a former Welsh rugby star devoted his life in helping the find relief and hopefully one day a cure formt dementia. Parks picks his team and they’re off to Nepal via Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the world.
I watched my granny go through dementia, and it's a hard thing to watch. I may make comments that seem like they are against the channel, but they are not. I like documentaries, because i don't watch tv or movie's, because they are garbage, not like when i was a kid with the old black and white tv.
I watched my grandmother be ravaged by Alzheimer's disease, we lived 200metres from the University where Richard later prepared for this research trip, the irony just made me cry. I watched Richard play rugby for Pontypridd at Sardis Road many times in the past, those days brought many happy times to the people of my town. I've watched this documentary and I feel nothing but awestruck admiration for what Richard has been doing and why he's doing it. Good on you mate, the people of Ponty will always count you as a true legend.
I also watched my mother suffer. Ten years… she got very angry the last two years. It’s a terrible disease. I’m 52 and do sudoku and crossword puzzles to keep my brain working. And then to find out they faked all the Alzheimer’s research for many years is sickening. Good luck. I’m scared to death. Anytime I forget something I think uh oh. Bahahahaha...😆😂
Being unable to summit Everest due to your condition, as you noted, is most certainly heartbreaking. Even so, your sacrificing of your body and time for those two long years to help those with dementia is beyond commendable with results that may tip the scale in finding a cure/help. In my opinion, even though you were unable to summit Everest you summited a mountain much higher and more difficult to scale. Your tempered and humble response to the canceling of your climb and desire for your safety and that of your team is a lesson many extreme and weekend athletes can learn from. While things did not go as you planned, as often in this life they don't for any of us, remember to walk by faith and not sight.
Deepest respect for you! One mountaineer that is responsible and doing it for the right reason’s! Turn back is I think a greater accomplishment than standing on the summit! Because self control is the hardest thing a person can do in life!
Well done Mr. Parks. To overcome your personal goal for the greater good makes you stronger than steel. You returned alive and healthy. Had there been a fatality, this documentary would not be worth viewing. God bless you in all your endeavours.
The View! Richard I am proud of you and your accomplishments but I'm even more proud of you for making the right decision in the end that sets an amazing example
I’m only about 20 minutes into this documentary but have to go to work and it hits me hard. I’m so happy to see how dedicated he is to trying to help cure dementia. My Grandpa had dementia. It was very hard watching him decline. He died of covid but being a caregiver who works with people with dementia I know how hard it is. Every day I work I wish there was a cure because it’s hard watching people decline. I wish there was a cure and not just a medication to slow it down. Richard Parks you are a hero.

I have worked as a dementia nurse for 27 years. I really love my job to take care of and care for the affected. It is a terrible disease. I hope there will be a cure in the future. It is also called the relative's disease because they suffer just as much.
We suffered more. My wife and I took care of her mother until she passed. We own the house next door so we moved her in there, her mom wanted to still do things on her own. We hired a nurse to stay when we couldn't be there. All the women on my wife's family have developed alzheimer's. The scary thing, I can see it slowly creeping into my wife at 55. No one else could see it but I do. She randomly forgets things she shouldn't. Out kids agree with me. She doesn't remember things like I do. She will develop alzheimer's. I can see it already.
Respect! That's absolutely honorable that you could turn back and come home alive. You are a real hero because heroes do some great achievements (which you did!) for their relatives and nations and want to protect their families, and for that reason, they should live long and healthy life.
Heureusement que sur terre il existe des gens comme vous. Peu importe que vous n'êtes pas aller au sommet, vous avez rempli votre mission importante pour la science et vous pouvez être fier de celà. Amicalement
I think if they test all base camp, then they do not recomend anyone to climb up … Richard is a hero and hands up for him for doing all of that for such a good thing, I think condition he was he would be easily able to reach any world peak summit with a goid sherpas 🙌🙌
Altitude sickness or mountain sickness is the biggest risk to Mt. Everest climbers and also fresh travelers to Tibet. It will affect many aspects of their health. The higher they get, the less oxygen there is in the air.
Both sicknesses are very indiscriminate and can hit the fittest and sometimes the less fit get away with it. It’s not really based on fitness. I have not climbed Everest but have repeatedly climbed high peaks. Respect and a slowly and steady pace especially for the first few days is a huge game changer. It’s a case of the tortoise beating the hare. Brains rather than ego.
O my God ....guys , i love❤❤❤ you experience ..i love your adventure .....i hope someday i Will come to mount Everest and stand my foot on peak Everest
Well……. “To each and every man’s profession”! I choose life for every endeavor of challenge, wishing no one lose their life. Life is a gift. My heart goes out to every one who lost their life…. Heartbreak and many tears….. What can one say……!
I wonder what percentage of people who’ve climbed this high mountain if submitted to these blood tests up there would have had any different results.’ Normal blood specs are just not the norm at crazy high altitudes but it doesn’t stop them climbing. He was fully coherent, fit and doing well. Showing none of the danger signs one can access without blood tests. Either way he did a grand job for the research though.
Adaptation to the climate is a real thing. The people native to Nepal actually can withstand the higher altitudes. Their white blood cell count is much higher than someone that isn't used to that. For instance, I would never be able to climb mount everest, but I've been use to high temperature & humidity my whole life. I actually get sick when temperatures get under 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I refuse to have air conditioning in my house, because cold air seems to always make me sick. My immune system is great, I just can't take the cold.
Funny because where I live the average daily temp is 3 Celsius (37.4f). Mid summer temps being about 15 to 30c and mid winters between -5 to -30c. I go snowboarding November to may and hiking from June to October. I love Canada. In April May I drive from a warm snow free city into a winter wonderland and back it’s so fun 😂
Mountain climbing/cave diving/underwater cave diving is So fascinating but I’d NEVER. Throw me from a plane though in sky diving and I’m a happy lady lol ❤ Good luck on your endeavors for Alzheimer’s ❤
I have not known if I locked the door since I was 10. I think I will be in trouble when I get lod. I am only 67, that means I have a long time before I find out.
I wonder how many other climbers at the base camp would have been willing to share their blood tests for this project? Data would have been nice to add.
When after years of intense training, paying a small fortune, then spending at least a couple of months for acclimation when you finally get there, and when you finally ready after all that, all you have in mind is “summit summit summit”, to say to know when to turn back is close to impossible.
Wow, big man, big money. to show that you are a macho man and number 1, without criteria in the mountains. number one. With oxygen. It's like doing the Tour on a motorcycle
From what I read in the comments, I think ppl have missed the point of the attempt to climb the mountain without supplemental oxygen. The conditions of this mountain do not allow for ordinary humans to attempt summit as they wanted in the name of research. Good attempt in any case and it was a good call on him to abort the mission. Hopefully they'll glean something from the samples they did get.
I fast forwarded a lot to get to actual scenes of him climbing, but they were few and far between. Next thing I know the video was over, like that's it? 😕
Hahaha...Mr. parks In the beginning I thought you will do it with difficulties (obviously) coming when you aim at Mount Everest.....but u disappointed many people who believe more in will power than human physiology.....i thought you were also the guy of strong will power but you proved us wrong.....u are just a guy who work around lab...not a guy who lives in forest....there are many people before you that have achieved it.... wish you best of luck for your future plans
You and your team took the right decision to abandon the summit the Mount Everest. If you want to try again, please don't be selfish and summit with supplemental OXYGEN ONLY.
So basically he was "on" Everest, but didn't climb it. You could tell the whole time he didn't want to be there at all. Didn't even see him climb that much come to think of it. It was only footage of him chilling in tents... Sus af
I would have passed on that blessing, because there is only one true G-d, and He is the Echad, and He control's whether you have the second death. This mountain climbing is interesting, because not everyone can push themselves past what the body can physically do.
Everest is the highest terrestrial peak on the planet however it’s not the most difficult peak of the fourteen 8,000m peaks. It’s also not the most dangerous alpine climbing challenge. At altitudes over 8,000m (the death zone) oxygen levels drop to about 7% compared to a sea level concentration of almost 21%. The air pressure and temperature are also lower. It’s an extreme environment where very little life survives

I agree.
Well done for totally spoiling it as your comment appears at the top as I start to watch it.
Ok, sorry, that is bad. Then who will delete it? Should I or will the Free documentary do that?
Yeah well done Christoph 😂

20,000ft+ above sea level will make your tastebuds almost useless. Bring strong seasoning with you if you want to enjoy any food on the climb!
I can't help but feel that daily infrared sauna use would help in this matter as well
I sympathise with his situation, so fit best prepared. Some clowns just wing it and get up there. You got the research maybe next time.
Could he do it on a course of blood thinners to reduce the risk I wonder?
You made the right choice. Welcome home.
I thought from the thumbnail John Travolta decided to climb Everest lol.
Lol yep he (well both of them) are gorgeous 😍
I wish no one lost there loves..!!!
Today Richard was in my school in Wales city Newport
good video
Would be even better if bckgrnd music was less loud and distracting
Tx
Right on! Great work and research. Hope there's a cure soon. For all of us.
Great video!
I have watched enough mount everest documentaries to know that I will never go there
Mantap bule
You climb the mountain on its terms, not yours. He made the right choice.
Watching here from philippines
He plays Welsh rugby, not American football or boxing, which greatly age the brain, command central.

I almost lost it when I saw he had to take out a piece of tissue on his own leg.
The mountain had its name, still has, long before westerners arrived.

Reply me if u accept challenge..let us know if it is most difficult and dangerous or not??
Your percentages are not totally correct
Did they take all there rubbish with them after the expedition or did they leave it and take the fine like most do..?
Wow....
Mind over matter
If I don’t mind
It don’t matter
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”
Romans 3:23-24
Trainning doesnt help air is so thin in good shape doesnt matter so much its a brutual environment anyway u look it At.Good Luck
if Richard parked on the mount everest, did he had to pay parking ticket?
Nah it was probably included in his all expense paid vacation package. They didn't show him climbing cuz it looks like he just set up a tent and never left the parking lot 😂
With all the gear that people already carrying why not just have a four or five pound oxygen tank like God damn
I was thinking that too. hmm 🤔
Omit taking Lord s name in vain.
@@jackiepowell7513 ..stop trying to control people.
I wonder what caused his blood to be so thick…was he dehydrated?
fit without sickness
So did he over train, and did that cause the the crazy boost in red blood cells
Why not barefoot? The extreme are a different animal. Admirable or a manifestation of compensation for a hole in the psychie?
That music in the background won’t stop, right? I’m out.
Also why was the guy really telling him to descend ? Maybe besides it being a health risk issue he had some jealousy and hate on the guy thats actually trying to achieve something for other then himself.
Stringy blood was weird!
"My" sherpa...
Good for him that he has sleepless nights! That means he's still alive. Made a good decision!
I get nervous watching this...
Lots of money…….!
What is the greatest good we can do with that money …… how do we perceive our lives when it comes to personal challenges……goals….!!
Do we help the needy?
Or do we spend money on an ego, driven sport, climbing up a ice cube of hot ice?
dont test just do...thats the diffrence you make it or ya dont you didnt have the mental stamina
Should have gone straight up and back. He over-climatized!
