  • In this video I'm going to show you how to replace a cowl panel on a 1971 Chevy C-10 truck. If you are doing a restoration on your classic Chevy truck and want to know whats involved in removing a cowl panel you are at the right place. I will show you the tools needed and a step by step process of the disassembly.
    These techniques can also be used on Chevrolet C10, C20, C30 and GMC trucks, Blazer and Jimmy 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972.
    Here are the links to the tools I used in this video
    Adapter 5/16 - amzn.to/2GZ5Wrb
    Spot weld cutter - amzn.to/2NMUr6M

There is a C-10 windshield video in RUclipsland that is 30 minutes long, its one angle from the back of the truck and the guy is pulling out the front glass... why is that video 30 min if it takes only a couple of minutes to remove the glass? “Using my nifty little boom”. Lol I’m already past this stage on the C10 I’m restoring. But it’s interesting to watch how others do things. Your rust isn’t bad at all compared to mine. This C10 sat uncovered in the rain for over 25 years. Good thing it’s a Texas truck.

Actually had a 1967 Malibu for a while but end up selling it back to the original owner (Rich that gave me the 305 for the Cursemaro) because I knew I wasn't going to be able to put it on the road anytime soon. It was just a shell but it was from Cali, 98% rust free! One of my biggest regrets, letting that car go.

    The thing I liked most about the chevies was that 85% of them ever made are still on the road... the other 15% made it home. I bought a 69 and a 72 and both were rust buckets in five years and I even had paint done on both but I didn't do it myself so my bad! I drove a second hand 76 highboy ford 3/4 and built it to f 350 specks and I did body and paint only once. It stayed nice and when the wife sold it on me while I was at work, That was close to a divorce. Did ten years later and she cleaned the closet so I moved to Alaska and been here since 84. Never left, never needed to. Back then chevy made the best ride and dodge made the best steering but ford seemed to have the best body. My 95 f350 4x4 dually quad cab with five speed has over six hundred thousand on the clock and it looks new yet . I changed the valve cover gaskets (diesel wiring) and thats it but I do use synthetic oil and change the oil in the hvhp pump on every oil change (amsoil) and have since new, same with my 5.0 explorer. Same year but different color and over three on the clock. I don't like the new ford diesels nor the aluminum idea they try selling. I'm 72 so I change tires for winter or summer and thats it. I just got too damn old to cut the mustard and I miss my shop and my dog

      Nice! Yeah my truck was a disaster when I got it. The guy before me fixed the parking brake with a bike lock cable that was too long. He knotted it into a softball sized knot to shorten it, and it's still didn't work right. Oh how about fixing the rockers with home hvac piping and a 1/4" of bondo... smh!

    Not that I'm advocating aftermarket over factory but I was just curious, do they reproduce that cowl panel? Thought I'd ask since one can damn near build a whole truck out of a catalog now days. And I've got more projects than I can handle. 67 Cutlass, 66 Special, and 80 Monte for starters

    • @BustedClassicGarage
      @BustedClassicGarage  5 лет назад +1

      Nice, the first car I ever did any kind of resto work was on was my buddies 1970 Cutlass Supreme. The price is what got me, the junkyard panel cost me $60 and a 12 pack of Busch vs ordering it from LMC for $300 and paying the $125 freight charge. You know things can add up pretty quickly with these projects, wherever I can save money to put into something more useful, I do.

    I had a comment previously, and you helped. One more… I am cutting mine out and have all the spots along the perimeter cut and loose, but I’m being held down on both ends by something. I see in your video that the blower area appears to have other spots to remove. What is on the driver’s side? I see the fender bolt brace that you spot cut out, but it’s laying loose on the inner cowl later. I was thinking it only was attached to the upper cowl and didn’t need spot cut (maybe not).

    • @BustedClassicGarage
      @BustedClassicGarage  9 месяцев назад +1

      In the video where I pull off the cowl that was after all of it was cut out. I threw it back on for that shot. That brace is welded to the side and front of the outer cowl and it is also welded to the inner. Do you have instagram or facebook? I can you send some pics of where the spot welds are.

      Are you talking about the bottom section of the cowl, where that drain hole is. If that's the piece you're talking about as far as I know they do not make them and you would have to fabricate something or find a donor vehicle for those pieces. If you're talking about the footwell, that gets welded to the a-pillar and the floor, LMC has those for pretty cheap.

      It just depends on the level of restoration you're doing. Most guys would shoot rust encapsulator in there and call it a day. I thought about doing just that but with the amount of rust that I knew the truck had I figured that was going to be a pretty rough area. I needed to fix the cowl and I figured this would be easier then trying to patch a bunch of spots on it including a long section of the cowl lip.
