, I have a really old twin fan that I have just thrown the entire thing in the bathtub with soapy water and scrubbed all that I could get to, set it in the sun for a day, plugged it in the next day and that thing is STILL running, 15 years later. :)
Thanks! Glad you found it useful. Most anything electrical can get wet and still work perfectly fine afterwards as long as it’s thoroughly dried out before power is applied again. For a fan like this, I’d be concerned about the bearings and perhaps the switch’s contacts, I suspect the water would take a toll on both of them eventually through rust or oxidation.
*Works great with **Fastly.Cool** , exactly as described. Love the fact that it can push, pull, or exchange air with the push of a button. The remote is a nice bonus too!*
My son gifted me with two of similar fans. Both need cleaning now so I needed to learn how to remove the parts one by one. Thank you. Very helpful video.
Thank you so much for this video! My fan isn't the exact same model, but I was able to successfully get the job done on my own!! The clips were the hardest part, but I just decided to be okay with breaking the tabs on one side. Everything still holds together just fine! Thanks!!!
Hello all, my boyfriend thrifted a fan that is a similar model to this one over a year ago and it served us very well (we live in the Appalachias and the summers are hot, humid and muggy to say the least). Like many others in the comments the part we really struggled with when taking the fan apart was the two "clips" on the side of the fan with the extender piece. We ended up needing to sets of hands to do this. We first pulled out the extender piece so we could see inside to look at how the clips were secured. We tried a bunch of pulling and prying but what eventually worked for us was this: one of us took a small, thing screwdriver and wedged it under the "legs" of the clips that secured them in their slots (that was a bad descriptions, i apologize) while the other pinched the front and the back of the fan together (honestly can't remember why) while these pieces where pinched together the screwdriver person popped the legs out of the slots while also pulling on the clip from the outside. This eventually got the clips out. When we went to reassemble the fan however we found out that one of the clips "legs" had broken so it then became useless. It really seems like these pieces were not ever intented to come off. Idk if this will help anyone but i thought I'd leave it here just incase 😊
These are definitely not designed for ease of service. Like everything else now, the intention is to just discard when it gets dirty and buy a new one.
Great video! May skip the electrical part, but I really want to clean the inside. I've had my fan for 5+ years running every night (including winter) except for when it is too hot and I use the central a/c. It still works great! I love that they are a little loud and create good white noise. Thinking about attaching a furnace filter to the back to try to keep it clean going forward and block some of the dust from coming into my room. Going to tackle this tomorrow.
Thanks! I would not use the filter, it will create too much air resistance and the motors will run hotter than they're supposed to due to decreased air flow.
Thank you for your video. I was ready to cut those clips on the end off, but fortunately through your video I was able to get them out and successfully clean my Holmes wiundow fan. Thanks again.
What the heck are you talking about? The ONE SINGLE PART OF THE VIDEO I NEEDED TO SEE (TAKING THE CLIPS OUT) WAS MISSING! You figured it out by looking at the hair on his arms?
Great video. My fan hasn't been cleaned (ever) and it is a real mess but still works. Will try this cleaning first-if I break it, time for a new fan anyway.
I used Zep commercial heavy-duty citrus degreaser and hosed it off. I dried it for a week. Not recommended to use water but I let it dry good. Turned it on and it was like new!
I have a Magavox twin or dual fan. The electronics are different (remote control, clockwise and counter clockwise blade motions and speed). The housing, however, appears to be very similar to the Holmes Twin Window Fan you worked on. I like this fan because it's more quiet than other window fans but cleaning the fan is a problem as you and others have indicated. The clips are very difficult to remove. I resorted to using a screwdriver as a lever and pulling out the clips by brute force and, fortunately, the clips didn't break. Moreover, the clips are equally difficult to reinsert in the housing. Your video inspired me to remove the motors and electronics. I wanted to put the front and back housings into the dishwasher but they wouldn't fit. I didn't think of removing the upper rack of our dishwasher, that might have helped. Making it difficult for the consumer to clean the blades and other internal parts is, I think, poor design … or is it? Fan company production manager: "Some have commented that the seams on the housing are a bit rough. Are the molds not fitting together properly? Is there any way to smooth these seams out? Engineer: Oh, no, sir. This is a positive design feature for us. These rough seams really catch the dirt and they tear apart cotton swabs and paper towels very quickly. Also, we’ve designed the grill to be almost impossible to clean with a standard toothbrush. (Micro-brushes for cleaning baby bottle parts are more effective - they’re cylindrical less than a quarter of an inch wide.) The clip design makes it impossible for consumers to clean the inside of the fan. Most customers will give up on cleaning their fan very quickly. They will be forced to live with a filthy fan or throw the disgusting thing out and buy a new fan. Our studies show that only 4% of our customers will persist in cleaning their fan covers and blades and less than 1% have the skills to take apart the fan and clean it properly. Manager: We can’t do much about obsessive customers but what about this last 1 percent? Engineer: If we can contact them, we should hire them. They’ll really show us how to prevent anyone from taking apart our product.
The Phillips head screw just didn’t want to come out This is very difficult to open so I just washed it and dried it for a week and it was clean so I wasn’t embarrassed because it was soo soo dirty!
Hi; can't we simply cover it with some of that foam ac filter material to keep it from getting dirty in the first place or would that added resistance be to hard on the fan? Thanks
I washed the whole fan in the tub and it's not working only light is on . It was working after washing but after 24-hours it stopped working. If you have time please answer
Can you help me figure out why one side stopped working? I've taken it apart and cleaned and can tell the battery is getting heat on the broken side but no spinning?

Hi,
The fuse on this fan died out and I dont have another one, would anyone know where I could get another fuse.
Perhaps the Amazon.
Would it be doable to "Regularly" blow it out with a leaf blower? Thanks
Unless you're using it in an environment where the dust would be sticky, such as a kitchen, the leaf blower would probably work fine.
