  • The engineers at H2W have developed a new lower cost voice coil positioning stage that incorporates dual mounting options. H2W reduced cost by using a lower resolution encoder and simplified design. This system includes optional air cooling that would allow the stage to achieve higher continuous forces. The stage has standard mounting holes that allow it to be mounted either vertically or horizontally. In the vertical orientation, the lighter weight coil assembly is the moving component. When the stage is oriented horizontally the overall height of the stage is reduced and the magnet assembly becomes the moving component.
The voice coil positioning stage (VCS20-020-LB-12) is a closed loop system that can be used for high speed positioning applications. The stage is driven by the NCC type actuator (NCC20-18-020-1X) and is guided by precision linear recirculating bearings. The voice coil has a 2.0" [50 mm] stroke; generates 2 lbs [8.9 N] of continuous force and 6 lbs [26.7 N] of peak force. It includes a lower cost 12 micron resolution linear encoder. There are two mounting options: one of which allows it to be oriented vertically with the coil moving, or mounted horizontally with the magnet assembly moving. Voice coil positioning stages are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.
    Features:
    • Lower Cost
    • Dual mounting options
    • High acceleration
    • Compact footprint
    • Optional air cooling
    • Custom strokes and force configurations available

HI, i am looking for one that can stand for 2kg load capacity above in case I put it 90 degree compared with horizontal line. Is it possile? which parameters I can see to know about that? Secondly, which parts in voice coil actuator that keep it at zero position without current or voltage input and which parameters or equations to check when it stand for 2kg load capactiry?
    Thanks.

Its like a servo. If you don't apply power, it will not hold position.

Voice coil actuators have no inherent braking capability in a power-off situation. It is possible to add a spring to compensate for a static load and reduce duty cycle in this situation - this is an option available on our moving coil actuators from SMAC.

This looks like an expensive thing. Interesting how the force is related to the current position of the 2 parts.

Is this approach solid enough to use as a small shaper tool for hobbing out steel.

I think the force available is very low. If you were OK taking cuts a micron at a time then yes. Otherwise... no.

How does it get position feedback? And what is the resolution?

It uses a linear encoder for position feedback. The one shown in the video has a 12-micron resolution encoder. Other resolutions are available as well.
