@@RiddleAnim Counter Argument: There are multiple versions of expanding-ring-attacks later that you must dodge through to avoid damage. The same trick works for normal attacks and for triggering the "avoid just before getting hit" mechanic. And a single i-frame would be like what 16 milliseconds? So big ball of spoiler-free advice (EDIT: now with paragraphs!): * First of all, you were concerned the game wouldn't keep up the unique dialog in the long run: it absolutely does. I'm over 60 runs in, I've seen every boon most of the gods can give, and done some other spoiler things, but the supply of unheard dialog is still going strong! * No, you don't have to turn on your boons: they are automatically on. That tagging thing is for the purpose of screenshots: if you have a long enough run, it's possible to end up with a LOT of boons over to the side, so you can draw attention to the ones that made the biggest difference (or just the ones you're wanting to display in said screenshot). * You'll have probably already found out by now, but no you don't get to keep Charon's Obol (the coins) when you die. Presumably the psychopomp loots your corpse when he takes you back down the Styx. The only stuff you get to keep are Darkness (purple stuff), Keys, gems, nectar, and certain other items you'll discover later on (it'll be pretty obvious). Your max HP, your obol, and your boons all reset when you die. That trade of obol for darkness is one of the best deals you can get from charon's pools because you're converting a temp resource into a permanent one. * Always talk to NPCs! In the House of Hades not all the npcs are there every time. Explore, check who's around, and talk to all of them: you only get to talk to each person once per run, but as I said there's a seemingly infinite supply of new dialog, so you'll not run out any time soon. * Nectar can be given to the gods during a run, but you can also give it to the various denizens of the House whenever you die, so be sure to save up nectar. Each giftable person will only give you one keepsake (the first time you give them nectar), so I recommend spreading the drink around rather than trying to pick a favorite near the beginning. * Related to talking to NPCs, make special note to talk with Achiles. At some point he'll give you an item that will help you keep track of who you've given nectar to, and how much, amongst other cool things. * PLEASE PET CERBERUS. That is all. * If you see a room reward looks like a stone circle with three gems in it, DEFINITELY go for that one. No spoilers why, but you're not guaranteed those every run and they're totally worth giving up whatever you might have got from the other options. * Sound Design: the game is really good about sound queues. You may have already noticed that boons have a god-themed sound when they show up, as well as when you accept them. They aren't the only things that do that. As you progress in the game, there will be other, optional things that sometimes spawn in rooms: almost all of them will have a unique sound queue when you finish fighting to remind you that there's an extra something in the room to interact with.
Some more spoiler-free advice down here! * The Rarity of boons does not always have a *huge* impact. Some boons are rarity-gated and can only show up on high rarities, but most boons exist in multiple rarities at once, with slightly better stats for the higher rarities. As an example, a common version of a boon might increase your attack damage by 30% while the rare version would grant 35%. * For most weapons, the attack has an interrupt effect, while the special does not. So in most cases, attack should be your primary attack option, as the name implies, while specials are for specific situations. However, with certain Boons or Daedalus Hammer upgrades, this can change completely, and you can even go for special-focused or cast-focused "builds" on a long enough run. * Related to that: since most attacks cause an interrupt, you can go full offense mode against enemies who are unarmored (armor prevents them from being interrupted). The big guy with the club you've been facing is a prime example of an enemy that can be quickly dealt with by spamming attacks. * I'm not sure this is how everyone plays the game, but for melee weapons especially, it helps a lot if you just keep on dashing almost nonstop. It will help you dodge attacks and allow you to dash-strike more often, which is usually a faster or deadlier version of your normal attack. * In most cases, Boons are the best rewards you can choose from multiple doors, since they considerably increase your power for an entire run (and progress the narrative with that god). But it might still be better to go for some Darkness or Keys if you're just short of a particular upgrade! Hope you're sticking with this one, I think it's Supergiant's best game by far, and that's saying something :D
@@treyslider6954 This comment needs to get thousands of likes so that it gets Dan's attention because it is absolutely amazing. It's absolutely everything Dan needs to know about the game going forward. Very well done. I am impressed.
Hello comments section! I'm trying to do a PSA here. For everyone here that didn't play the game yet, I'd like to list spoiler things! These are the same rules of the SGG discord server plus a few others for Dan. Please make this visible! Spoiler things: Anything up to and beyond the final boss. This includes heat, although there's not much to spoil there. Any new NPCs Dan has yet to meet. I know we would all like to talk about our favourite boulder, but let's keep it a surprise. Blood and its uses. Once he unlock all the weapons we can start with the suggestions. That makes certain secret weapons a double spoiler. No talking about flashbacks until they happen. Alright, that's all I can think of. Happy not spoling things!
23:20 "I hope this much character dialogue remains this frequent trought the experience" oh Dan, buckle up! The art, gameplay and music is all incredible, but the story they went all out. In fact I'd suggest you to keep it up even after Halloween, you might enjoy it.
One of Cerberus' heads likes to be pet, it doesn't do anything, but you can (and should) still pet the doggo. I love how they use the iconography for the gods. Athena gets her Aegis, Artemis her bow, Zeus his thunderbolt etc. etc. It's a nice touch
You can tell just by looking which symbol is for which god at a glance! And then the sound design: they each have their own sound-bite-thing for when their boons spawn, which are also iconic enough that you'd probably be able to match them up without having ever played the game as long as you have passing familiarity with the greek pantheon. Supergiant always does awesome, but Hades took the rogue-like genre to the next level IMO.
_And so Dan, the God of Wholesomeness, sets out on his latest Supergiant journey, to die over, and over again._ (I wish my voice was half as deep and sexy as Logan Cunningham's)
The nectar buff doesn't restore XP, it increases your max by 25. So your hp does go up but so does your cap. Use in tandem with Strong Drink or some of the other godly boons to never run out of hp.
It wasn't until I'd skipped that one 3 or 4 times, finally picked it up in run 20-something, that I realized that that was what that boon actually did. So, of course, I had WAY more health by the end of that run that I'd ever gotten close to before. Like, 305 or something. Still got beaten by the final boss, but did way better that run than I thought I would.
I absolutely love the character designs in this game and I think this is by far the best portrayal of the Greek pantheon I have ever seen. On every level: visuals, dialogue, voice acting, characterization; it just nails them as embodiments of their divine portfolios, as members of a really messed up family, and as the assholes of myth.
Totally agree! Although if I'm being nitpicky, I would have liked Ares to be a bit.. 'wilder', since he represents the war in the more enraged sense and less in the tactical sense like Athena (if this makes sense, English ain't my native language).
@@foetieau7379 It does make sense. I feel like you kind of get that in their boons, with Athena's generally being about defence and backstabbing, while Aries' are more aggressive. But I agree that personality-wise Aries comes across as extremely "cool and collected", which doesn't really match up with his domain as well.
Death Counter: 9:40, 20:35 6:50: Charon's not looking so good. Maybe it's time to recruit an apprentice from the mortal world? There's this girl named Stella... 11:30: This villainous portrayal of Hades bothers me less than most. On one hand, he's pretty much the closest thing to a family man on Olympus (competing with Hera and Hephaestus, sometimes known as Boy-Hera)*. On the other hand, what little I've seen makes Hades in, um, Hades seem less like a maniacal villain and more like a workaholic annoyed at his son not wanting to follow in the family business...or live in the family realm, which is where the parallel breaks down. 22:40: The advice is surely comforting, but it seems like it'd be more meaningful coming from an Orphic figure-someone who came back from the underworld. Like Persephone, or Dionysius, or Orpheus. (Or Theseus or Heracles, both of whom also came back from the underworld. At the same time, actually-Heracles kinda had to bail out Thesesus after his buddy Pirithous thought it would be a good idea to kidnap and marry Persephone.†) 34:40: I am _suuper_ disappointed that the shared mythological history between these two isn't even coyly referenced. 4:25: Way I see it, it's _casting_ a spell more literally. Like casting a die, as in throwing it. 7:55: Disarmor? 15:00: The voice acting _is_ quite good. 16:20: I like how unenthused Zagreus is about Ares's appearance. (He was kind of ridiculed in most Greek myths he showed up in, which I'm sure has absolutely nothing to do with Athens writing most of our sources and Sparta being opposed to writing anything down. Did you hear about the time he got stuck in a pot for a whole year before the Olympians bothered to help? And their plan involved Artemis trying to flirt with giants, because that's definitely in her skillset?) 22:22: Cerberus is a rowdy doggo, but a good boy. (Good boys?) By the way, "Cerberus" means "spotted". Hades literally named his giant three-headed snake-furred-or-tailed-the-myths-are-inconsistent death dog _Spot._ 26:45: Immortal comic relief training dummies are the best. 30:00: More Greek mythology fun facts: Poseidon was about as bad with raping women as Zeus, he just has fewer exceptional demigods and an unimportant wife. However, I've heard he had a steady relationship with Nerites, a minor sea god...but this was ancient Greece, so it's worth mentioning that this was the divine equivalent of pederasty with the ancient Greek version of those thousand-year-old vampire girls. 41:55: Hooray, he learned how it's pronounced! *Aphrodite scores points as a mother but loses them as a wife (which, incidentally, is why I joked about Hephaestus being Boy-Hera). †The two of them wanted to marry daughters of Zeus. Theseus picked Helen of Troy. She was _twelve._ If you ever wonder why Hades has so many fangirls (and fanboys) among Greek mythology nerds, it's because the standards are *very* low.
Re 34:42 and the shared history between Zagreus and Dionysus - perhaps the game saves that for later. ;) Let’s just say I didn’t even know there was a shared history until I played this game for several hours. Re 22:40 - most of those heroes end up in the game but not accessible yet, so that’s why this advice comes from who it does. Also, it kinda shows the growth in Achilles since his Illiad days that the game has written for him. There’s a lot this game has, but you have to play through it to get things slowly unlocked.
Yes. _Yes._ *YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.* Gods, this game is so good, and I'm so glad it's been getting the attention it deserves lately. Supergiant was at the top of their game with this one.
Have I played this game a ridiculous amount in the past few months? Yes. Would I still watch Dan experience it for *wayyy* more than five episodes? Hell yes.
You can pet Cerberus and talk to Cerberus and give him treats if you want to Dan. Also if you give him a treat he will give you something good in return, this is true for all characters.
Hades has about 305,000 words of *_spoken_* dialogue. That's bigger than most novels. It's WAY bigger than Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, for instance, which is significantly less than 1/3 the size.
Hey Dan, Hope you enjoy your time with Hades, it's a smashing little game and it's got a lot of personality. Here's a few mechanical tips for you. * Early on prioritize keys. Your gonna want to unlock all the weapons and most of your talent tree. There's some REAL useful stuff further down the talents. *Each god has a "theme". Usually it'll be an attack modifier and a debuff. Some are more useful than others, though they're generally pretty well balanced by giving different %dmg bonuses. You'll develop favourites pretty quickly. *Most enemies will be staggered/mini stunned by your attacks and as such can usually be stunlocked down if there's no other dangers around. Armoured enemies won't be stunned until you get through their armour. Also, damage won't carry through armour into health, so a big hit on an enemy with low armour won't affect their health. *The little skulls on some of the door icons indicate a mini-boss or difficult room. Expect something difficult or normal enemies with a lot of armour sprinkled in. Some of the mini bosses are legitimately rough fights. However the rewards will be better. In the case of currencies you get double, in the case of boons you get upgraded rarities. *When you choose boons from the gods, it makes the chances of that god showing up again later much higher. Most runs end up with boons from 4-5 gods. Bear this in mind when you're given a choice by room choice or in a shop. *Each character in the game (with a couple of exceptions) will give you a keepsake for nectar. Some are more useful than others, but each of them have their place depending on playstyle and weapon used. *For the bow in particular, there is much to be said for using it as a kind of melee weapon. Shotgunning enemies with your special at close range can be a huge damage spike, especially on the larger foes who this is easier to execute on. *Everyone else has said this already but pets. Pets for the guardian of the underworld. Kind regards, Isalan
@@professeurgideere5856 Sneaky bugger and big crystal in Tartarus can be heavy going depending on build/weapon. Power couple is bad news for sure, but Giant Butterfly Ball is just the worst news you can get in my opinion.
@@Isalan88 Yeah, giant butterfly ball is a pain unless you're on some very serious build. Well, going through that easily kinda implies you can hope to get through *REDACTED*.
Oh, I'm so hype for Hades, this game is amazing, almost certainly my GOTY. It's a bit of a long one but I'd love to see this played through all the way.
Oh yeah! I've played this game since last year (It was in early access) and it's a fantastic game. If you haven't bought it yet, consider it buying. If you have already bought it, get the soundtrack. Worth every penny.
One of my favorite games ever!! There's an absurd amount of stuff in this game and the sheer amount of writing staggers me. I cant wait to see how far you get in this playthrough!
Like most rogue-likes, the dash has I-frames, granting immunity to all damage sources (shots, bombs, traps, etc.) It can also allow you to cross gaps instead of having to run around to find a way to the other side.
The Dionysus fountain one also includes the end floor fountains, so if you're regularly getting through lots of floors, and you find it early, it's not bad. If you've just started and you don't tend to get very far it's not especially worth it.
Ahh I just finished the last story event in the game today. So excited to see it from the start. There's some great animation in this. I love the way Hypnos fumbles with his tablet when he wakes up
Okay, this is one of those very rare occasions where I'm going to stop watching a PlayFrame series to play the game myself first. The last time that happened was Hollow Knight!
As someone who has sunk close to 70 hours into this game, I am so hyped for this playthrough. Also, it took me about 30 attempts before my successful escape. We gonna be here for a hot minute.
Was that with or without God Mode, out of curiosity. Because I'm bad at actiony games, so I've got that option on, and just started into run 26 for me. Only made it to the last boss (or what I presume is the last boss) 3 times, and haven't beaten him yet. Made it through what seems to be all the regions, but there are still two spots unmarked in that part of the log, so I'm unsure....
Also, which of the uh.... Mechanics spoilers below boop Which of the passive healing upgrades do you use? Because I've been using the one that just gives guaranteed 3 every room, and I can't decide if that's actually the better one, or if I should be using the Darkness healing one.
Lightning Strike explicitly says "Will replace Tempest Strike." Dan chooses it. "Oh, did that replace an ability?" If only there had been some way of knowing. Also, you walked past Cerberus twice and didn't even TRY to interact with him. You're a monster.
In my (admittedly lacking) experience, the voice performance in SuperGiant games is always fantastic. On an entirely separate note, I love Skelly. So much!
Okay, gameplay things to know: Gods give boons. Boons are upgrades that have a rarity and level. You can have one boon augmenting one type of input, so one for attack, one for special, one for cast, dash, dash-strike and call. Daedalus Hammer: guaranteed to drop twice per run, provided you choose to take them as a chamber option, changes up and buffs how your weapon handles. Run-specific resources: Boons, health, Charon’s Obols and Daedalus Hammers are lost upon death. Permanent resources: Darkness, Gems, Nectars, Keys and boss-specific resources always carry over and are usually spent at the House of Hades. NPC dialogue: NPC’s with exclamation points are ripe for conversation. Talking to them can advance their story-lines and reveal important story elements. Nectar: Used as a gift for NPC’s and Olympian gods. The first time you gift someone a nectar, they will give you a keepsake that you can equip between runs to modify your gameplay. After the first gift, subsequent gifts will further that character’s storyline beyond simple conversations. It’s usually a good idea to spread your nectar about as wide as possible early on, and then choose a few NPC’s or Olympians to favor with nectars until you have fulfilled their story-lines. You can only gift an NPC or Olympian once per run. Boss-specific resources: each boss will drop a permanent resource that has a specific purpose. Those bosses drop the resource one time the first time you defeat them with each weapon. Defeat the first boss with the sword, get their unique resource. Defeat them again with the sword, get a non-unique permanent resource like darkness. If you beat that same boss again with the bow, you’ll get their unique resource again. Tip: only use gems for underworld renovations. Ignore the options for the great hall, bedroom, lounge Etc. until you have purchased all the underworld renovations with gems. The options for the house of Hades are cosmetic for the most part and will not influence the gameplay. That said, they can be fun.
Maybe late but rule of thumb, anything unlocked at the house or rewards from rooms with the blue laurels (keys, gems, nectar, & darkness + some others) are meta currency and persist run to run. Boons, gold, health don't carry over.
In the name of Olympus, Zagreus, I send this message: Each run, you are going to start figuring out the best builds for your character. Often, you choose to start strengthening your attack, and thus, any ways to augment it are the best way to go, even if the special has a better boon (hence why your instinct with Poseidon’s boons is probably the best, even though the special is technically more powerful). I’ve had builds that hinge around powerful casts, powerful attacks, and powerful specials. I’ve even had a couple based around the power of a dash boon which makes it do damage. But the key is often on the first upgrade to take a good boon, and build around that as the RNG allows. The further you get, the more you’ll probably be made to upgrade a couple of attacks, but that’s fine. Also, I love knock back in this game, and Poseidon is the literal god of knock back. ;)
In the name of Olympus, Zagreus, I send this addendum to my message: Don’t forget to dash. In addition, in the mirror, you either can now or will soon get the ability for a second dash. Take this.
Hold on a second! I was expecting Greek figures among Norse mythology, not Mycenaean figures among Greek mythology! (The joke is that Zagreus was a figure in pre-Classical Greece, who later wound up syncretized into Dionysius before he was the cool party god. Overly Sarcastic Productions's video about Dionysius gives the full story, or at least something closer to it.)
In my experience, you should only bother visiting Charon's shop if you've got at least 200 gold - He does sell things for less than that but you'll usually want two of his items and if you can't afford them, it's better to save your money for the next time you see him
This is wonderful. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see the story of this game I will not be capable of player (or, let's be honest, patient enough). Also don't forget to pet Cerberus.
It has a god mode option that lets you resist more and more damage as you go, if that will help. It doesn't erase the difficulty of the game, but it does help immensely. I'd be terrible at this game without it. XD
Regarding dialogue, plenty of people have already mentioned how much there is, but for context, they added new interactions and lines in every major patch, and while they only gave any sense of how many in the final two those two added up to well over 6500 unique lines. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the game's file size was devoted to dialogue, probably by a pretty wide margin too. Just a couple minor tips (more for my sanity than anything, although they'll definitely help if you actually end up reading this): -You didn't lose the Poseidon Boon because it wasn't selected, that doesn't do anything - you lost it because you can only have one boon that upgrades each of your main attack, speacial, cast, and dash at once. It did say "WILL REPLACE: TEMPEST STRIKE" in the description of Lightning Strike, but that's the RUclips effect in action I suppose. -Money should generally be saved for proper shops, as they can get you the benefit of multiple normal rooms without any risk if you can afford it. That's not to say you should ignore the smaller shops, they sell things the main ones don't and can save your bacon in a pinch, just try to keep a good amount available - 250 to 300 is generally safe. -Any Boon or Upgrade (mostly Upgrades) that changes how much damage you do at a specific range will add some indicator of what that range is, you probably didn't notice because Sniper Shot works at such a long range it's practically off the screen. -Boon rarity determines power, not the odds of getting it, so you shouldn't always gravitate towards rare Boons - by all means take it into account, but what the Boon actually does should probably be your first consideration. -Finally, Daedalus Hammers are by far the most potent upgrades available, and you should always go out of your way to get them. I'll spare you a lengthy breakdown of the logistics and resource management to keep in mind regarding that, just remember: Hammer Strong, Always Get.
So, Dan, I know that you want to make friends with all the little cuties in the underworld, especially out in the area where you can attack. They are all like head crabs. Cute, but they want to eat your head. Please keep this in mind.
Dan, if you plan to play this game to it's end, then you have a LONG journey ahead of you. The game doesn't stop after you win the first time, but rather it keeps going, so just a VERY BIG HEADS UP just in case.
Greek Myth Notes: Zagreous, son of Persephone and Hades, has ties to an ancient variant of Bacchus/ Dionysus, who had strong death/ rebirth themes in his early representations.
@@deanospimoniful u mean in the game I'm guessing because there is no mythological precedent for that. Yeah I agree it's gross but like... it's ancient greece... things did get pretty gross sometimes
hahahaha, I picked this up last... Thursday or friday, and thought that I'd love to see you play it, but didn't think you would since I wasn't sure if it had an "ending" strictly speaking, what with being a rogue-like. So glad to see it here. :)
Heeuunngh and welcome to Hades! Charon will be your guide to all the wonderful sights of the underworld. If you look to your left there's a... river....of blood. Maybe we'll skip the tour.
I do but I don't understand why Hades is so often cast in the role of villain. Dude named his big scary three-headed dog 'Spot' [Cerberus > 'spotted one'] If you'd like to see him in a *_VERY_* different role and portrayal than he normally gets, there's a great webcomic called _Punderworld_ by Linda Sejic that focuses on him and Persephone.
Ah Dan starts Hades and STEELSOUL for new series to watch yay. Oh man i forgot how much you have to do at the start, never mind how hard it is without x things leveled. Good Luck enjoy the deaths. I was wanting this game because of the lore/story, but was thinking that it wouldn't be fun because I'm not a fan of rougelikes because I'm very bad at them. Thanks for changing my mind and for showing that it has an 'easy mode'
normally i love to give tips on each of your play throughs early on, but this game does a pretty good job of getting you to speed at the rate you need time for cool flashy lovely game
Congrats, Orpheus! Though, trivial aside-the conflation of Hades (the place) with Hell can all be traced to the ancient Roman equivalent of a 4kids dub. I don't remember if someone translated "Sheol" to "Hades" or vise versa, but it was an attempt at translating a rough idea of the place without actually explaining anything relevant.
HEY! I just got back into this after they left early access and got a win literally before opening youtube! Great game, though not recommended for a thorough Let's Play. You've got tons on your plate as-is. TIPS! Smash enemies against walls and pillars for extra damage. If you can step on it, it's a trap. Cast as soon as possible, as much as possible. Give nectars to Skelly, Cerberus, Achilles and Nyx ASAP. For Gods, Artemis, Dionysus and Aphrodite are good candidates for nectar as well.
You are probably getting so many comments about this but it cant be overstated enough. Go straight for Death Defiancies for the most part when picking Darkness upgrades. It'll help so much with survivablity with those many retries.
I was thinking this felt a lot like Transistor. No surprise if Supergiant is behind it. Also didn't think about it til now, but Bastion has much the same mechanical feel to it as well. Guess Supergiant has a trademark style lol
I am really excited to have you play this game. I don't know if you have the slots to play this all the way to the credits, but ever since I started playing I've wanted to hear your commentary about it.

I have around 150 escape attempts and I can confirm there's still dialog to hear.
Most of it is about spoiler, but still.
All great, useful information but, for heaven's sake:
Paragraph breaks
Use them!!
@@rubiconcinematics2910 Sorry. Is that better?
@@treyslider6954 This comment needs to get thousands of likes so that it gets Dan's attention because it is absolutely amazing. It's absolutely everything Dan needs to know about the game going forward. Very well done. I am impressed.
Hello comments section! I'm trying to do a PSA here.
For everyone here that didn't play the game yet, I'd like to list spoiler things! These are the same rules of the SGG discord server plus a few others for Dan. Please make this visible!
Spoiler things:
Anything up to and beyond the final boss.
I didn’t think there was going to be so much dialogue to be honest, bought the game 2 months and only after 115 hours am I finding repeated lines
Dan: The patreon's voted for this.
Me: Dan didn't really want to leave Kratos so he found a different Greek God to play.
a less angry one
Demigod, but yes.
And there’s still plenty of a god-father (heheh) calling their son “BOY” in this one!
@@dragonsswarm1987 no, full god. Both his parents are dieties. Hades, the father, and his mother...
@@Rognik yes, his mother, Nyx.
I'm so happy you're playing this! It's made with so much love.
It kinda does a thing? Nothing combat relevant but if you want to max your affinity with Cerberus you have to pet him a bunch
It may not be spooky but it certainly encourages dressing up with how stylish everyone looks.
_And so Dan, the God of Wholesomeness, sets out on his latest Supergiant journey, to die over, and over again._
(I wish my voice was half as deep and sexy as Logan Cunningham's)
Don't we all?
The nectar buff doesn't restore XP, it increases your max by 25. So your hp does go up but so does your cap. Use in tandem with Strong Drink or some of the other godly boons to never run out of hp.
It wasn't until I'd skipped that one 3 or 4 times, finally picked it up in run 20-something, that I realized that that was what that boon actually did. So, of course, I had WAY more health by the end of that run that I'd ever gotten close to before. Like, 305 or something. Still got beaten by the final boss, but did way better that run than I thought I would.
*hp
I absolutely love the character designs in this game and I think this is by far the best portrayal of the Greek pantheon I have ever seen. On every level: visuals, dialogue, voice acting, characterization; it just nails them as embodiments of their divine portfolios, as members of a really messed up family, and as the assholes of myth.
Absolutely. I know dan hasn't come across this yet, but I love the Olympian dialogs from the *"One of them's going to be upset"* rooms...
Death Counter: 9:40, 20:35
6:50: Charon's not looking so good.
At the same time, actually-Heracles kinda had to bail out Thesesus after his buddy Pirithous thought it would be a good idea to kidnap and marry Persephone.†)
34:40: I am _suuper_ disappointed that the shared mythological history between these two isn't even coyly referenced.
And their plan involved Artemis trying to flirt with giants, because that's definitely in her skillset?)
22:22: Cerberus is a rowdy doggo, but a good boy. (Good boys?)
By the way, "Cerberus" means "spotted". Hades literally named his giant three-headed snake-furred-or-tailed-the-myths-are-inconsistent death dog _Spot._
26:45: Immortal comic relief training dummies are the best.
On Dionysus/Zag, like others have said, there is a lot of unique dialog in this game... 😉🤫
Yes. _Yes._ *YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.*
Gods, this game is so good, and I'm so glad it's been getting the attention it deserves lately. Supergiant was at the top of their game with this one.
Dan: "I'm doing well---"
Game: "HUBRIS"
Please please please give this a full series and not just a week.
Ah, yes, casting spells, then running to pick them up.
The old "catch" and fetch.
Have I played this game a ridiculous amount in the past few months? Yes. Would I still watch Dan experience it for *wayyy* more than five episodes? Hell yes.
And besides, is it even really the PlayFrame experience if you're not watching it thinking "Dan! Dash more!"
I'm so happy to get to watch Dan experience this. This has rapidly shot up into my top 10 games list. I love it so much
Hey Dan,
Hope you enjoy your time with Hades, it's a smashing little game and it's got a lot of personality.
Kind regards,
Isalan
"legitimately rough fights" *shudders in power couple*
@@professeurgideere5856 Sneaky bugger and big crystal in Tartarus can be heavy going depending on build/weapon. Power couple is bad news for sure, but Giant Butterfly Ball is just the worst news you can get in my opinion.
@@Isalan88 Yeah, giant butterfly ball is a pain unless you're on some very serious build. Well, going through that easily kinda implies you can hope to get through *REDACTED*.
9:55 "Well we had a good run" Oh Dan...I believe in you
My wife and I were literally shouting at the screen for him to pet Cerberus.
Oh, I'm so hype for Hades, this game is amazing, almost certainly my GOTY. It's a bit of a long one but I'd love to see this played through all the way.
Do what you want in this game, Dan, but there is one thing I ask of you: pet the dog.
Oh yeah!
I've played this game since last year (It was in early access) and it's a fantastic game. If you haven't bought it yet, consider it buying.
If you have already bought it, get the soundtrack. Worth every penny.
Dan, I'm 80 hours in and I'm still getting new dialogue and story beats. This game is incredible!
And also physically through your bed
The Dionysus fountain one also includes the end floor fountains, so if you're regularly getting through lots of floors, and you find it early, it's not bad.
If you've just started and you don't tend to get very far it's not especially worth it.
Thank you for giving me Hades content to satisfy my bottomless thirst for half the cast.
Ahh I just finished the last story event in the game today. So excited to see it from the start. There's some great animation in this. I love the way Hypnos fumbles with his tablet when he wakes up
I am over 100 runs and the dialogue does indeed keeps this good Dan, you will have a wonderful time with this game and I cannot wait to see it all
Okay, this is one of those very rare occasions where I'm going to stop watching a PlayFrame series to play the game myself first. The last time that happened was Hollow Knight!
OH BY ZEUS YES!!!
Just when I was feeling down about the GoW hiatus, this comes out :D
Mechanics spoilers below

Which of the passive healing upgrades do you use? Because I've been using the one that just gives guaranteed 3 every room, and I can't decide if that's actually the better one, or if I should be using the Darkness healing one.
Hey Dan glad you're enjoying it so far, focus on upgrading death defiance, dash and then your cast. They make the game feel much more fun and fluid
Lightning Strike explicitly says "Will replace Tempest Strike." Dan chooses it. "Oh, did that replace an ability?" If only there had been some way of knowing.
Also, you walked past Cerberus twice and didn't even TRY to interact with him. You're a monster.
Couldn't agree more, on all points.
In my (admittedly lacking) experience, the voice performance in SuperGiant games is always fantastic.
On an entirely separate note, I love Skelly. So much!
Also, in God of War you’re the father of the Boi, in Hades, the God of Underworld, YOU’RE the Boi
Hypnos: _speaks_
Me: Yakko?
Okay, gameplay things to know:
Gods give boons.
Pure is the life I have led, since I became a Herdsman for Nocturnal Zagreus.
This looks really neat! I'm glad to see you enjoying it!^_^
I'm late but it sounds like hades is speaking from experience.
Maybe late but rule of thumb, anything unlocked at the house or rewards from rooms with the blue laurels (keys, gems, nectar, & darkness + some others) are meta currency and persist run to run. Boons, gold, health don't carry over.
Dan, you really know how to get yourself into some amazing games don't you?
Oh the music, the combat, the characters. It's all oh so good!
Really love the character portraits it's so good😍😍😍
I looooove seeing this. Definitely my game of the year 2020.
I was hoping you'd play this! So excited for this let's play!
In the name of Olympus, Zagreus, I send this message:
Each run, you are going to start figuring out the best builds for your character.
Also, I love knock back in this game, and Poseidon is the literal god of knock back. ;)
In the name of Olympus, Zagreus, I send this addendum to my message:
Don’t forget to dash. In addition, in the mirror, you either can now or will soon get the ability for a second dash. Take this.
Dan: *Confuses the not glowing obviously-a-heart with the glow of the godly symbols*
No spoilers for how but this gets acknowledged later on.
@@violetblight69 Neat!
There's a joke in the game about Zagreus and Dionysius being the same person.
Just a couple minor tips (more for my sanity than anything, although they'll definitely help if you actually end up reading this):
-You didn't lose the Poseidon Boon because it wasn't selected, that doesn't do anything - you lost it because you can only have one boon that upgrades each of your main attack, speacial, cast, and dash at once.
I don't like rogue games but this has me intrigued.
I think you sold me on this.
So, Dan, I know that you want to make friends with all the little cuties in the underworld, especially out in the area where you can attack. They are all like head crabs. Cute, but they want to eat your head. Please keep this in mind.
Ah yes! Just finished the story for this one myself. An excellent companion piece to the chill SpiritFarer! Hope you've got enough Obols for Charon!
YES! So excited you are playing this. Also I know you won't be able to act on this for a while (because batch filming) but PET THE DOG YOU MONSTER.
@39:50
You do not need to manually turn on the boons. Those are just to pin up the description of the boon, as you later assume.
So glad you are playing this!! Currently my console is out of commission so I’m hyped to see it!!
Dan, if you plan to play this game to it's end, then you have a LONG journey ahead of you. The game doesn't stop after you win the first time, but rather it keeps going, so just a VERY BIG HEADS UP just in case.
Finally I play a game on my list before you do! I’m excited to see you experience this amazing game!
Honestly I did expect this for the Halloween weeks at all! A pleasant surprise, I'm loving this game!!!!
Greek Myth Notes: Zagreous, son of Persephone and Hades, has ties to an ancient variant of Bacchus/ Dionysus, who had strong death/ rebirth themes in his early representations.
The most unrealistic thing about this game is clearly that Achilles would talk to such a beautiful boy without hitting on him
Achilles is kind of a surrogate father to Zagreus, so gross.
@@deanospimoniful u mean in the game I'm guessing because there is no mythological precedent for that. Yeah I agree it's gross but like... it's ancient greece... things did get pretty gross sometimes
@@caca95cb As evidence of widespread gross, one need only look to Zeus and all the... Everything he always did.
Except that Achilles heart already belongs to another at this point. And the game gets to that. He’s gone and committed,
Perhaps there's another fellow that Achilles has is heart fixed on... 🤫
hahahaha, I picked this up last...
Dude named his big scary three-headed dog 'Spot'
[Cerberus > 'spotted one']
If you'd like to see him in a *_VERY_* different role and portrayal than he normally gets, there's a great webcomic called _Punderworld_ by Linda Sejic that focuses on him and Persephone.
Ah Dan starts Hades and STEELSOUL for new series to watch yay. Oh man i forgot how much you have to do at the start, never mind how hard it is without x things leveled. Good Luck enjoy the deaths. Please read everyone on the mirror, check the table by it and pet the pup! Boons are always on... please READ what skills/stuff do. But watching him with Bow after sword... i can see why people like the it, helps new players progress easily.
Dan Playing Hades! Hecc yes,

love seeing folks play it for the first time :§
This game is so good
interesting that you should note the voice work, zagreus' voice actor is actually the singer when Orpheus is singing. A lot of range from him.

Dan, you lucky you, you! Hades is _phenomenal!_ Have fun!
I was wanting this game because of the lore/story, but was thinking that it wouldn't be fun because I'm not a fan of rougelikes because I'm very bad at them. Thanks for changing my mind and for showing that it has an 'easy mode'

He thinks he's going to get through much of Hades in one week. The poor, poor fool.
Just got out of Hell first time today, Dan is about to start one Hell of a ride.
Dan, work of advice - pet the doge. You will get something useful from him eventually if you give him a gift too.

That was a really -nice- spot to end the episode.
Did- did Dan set his difficult to hard? On accident?
Ooh, was wondering when Dan would get to this one. I bet he's going to make my runs look like nothing.
