I watched my granny go through dementia, and it's a hard thing to watch. I may make comments that seem like they are against the channel, but they are not. I like documentaries, because i don't watch tv or movie's, because they are garbage, not like when i was a kid with the old black and white tv.

I watched my grandmother be ravaged by Alzheimer's disease, we lived 200metres from the University where Richard later prepared for this research trip, the irony just made me cry. I watched Richard play rugby for Pontypridd at Sardis Road many times in the past, those days brought many happy times to the people of my town. I've watched this documentary and I feel nothing but awestruck admiration for what Richard has been doing and why he's doing it. Good on you mate, the people of Ponty will always count you as a true legend.

I also watched my mother suffer. Ten years… she got very angry the last two years. It’s a terrible disease. I’m 52 and do sudoku and crossword puzzles to keep my brain working.
And then to find out they faked all the Alzheimer’s research for many years is sickening.
Good luck. I’m scared to death. Anytime I forget something I think uh oh. Bahahahaha...😆😂

Being unable to summit Everest due to your condition, as you noted, is most certainly heartbreaking. Even so, your sacrificing of your body and time for those two long years to help those with dementia is beyond commendable with results that may tip the scale in finding a cure/help. In my opinion, even though you were unable to summit Everest you summited a mountain much higher and more difficult to scale. Your tempered and humble response to the canceling of your climb and desire for your safety and that of your team is a lesson many extreme and weekend athletes can learn from. While things did not go as you planned, as often in this life they don't for any of us, remember to walk by faith and not sight.

I’m only about 20 minutes into this documentary but have to go to work and it hits me hard. I’m so happy to see how dedicated he is to trying to help cure dementia. My Grandpa had dementia. It was very hard watching him decline. He died of covid but being a caregiver who works with people with dementia I know how hard it is. Every day I work I wish there was a cure because it’s hard watching people decline. I wish there was a cure and not just a medication to slow it down. Richard Parks you are a hero.

I have worked as a dementia nurse for 27 years. I really love my job to take care of and care for the affected. It is a terrible disease. I hope there will be a cure in the future.
It is also called the relative's disease because they suffer just as much.

    • @TheBandit7613

We suffered more. My wife and I took care of her mother until she passed. We own the house next door so we moved her in there, her mom wanted to still do things on her own. We hired a nurse to stay when we couldn't be there.
All the women on my wife's family have developed alzheimer's.
The scary thing, I can see it slowly creeping into my wife at 55. No one else could see it but I do. She randomly forgets things she shouldn't. Out kids agree with me. She doesn't remember things like I do. She will develop alzheimer's. I can see it already.

Altitude sickness or mountain sickness is the biggest risk to Mt. Everest climbers and also fresh travelers to Tibet. It will affect many aspects of their health. The higher they get, the less oxygen there is in the air.

Both sicknesses are very indiscriminate and can hit the fittest and sometimes the less fit get away with it. It’s not really based on fitness. I have not climbed Everest but have repeatedly climbed high peaks. Respect and a slowly and steady pace especially for the first few days is a huge game changer. It’s a case of the tortoise beating the hare. Brains rather than ego.

I wonder what percentage of people who’ve climbed this high mountain if submitted to these blood tests up there would have had any different results.’ Normal blood specs are just not the norm at crazy high altitudes but it doesn’t stop them climbing. He was fully coherent, fit and doing well. Showing none of the danger signs one can access without blood tests. Either way he did a grand job for the research though.

Adaptation to the climate is a real thing. The people native to Nepal actually can withstand the higher altitudes. Their white blood cell count is much higher than someone that isn't used to that. For instance, I would never be able to climb mount everest, but I've been use to high temperature & humidity my whole life. I actually get sick when temperatures get under 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I refuse to have air conditioning in my house, because cold air seems to always make me sick. My immune system is great, I just can't take the cold.

Funny because where I live the average daily temp is 3 Celsius (37.4f). Mid summer temps being about 15 to 30c and mid winters between -5 to -30c. I go snowboarding November to may and hiking from June to October. I love Canada. In April May I drive from a warm snow free city into a winter wonderland and back it’s so fun 😂

From what I read in the comments, I think ppl have missed the point of the attempt to climb the mountain without supplemental oxygen. The conditions of this mountain do not allow for ordinary humans to attempt summit as they wanted in the name of research. Good attempt in any case and it was a good call on him to abort the mission. Hopefully they'll glean something from the samples they did get.

Everest is the highest terrestrial peak on the planet however it’s not the most difficult peak of the fourteen 8,000m peaks. It’s also not the most dangerous alpine climbing challenge.
At altitudes over 8,000m (the death zone) oxygen levels drop to about 7% compared to a sea level concentration of almost 21%.
The air pressure and temperature are also lower. It’s an extreme environment where very little life survives

Also why was the guy really telling him to descend ? Maybe besides it being a health risk issue he had some jealousy and hate on the guy thats actually trying to achieve something for other then himself.

    Lots of money…….!
What is the greatest good we can do with that money …… how do we perceive our lives when it comes to personal challenges……goals….!!
    Do we help the needy?
Or do we spend money on an ego, driven sport, climbing up a ice cube of hot ice?
