I am frugal but by no means a minimalist. I keep what I have and use it until it falls apart. I do invest in and use good computers, an iPhone and iPad but don't have to have the latest and greatest. The car was new with all the good features, but I will keep it 20 years. Frankly most of the stuff we purchase today is junk compared to the quality from last century. I cook with cast iron Griswold skillets, griddles, and a Dutch oven that were made in the 1920s and are the best non stick pans. My pots are Revereware that my grandmother purchased in the 1930s. I purchased an Electrolux Super J vacuum in 1976 and still use it. My Amana stove is 39 years old and works just fine. My electric percolator is from Corning and was a wedding gift in 1967. It still makes the best coffee. All of my furniture is from the 1920s-1950s and belonged to my grandparents and parents. Personally I think it is foolish to get rid of perfectly good items that we could be using just because there is supposed to be a limit on what we own.

Unfortunately items aren’t built to last now. They aren’t easily mended, technology needs upgrading which is out of our control (no matter how we look after it) and companies make sure it’s a throw away society. Let’s face it - they don’t make things like they use too 😢

@@Bessie66 That is exactly right. That is why I purchased those Griswold skillets at antique stores and on eBay. I see my Super J vacuum for sale there too. Someone is asking $350 for it.( I paid less than that for it new). When I purchase a new large appliance I make sure that it has a good warranty and check reviews. I recently bought a water heater for $750 from Home Depot that has a 10 yr. warranty. My neighbor installed it for $100. My new AC and furnace that I purchased this summer has a full parts and labor warranty for 12 years. I also have purchased an extended 2 year warranty that paid off 3 times. The last time it replaced a 2 year old washing machine that they wouldn't repair.

I asked her how many people had also done the same and tried them on before her then not bought them. It hadn’t even occurred to her that the clothes I was trying on would be clean while the ‘new’ ones she was might not be. She’s converted.😂👍

I love this! A lot of people make the misconception of believing minimalism is "depriving yourself", but it's the opposite. You're treating yourself, just having less of treating yourself, rather than more of something you're indifferent to or actually dislike.

    • @greenkitty82
      @greenkitty82 4 месяца назад

Oh yes I agree and I apply this principle absolutely. The only thing I find is that even if something is good quality and lasts a long time, it doesn't mean that that person will be satisfied with it long term as their ego will want them to replace it. We can have an expensive good quality TV that lasts 30 years but doesn't always mean that person will be satisfied with it for that long so unless they can curb that dissatisfaction they will continue to keep spending.

Having too much requires constant cleaning and management of things. I’m not a minimalist but want adequate space for the items I own and a proper place for each item. It makes life SO MUCH BETTER. Clutter will kill you… it kills your physical health, mental health, emotional health, spiritual health and financial health.

the most wonderful thing about minimalism is sitting outside, and not having to scurry to cook, clean, organize, put back, etc.
It gives you space to BREATHE and to simply, well, be...for a few minutes or more.
For me, the stress level went DOWN by orders of magnitude.
Sadly, this also means that i did live with others, and now it is just me and my dog...flip side, they wree not minimalist and i don't have to clean up after them CONSTANTLY.
So for me, it also helps with my PTSD dignosis as well, and moving to a remote place (again) is a HUGE step to my physical and mental health.
    Thanks Joshua!

Agree. My dad trained me to appreciate quality, to value the well-made. Junky things seem to give off stressful vibes! A related concept is that using half of something will make it last twice as long. I realize that this idea falls under the category of frugality, which you were here differentiating, but I do find it an auxiliary principle. My grandmother would chew a half of a stick of gum, saving the other half for another day.

Yes, I agree with your sentiments. I buy either good quality items new or second hand. I needed a few lightweight summer tips for holidays, I bought 3 from a charity shop for £3 each. One was pure silk, one was from Paris and is wonderful, one is just the most useful multi purpose garment ever. I think I took longer looking at these items in the charity shop than I would have if buying online, weighing up each one for its value to me and my needs. Satisfaction ✅. Thank you for your great videos.

In the past, when I was working (now retired), I typically bought quality items. They last longer, the clothes I chose were more timeless, cookware is more durable, etc. My challenge is that I have more than I need at this point in my life even after downsizing a few times.
I’m thinking I may just have to wear out some of these items so I can more easily part with them.

I saw your video pop up on the Google news page and I was just sitting here almost in tears thinking about all of the things I need to organize and either sell or give away in my home. My problems started when I was married and my husband moved in with my mother and me. He had his own things that we had to incorporate into the house and even though he got rid of a lot of things but still added to the total amount. Then my brother moved in after my husband died because he was in a tough spot and had lost his home brought all of his things that are now in my garage. He's too busy with his job to do anything about it and I'm just one person dealing with things that belong to four people! The problem is I don't want to give everything away! We have at least a few things that are worth a little bit of money but it gets kind of complicated selling things and I'm not very good at it, so that's why I'm wanting to cry right now. I don't even know where to start 😭

Yes. I only can use one pair of trail sandals as I’ve had ahip replacement but one leg is longer than the other now, so one sandal has a wedge glued to the inside of the heel to give the unoperated leg more height. I used these sandals during winter after discarding the slip on shoes without height adjustment. The other shoes I own are useless now - no more high heels, only a pair of thongs for after the shower to walk a very short distance. Maybe I can insert some woollen insert into one sheepskin pair of boots for next winter. It’s surprising how little we need. People are using our discards but inferior quality clothing manufacturing needs to be stopped as much of it donated ends up in waste piles in third world countries. If all clothing was made of quality natural materials it would eventually biodegrade without polluting the land & waterways & give those in third world countries decent breathable clothing to wear. I’ve found I only need two or three sets of clothing each season, then pack them away & bring out the next season’s clothing that was packed away. I was going to donate my mother’s trench coat & buy myself a new one. I looked at the price if new ones - AUD$800! So keeping the years old trench coat which is good quality to wear for myself. Bring back quality fashion made from wool, cotton, hemp, - all natural fibres which can biodegrade to feed our soils. Reduce the harmful dyes & bring back weaving & embroidery & more people growing things like our ancestors did. We are too far removed from the natural world & survival & creative skills are not taught or have been forgotten. Thanks for bringing some sense back into the world. Volunteering in a charity shop you can look for qualty clothing if you can’t afford new. Pre-loved clothing is fun when it’s not made from mass produced synthetic material.

It is still necessary to spend money to replace what you discard, if decluttering leaves you with too few clothes. We can't all do it without spending money.

I am not advocating for people to walk around town without enough clothes on. Thanks for the clarification :)

Unfortunately, yes, this is true. But I don’t think this is “nowadays.” This was already the case when I was in high school over 40 years ago, lol.

Out of the mouth of babes. So just to think that this started with your neighbor's Little girl making that statement. So that's why I said out of the mouth of babes

Oh, that's wonderful! I hate to ruin the mental picture in your mind of this powerful story, but my neighbor's daughter was well-grown, out of the house, and on her own by the time my neighbor told me this story. So she wasn't a little girl telling her mom she didn't own so much stuff, she was off on her own reporting back to her mom and the new life she had found. Same story-just a little different mental picture for you.
