Im going to say as a huge fan. That Hand Cannot Erase was the first album that disillusioned me. The title track and Perfect Life are almost cringeworthy to me. The Raven does not have a bad song on it though.
WHOA - I just watched your vid on Mikael for the first time, saw the comment (and your reply) about doing a Steven Wilson vid... and then this was uploaded in the last hour! Must be fate. Really enjoyable 2 vids that I’ve seen, easy sub mate!
WICKED! One of my favourite musicians out there. Such an incredible composer. Great video and choice of material! Up to this point in my guitar playing I was never aware of the "Nashville tuning" and now I will explore it! Thanks✌
Totally agree Greg. Hand Cannot Erase got me into SW (and then Porcupine Tree) - it's a masterpiece. SW is a genius with composition, atmosphere and emotion in my view. He's also great at using atmospheric effects: tremolo, rotary, vibrato and delay. Perfect SW example of simple open string chords (in Drop D): The Sound of Muzak.
What I love is that he isn't doing anything overly complicated. Yes there are odd times and interesting chords in his music, but from my understanding he isn't extremely knowledgable in music theory outside of the basics. That man was born to be a songwriter.
@@irti_pk Spot on. I've heard SW say in interviews that he has little idea of chord names. Some of it might come from translating piano voicings to guitar too. I think it's just a completely natural art for him.
I don't even know where to begin with Steven Wilson. The man is incredible when it comes to songwriting! On a somewhat different note, I think it would be cool to do one of these kinds of videos with Arjen Lucassen. He has some really cool chords and riffs in his music, and I don't see a ton of people talking about his musical skills.
The whole acoustic guitar sound in Raven album was really fascinating to me thought it was vintagy kinda really unique beautiful sound didn't know about Nashville tuning thank you for that
I subscribed to your channel after this video. Very few musicians on RUclips have the guts and knowledge to tackle SW´s music. I remember in the early 2000s when I was first exposed to PTs "In Absentia" and "Deadwing" and realizing how radically different his approach to composition, textures, sound design, etc was. Here´s a guy who didn´t attend music school but spent countless hours REALLY listening and learning everything he considered valuable in music of the last decades and translated that knowledge in his own personal language. I´ve learned so much from his music and still am. Always go back to his PT and solo work for reference in spite of the critique on his latest albums. Thanks Greg
Great video. Can you do one of these for Mastodon? They have such a distinct writing style especially when it comes to chord voicings and progressions.
Sorry for being nerdy 🤓 but it instantly rang in my ears at 5:59. The first half of the last loop isn’t quite right. He indeed sticks to the picking pattern (everything downpicked btw 😜). That time with an powerchord on the 11th fret an the open G and B string (Eb major b6 👻). However… great video. I would love to do such things myself but I know it’s easier said then done so I’m happy there are guys like you out there.
If there's something im good at from being a fan for so long its fascinating chords. Like the 110011 chord he uses alot. The first song i learnt on guitar that made me feel like "wow this actually doesn't sound like shit" was the verse of Every Home is Wired. A to c add9 to an F with open E, a and e strings. Also the chords of The Old Peace. Which might have been composed by either Mariuzs Duda or Steven Wilson.
Meanwhile Steven Wilson bases everything in PT on d chord and tbh i dont rly listen to his stuff other than PT. Maybe you could make a lesson on some Porcupine Tree solos? Like Fear of the blank planet?
Hey!! If you just change this video title to - "How to play like steven wilson" You will get like 100 times more views. I am writing this because I love your work and support you but only 6k views really makes me sad. They should be atleast 100k on each video. Please work on your titles. We need you to keep making these videos. Thanks
I appreciate that feedback. I only titled it that way because I have an Opeth version and did extremely well, so I went for the same title. I might as well give that a change!
Hooray, he finally turned to Steven Wilson 😄
Steven Wilson is in my Top 5 Favorite Artists of all time.
Hand Cannot Erase is a brilliant album. Guthrie’s guitar solo on Regret #9 is something else

Steve Wilson is a legend. A depressed legend.
he isnt depressed

Amazing stuff, so glad you covered SW's music at last. He's an incredible musician to say the least.

My favorite musician for now and ever !
Never clicked soooo fasttt!
Great video! Like how you analyse an artist's sound.

Damn. That's beautiful
This is the best thing...since Steven Wilson!

I never realised how Mastodon-y his riffs are. I like it.
THIS.WAS.FANTASTIC
would love to see a full SW or porcupine tree lesson
I was thinking of a more deep explanation of the chords and melody
Either way, glad you brought Steven Wilson
Thanks for this, looks like HCE was his last great album.
Thank you Greg!!
Can you do something on the Drive Home solo parts?
I just love Drive Home. I'd never really considered how to play it, as it always seemed so far beyond my abilities.
If you take your time you can learn nearly everything, trust me. Just try. 'Cause why not?
Awesome !
Great lesson man! ✌️
What is the tuning for each string I need to try this for future song writing!
So the first guitar is an octave higher? Is that an alto guitar or something of the like?

This was the last thing in my mind. 👌🏽

Allan Holdsworth never played a boring chord
Your acoustic guitar sounds like a 12-string but you're playing a 6-string. Are you using an octave/POG pedal?
Ah, you're tuned in Nashville tuning. Cool.
