Totally disagree. Scatting is an expression of meaning. Have ever listened to Betty Carter, Al Jarreau, or Brazilian vocalist? Hopefully, your musical awareness was broadened by Dianne Reeves’ performance.
In every style of music - not only jazz - there are wordless vocal parts. Even in speech, we have sounds that are not words. It’s a good thing that Dianne is one of the expert students of music and can bring elements of gospel, classical, reggae, Brazilian music, and jazz to bear, including both lyrics and sounds. (And of course that doesn’t exhaust her musical palette). I’m going to trust Clark Terry, Sweets Edison, Joe Williams , Kenny Barron, Wynton Marsalis, and all of the other jazz greats who have called on Dianne to sing and scat.
