- Part 22 of my playthrough of GTA 4. On this part Francis orders Niko to kill his brother Derrick but Niko may have 2nd thoughts.

The mission where you go to Francis' funeral is strange so there are cops inside the church but after you leave the church and get ambushed no cops are anywhere in sight.

As much as I hate Francis, Niko would probably take out Derrick on account of him being a known rat.
Derrick is a rat, but you can handle that by making sure you never tell him anything you don't want being shared. Francis was actively blackmailing Niko and made it a point to remind him he had him by the balls. I'd say Francis was the bigger threat by far.
Derrick ends up dead by 2013 as Packie says so if you have him as a gunman for the pale to bay heist. But that could be from sickness. Then again Niko says no one likes a rat to Anthony if he kills him any way other than his life support sooooooo... you are probably right
I let Francis live aswell because he gives you the police perk, and besides he's better off financially starting off a career and having a family that wont go down a path of crime like his brothers (the Mcreary name lives on), so yeah there's always that to think about folks unlike Derrick who is too far gone to start anew. We do him a favor by ending his misery.

I always kill Francis, for one simple reason: he asked first.
When Derrick tells you to kill Francis, it's because he knows Francis is already on the move to kill him, he's merely trying to defend himself, it's sad that it's his brother but it's self defense.
Francis actively went out of his way to demand you to kill his own brother bc of a fucking rank, if he didn't ask Niko to kill Derrick, Derrick would have never asked Niko to kill Francis.
Also, in GTA V, Packie confirms that Derrick dies anyway between 2008 and 2013, so I choose to let him live the short time he's got left.

I always thought it was cool how GTA 4 had various choices to make, it helps the player feel like what they do in the game matters. There's a huge choice coming up involving Dimitri, can't wait to watch that one.

In GTA 5 too we had a lot of choices like in the final mission and the best one was the choice between heist approaches which was never done before in so much detail in any GTA game.
I completed this game 10 times but i love that he explains everything in detail that i still learn more things 12 years after the game released.
I picked Derrick because he betrayed everyone around him. Remember when he sent Niko after Sligo? He told Niko to kill everyone who was with Sligo, maybe trying to tie loose ends when there were none. The heroin just messed up his brain, making him a paranoid monster.

While Francis is a terrible person, if not worse cause he’s in law enforcement, Derrick is beyond saving. If anything it’s mercy. He’s not only a betraying snake but an addict who’ll probably rat out his family for drugs. He’s possibly the reason Gerry got pinched. Plus the mom suffering enough with bad sons might as well keep the one she considers good alive for her sake. Considering Kate dies, if you choose the revenge ending that is, she’ll have nobody to turn to. Francis is the only kid besides Kate she considers good. Idk that’s just my 2 cents on this choice mission

Aren't the diamonds originally mr. bulgarin's that got stolen and got blend in a cake to disguise them by a chef that later got found as only a decapitated head in the cake box when you play as luis which bulgarin thought was part of the theft of his diamonds hence why he is on the hunt for anyone responsible for it as he wants them back again?
A scenario where we pity the kidnappers.
Can ring Francis well your doing it and get extra money for killing Derrick.
If you kill Derrick, Franicis acts it out with a cutscene and can ring him if got cops up to 3 stars.
If you kill Francis, Derrick walks off and then whenever you call his phone is off.
Yet another reason as to why this video is so biased and wrong.

He betrayed his long friend who was in prison also. I felt horrible for him. First, Derrick sold him to the police, and then, he made us un-alive him while the dude was just shouting: I want to live... I spent so many years in prison....

I imagine the main reason you don't do that in GTA V is because of the weapon customization. In the old 3D games all guns and ammo were just floating guns. So they probably thought it would be cool to add a drop animation since, having a gun symbolize ammo on the ground you could get away with that little detail. Make it like Niko drops an empty gun and just picks up a new one later. With gun customization sure it would look cool to drop the gun but, it wouldn't make sense that every enemy just happened to drop the same custom gun as you. IMO it's a trade off I'm ok with.
Fun fact: In San Andreas and Vice City (and i think GTA 3 too), the protagonist doesn't throw away the empty gun, they hold onto it, but it doesn't show in the weapons slot, but it appears as soon as you pick up weapons of the same kind (like AK47 ammo for M4) which was dropped by NPCs (it doesn't work with weapons scattered around the map). Nothing big, but just felt like mentioning it here, i wish Niko did the same.
Derrick’s a smack head and a traitor to his cause, but at least he’s willing to repent his mistakes and work alongside you in a bank robbery.

This is enough teach to kids that money is totally useless sometimes either in reality or in IV.
Who knows? Maybe Francis will stop doing bad things because his problems are now over and no one's gonna rat him out. After you kill Derrick, Francis won't ask you to do his dirty work. So, probably Francis will do his duty respectfully like a cop should. So, no one knows.
I always choose Derick cause one, reward, but 2 for moral, Derick can literally snitch on niko any time at least with Francis , he make sure ur record are not given to police, sure he corrupted , but Derick have ruined some people life's like Aiden, I hate snitches more than corrupted officers ( depend what they do )

I always choose to knock off Francis when playing this mission because although both Derrick and Francis have committed dishonorable acts, Francis is a threat to Niko's life and freedom by being a corrupt law enforcement official and having all that dirt on Niko. Francis would have eventually turned on Niko whenever he felt that Niko had too much dirt on him. He would have either used the information he has to put Niko in prison, got Niko deported, or hired another assassin to knock him off like his other threats.

When I first played this game and many times after well up until recently, I agreed 100% to kill Francis. He's a scumbag and a weasel. My initial thought is to take his ass out. But this time as of 5 minutes ago, I was playing and I realized sumthin'. The last mission that Niko did for Derrick, I kinda felt like Niko felt so bad for him and it came to me. Morality wise, I decided to kill Derrick not to spare Francis. But because Derrick was an addict and showed no signs of cleaning up any time soon. In a way, I felt like I saved him from himself. And yes I'm speaking from the experience of an ex drug addict myself. Some people are too far gone to come back. Derrick needed to be put outta his misery. At least that's how I look at it. So yeah RIP Derrick.

I think that we already got the confirmation that Niko killed Derrick. Sure, you can say "well we don't know how Derrick died, he could've OD'd, Packie doesn't say" but this isn't real life, this is a work of fictional history. If GTA IV says "Niko can kill Derrick" and GTA V says "Derrick is dead" we have no reason to assume he died in any other way. It's kinda like Chekhov's Gun. Rockstar's writing team was still pretty competent at the time, after all
I mostly spared Francis. He might have threatened Niko, but he was panicking. Also, Francis never backstabbed Niko, while Darrick is known for being a rat and an unstable drug-addict. He is not honest about who he is, he still denies it that he was the one that ratted his friends out. Oh, and Francis has the ability to get the cops off you if you call him during a pursuit [Edit: Yeah, you called it, but I still stand by it, that Francis was the lesser of two evil]

and francis gives you 10k, if you call him from the roof he will be scared and offer to double the amount to 20k.

Francis would freak if Niko ever gets arrested for the sole fact that Niko got dirt on him and could have him implicated. It's better to just roll along with Francis because Derrick could just throw you under the bus.
Funny enough given my namesake, I always picked Derrick. Despite the fact that he was a rat and probably could rat you out anytime, it felt like more of a mercy killing than anything.

Simply because Derrick was suffering from major PTSD, betrayal from his former soldiers for the cause and he had his last moments
The satisfying part was the aftermath phone call where Niko has _all_ the dirt on Francis and not the other way round...
Plus you can call him removing any wanted levels as well as Kiki, so having two guaranteed forms of Law Enforcement removal is better than one...
Killing Francis just makes the aftermath story not worth using plus phoning Francis to bump the price is a nice touch for the choice
and its cannon to the gta lore, in gta 5 packie mentions he lost a brother to murder named derrick back in liberty city.

Funny fact about the car Bernie gives. It's actually bugged to listen to conversations. You actually bug the car as Johnny in TLaD but I think you can even call the number in IV to listen to the conversations

You can't call the number in IV since that's a part of TLaD, but after a certain point when you call you'll stop hearing Bernie/Florian sing and start hearing Niko escaping the cops, which means he got the car as a gift.

I know that Derrick is addict and crap but nothing boils my blood more than a crooked cop. Derrick is someone who needs proper but firm help.
Derrick never took an oath to protect and serve, he isn't being paid by taxpayers and being trusted to do the right thing. Derrick is problematic yes but he in the end he has no power, he doesn't have a reputation built on the bodies of others. Sure he snitches on other criminals but that's just it *other criminals*.
Would Francis really be put away if he tries to put Niko? Real world experiences have told me no, The Thin Blue Line is a real thing, being in the police force is like being in the boys club you watch out for each other and always defend your cop brethren. Not EVERY officer is like that but many and with the corruption Francis has he could easily just be put on "Administration leave" a code word for paid vacation, resign, then just become a cop elsewhere. I have no reason to trust Francis or Derrick but one never made a oath to his city and technically country to protect and serve only to do criminal acts behind the scenes.
Francis is useful unlike Derrick.

Hey Pro, love your playthrough series. You actually make me want to play the game again after all of this time. I like how you explained everything that's going on to the story, so i actually understand it because back then, i don't really understand the storyline.
I know your channel because of your GTA Online tutorial, but i'm glad you decided to play old GTA games because i really enjoyed it and i find it entertaining. Keep up the good work, looking forward for the next episode!
I chose Derrick always because 1) he's a miserable junkie and a (former) rat. 2) He has much more reason to rat out Niko if threatened to be arrested and Francis has much less chance to be arrested as the commisioner. 3) Francis is not known to snitch, but he couldn't snitch on Niko since he knows too much like Gerald and possibly Packie and Kate.

I always kill Derrick because he is a snich. He betray his best friends just to avoid hard time in prison. Plus, you never know if one day he will ever betray Niko by telling Patrick or Gerald that he kill Francis.

I had the same problem with this choice, so I'm gonna use some information
Francis is a police officer. But he is corrupt like his brother and even more, his brothers are honest about their criminal activities while Francis is a hypocrite hiding behind his badge and reputation. He will do anything to get more power even ordering the assasination of his own brother.
Derrick is a complicated person. He showed some kind of soft spot as he was seen in the bank heist trying to calm down everyone but on the other side he was a traitor as he ratted out his friends to avoid prision and then ordered their assasination.
I think one reason Derrick started drugs was because of guilt of his actions. Francis on the other side was thirsty for more power.
Both of them are bad people and and since Derrick dies anyway between 2008-2013 it's better to kill Francis so that both of them will be out of the picture once on for all.
P. S. Apart from that the McReary's were affected by Derrick's death rather than Francis's and in the funeral if Francis was killed, Niko will sit next to Derrick while if Derrick was killed Niko won't even talk to Francis

The real story of this mission Derrick does died in that mission because in gta v story if you choose packie for the heist Misson he tell you the story about him and Niko and Derrick.

I always kill Francis Derek is bad too.But Francis will do more damage and his ability goes away when you beat the game.Kiki will give you that ability forever even though she's a stalker. Also Love the Orange Infernus my favorite car in all of gta.

At least when Francis saves the priest at Derrick’s funeral, he drives his mother to the graveyard while a random NPC drives Kate.

You can get a gf on the dating website at an Internet cafe called Kiki who if she likes you removes cops for you if needed. Francis’s ability therefore isn’t useful

In the mission "undertaker" if you kill Derrick in the previous mission, Niko will actually sit away from Francis but if you kill Francis as seen in this video, he sits right next to Derrick.

Bernie aka Florian is such a cool character that I didn't really care for at first but then he grew on me...I wonder why you can't call him for friend activities , that would have been cool.
Always spared Francis. He may be a crooked cop, but he never back stabbed Niko. Francis is way above Dmitri in that sense.
I like Derrick better, he betrayed the IRA. But because he betrayed them, and others, how do you know he won't betray you? But then Francis threatens to ruin you if you don't off Derrick. Letting either one live could easily mean the other screws you over. I can't remember who I killed in my last playthrough, but that's role play, far as I know it actually doesn't matter which one you kill, neither come after you later. Francis isn't any better though, although killing him I wouldn't be torn up about. I'd probably feel better if you could just get them both there and then.
Something on the Internet said that killing Derrick is the canon option, but despite that, I still choose to kill Francis.
Unfortunately killing Francis is the canon option, then Derrick dies from a heroin overdose, after the events from GTA IV, before the events of GTA V

I never knew that Francis would help niko clear 3 star wanted levels, and I never knew he would pay niko even more if called, and I never knew Derrick really was the rat traitor everyone said he was. I killed Francis everytime because I believed Derrick was innocent and a good guy deep down, I never once considered it a difficult decision. Maybe I was wrong.
Hey Prof, big fan here. Just wanted to say, i know you're not a pc player so i've got a tip for you. You can set your steam status to either offline or invisible so you dont get these steam message sounds that make everybody double check if that's their steam or not xD. Cheers, loving the playthroughs !
And the funniest thing is that the Infernus that Florian (Bernie) drove was bugged by Johnny Klebbitz who was working for Stubbs. After you complete that mission Knowing Me, Knowing You, Stubbs will text you the number to the bug and once you call it, you can hear a couple of hilarious dialogues from Bernie and the third is of Niko shouting and shooting while on a highspeed chase from the cops. lol
It's actually better to whack Derrick; sparing Francis actually allows you to call him to get wanted levels down (only works during the story but still comes in handy). Besides, it's more realistic for criminals to kill rats like Derrick, and in his case, it's essentially a mercy kill (similar to Carlos in Saints Row 2), since Derrick is a dead man walking anyway.
Francis was a corrupt POS, Derrick was a harmless waste.
In the scope of the story it would make more sense to kill Francis. Niko wouldn't want some cop controlling him and telling him to kill guys like Clarence.
It would’ve honestly had been better if killing both was an option and with the rocket launcher explosion hitting the bench they’d be a cutscene that would’ve been more better and satisfying oh and also funny to see it
