Dennis and Nicola Merrigan share their self build journey. They have built a contemporary home to Passivhaus standard.
Amongst the challenges along the way they had to deal with a contractor who went bust, drain a site that flooded and travel down from London on a weekly basis to check on the build's progress.

Simple, beautiful, high quality, low maintenance. That is how true modern architecture ought to be.

Air sealing, super insulation, triple pane windows, solar panels, battery storage and an electric vehicle chargers all need to be considered in future builds. When you build an energy efficient home you save money on utilities and are more comfortable. Good job. Beautiful home. The Climate Crisis is making the world hotter. We all need to do what ever we can to make a difference.

Finally at the end the owner talks about the energy efficiency, which aren't necessarily "passive" solar but by an large there was not nearly enough discussion about the energy saving features of the house. Some good advice - get a good architect and develop a trust relationship - but so much more could have been said.

For the construction period, probably best to place a small office container on the plot, and work from there... This would have saved me a lot of money on a remodel.

I'd love to know how much the build cost on this house, if I could draw my perfect house....this is it

I'm afraid we have no costings for this but you could contact the architects to get an idea - www.conker.cc ^Ben

Its interesting you alluded to time being money. I am in the middle of a somewhat similar build with an excellent contractor. He told me up front that lost days cost money. He was friendly but firm about that. I too visit the site as often as possible so spot decisions can be made.

Shades angled to block the summer suns' direct rays, but still allowing some light to pass through.

That is for solar shading. It's a brise soleil. ^Ben

Hi. Does the passive house standard have any restrictions in terms of maximum living space per person? A builder in the industry told me the standard only allows a certain square meter area or volume of space per person, implying that a relatively large house for, say 2 people, for example wouldn't pass the standard requirements. Are you aware of such requirement?

Is there not a British company that can provide a PASSIVEHAUS without the building hassles? I'd rather use Baufritz or Hansahaus so I could sleep at night.

Yes, there aren't many in the UK yet. But MAKAR is a turnkey operation in Scotland. makar.co.uk/ And you've got great systems like PH15 which are designed to deliver to Passivhaus standard.

*Downsized* to 3 floors ? In what house you lived before? 17 bedrooms?
Anyway, almost zero useful information, nor about house nor building process :(
