Our prison systems, like our education systems, need to be completely reworked in line with the contemporary knowledge we have of human beings.

Went to her book signing in Houston last week. Disturbing story but a reflection on how the criminal justice system works. As I recall, Texas prisions were privatized after the abolition of slavery, which resulted in more blacks being incarcerated so they could go back into the fields. Slavery by any other name. Continues today, sadly.

They also used to lease convicts to work in the same lands the slaves worked.

And get rid of private prisons!!! That's the most important thing we can do to take the money out of the system. Otherwise there is no incentive for rehabilitation because they make more off keeping people locked up!

Our prisons are disgusting. It's just a business that is filled with Corruption and hate at it's worst. Thank you for your courage sharing with us, and the hardest journey there is.

A couple of very decent cops and an amazing public defence lawyer, saved my ass from a similar fate. I was able to finish school and went on to have a successful (and very law abiding) life.

I don't know who said it but it goes something like this. The measure of a society can be determined by how it treats its prisoners, its poor, its disabled and the elderly.

Drugs/alcohol at first feel good. Then, you need to use them to feel normal. Not all of us were necessarily harming others. I never went to prison, primarily because my father was a connected "politician," who had done a lot of favors for folks. But I can say that 2 girlfriends were confused, because my memory was bad and I was doing what had become normal to me. So, some friends/family were at least harmed a little. After you quit, you think, WTF? I lived through the Rockefeller laws she mentioned. I'm 67 now, and some former friends only recently became free.

Prison should be about rehabilitation but it's really about free labor. Doesn't help that a chunk of our population seems obsessed with punishment, and the punishment they want seems to frequently far outweigh the actual crime.

The exact opposite is true for the wealthy. Their prisons would seem like a luxury vacation to the average American.

We need to understand and take lessons from the prisons and jails in Europe but especially Germany. Our prisons and jails are mental illness incubators. Theirs are self-esteem amplifiers.

One day prisons will be looked the same way as we look at extermination camps. I am sure we have people capable to understand the problem and give a better recommendation instead of putting more people in prison

Own kingdom is correct. All animals have a pecking order. Open air prisons let the prisoners manage themselves as there is no way to legislate or enforce morality.

I have videos from a jail that show me being abused. How can I get a journalist to report on them and share my story with the public?

I agree with almost very statement Keri said. I would add on white males to interactions with police. I believe a black or brown person and white males will most likely be treated different than a white woman. Keri seems to me filled the empty void from ice skating after prison by becoming a criminal justice reporter. I wonder if Keri didn't go to prison would she be a criminal justice reporter now ? Keri before prison and Keri after prison.

Prison should be a place, to get help for people who have problems education is key, part of release should require a GED to get out, and passing emotional growth classes, and financial responsibility classes... first!

Lifers go to a different place where you don't see them anymore their crimes require lifetime confinement. We don't waist resources on murders and lifetime sentences, and the like they have already made their choice.
