to add to tip #8, TOTO makes a handheld, portable, battery operated, washlet (bidet) you can use in place of toilet paper. all you would need is a couple of squares of paper to dry your ass after you're done...it has decent pressure, so it cleans the chocolate starfish like you're giving it a shower, leaving you with zero skids on your chonies, and less waste in your black tank. you can also use the remaining water in the washlet to wash down any mudslides you may make, and the only paper you put in that trash can will be the one you dry your wet ass with. win/win👍
Perfect! I don't know why people get weird about this subject. I think for bondockers it is vitally important. I travel in a 23 foot class C and I use all of the tricks you covered. I can go a month with out dumping my black tank. One thing I do before dumping is to fill my black tank with water so it sloshes around on the way to the dump site. Great vid really enjoyed it!

Once your tank is empty, and just leaving your site, place ice cubes and toilet chemicals in together, and drive off, the movement of the RV churns the ice cubs and chemicals to clean residue......a really awesome video, great job you two, all other recommendations are right on!
Well Done!!! For Lady Camping, I use a Plastic Folgers Coffee Can to pee in the tent at night. The handle, (indents on one side) enables me to actually stand up (straight or you'll miss the can!) to use it. The lid snaps back on and I empty it into the Campground out- house toilet in the AM. Another tip with our cassette toilet if going #2: just open the hole and bypass the bowl area completely.) Older n Wiser!!
Haha! The mud slide, the racing stripes, the sticky swirly...sometimes...it just is what it is, ya get used to it. If it's a minor incident anyway. If I'm camping alone, I'll just use _my own_ self-generated jet stream when it's time. I'm pretty much unwavering about a clean tookus, so I do employ the baby wipe finish, and keep 1 qt freezer bags on hand to hold the wipes- sealed tight for eventual trash removal day. I'm also good with not using my toilet while boondocking and taking a short hike with my porta-stool. Especially if camping with the ladies- I'll give them the toilet and I'll go primitive. A very helpful video about the realities we don't talk about.

Thank you for pointing out the no-no's of outdoor pooping--too many times have we come across places (even in our iconic national parks!!) where it's clear many people have used the toilet complete with leaving their paper (and other)waste there for the park staff (who WILL come across it) to clean it up. Not ok. We live in the country so peeing outside is a no-brainer, and I've even had to use the "cup technique" in a one-bathroom home with a teenager taking 45 minute showers (lol). So thanks again--a good subject to put out there, and helpful ways to manage tanks!
I didn't go through all the comments, so I don't know if anyone shared this already. My tip for this topic: Meta-Mucil. I take one serving in the evening and #2 in the morning comes out clean. (Those that know, know what I mean.) Since it comes out clean, you use way less TP and it's way less smelly since you separate your TP. I'm a latecomer to your channel but love all your videos.

Great Tips! I struggle with my 6 grandkids filling my 15 gal black tank on a day trip to a soccer tournament. They overuse the water and sometimes the black tank fills up and we are still at the tournament. My backup plan is I keep a backpack with plastic garbage bags that are big enough to line the inside of the toilet and shavings that you would use for a hamster or rabbit cage. Line the toilet put in some shavings and we can finish the tournament. I've also heard of van lifers tying a cut off pantyhose leg, then tie it to where you attach the black hose. Dig a shallow trench, lay the pantyhose in the trench, open the tank drain and the pantyhose holds all but the liquid. Pick up pantyhose put it in a plastic garbage bag and cover the trench with dirt. A plastic bag with pet shavings would work to keep pantyhose from smelling until it can be disposed of.

My setup must have a Bidet, so, like at home, tp is for drying only... shower fresh every time... I think I've found a way to have a bidet on a composting toilet... I'm going to put a bidet nozzle in the front diversion area. Then slide forward for the bidet... I think it will work... For the lavatory, I'm going to do a step valve for the water...
This video was great. I honestly can say that it is very uncomfortable subject, but great ideas for people who have never boomdocked, or is preparing for a trip to boomdock.
You guys make the grates videos on the small sizes rv and you include the large rv,s too, and you should have say a quarter tank full of water and add the treatment too and your off, and like you said dump your tanks black then grey, i rv and years ago i worked at an rv place, and there i fall in love with the thoughts of traveling, enjoy guys, you only live one that i know of, lol. love your videos.stay safe.

Your thoroughly detailed honest toilet usage and black water tank space is best I watched on a subject not easy to talk about. I am a wastewater treatment plant operator and know how difficult it is to be able to discuss this subject matter with people. Wanted to suggest a better option for black water tank additive that is non chemical and is organic. Most additives are harmful to the microbiological organisms that are in there. The organisms are necessary for the processing of the wastewater at a treatment plant. Once wastewater reaches the plant we utilize oxygen to transform bacteria into single cell carbon based organisms that work to treat the water. The organisms that come from our waste die when additives change the molecular environment the need to survive. Some additives create super bugs that are also bad because they need more food and oxygen to survive so they eat the other organisms for their food and dissolved oxygen. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE is a better solution. It will sanitize, mask odors and assist in breaking up the product without harming the vitally necessary organisms. Try HYDROGEN PEROXIDE it’s less expensive than the other additives and environmentally friendly!

For tip #4, TPX, try a brief spray first from your vinegar bottle, then place the paper. 1) It holds the TP in place. 2) A wet bowl is slippery, it lets things slide down more easily. Things stick more to dry bowls. Water makes a bowl slippery when you need it to be slippery. 3) If not using vinegar, the dry paper, when hit by the waste, absorbs the moisture in the waste and sticks to the porcelain, since the moisture in the stool plays the part of the vinegar you would have already sprayed there, first. 4) That thin film of vinegar lubricates between the bowl and the paper, and 5) the vinegar spray helps maintain the overall sanitary condition of the facilities. I use a urinal when in my Aliner, especially at night. Then I dump it in the morning. The beauty of the Aliner is that usually there isn’t a bathroom. I have a moderate sized laundry bottle that’s great for collecting the pee at night.

We used a "poopy tent" while boondocking before we had a camper with a bathroom. We made a toilet out of a bucket with a toilet seat on top and double lined it with trash bags and use wood chips to absorb liquid and smells. We even #2'd in it daily and no smell. We changed it out every 2 days. It was actually more comfortable than the small bathroom in our first camper. Might be an option to stay our even longer for you guys.
Big large-mouth plastic container like peanuts come in, is where #1 goes into. Add Camco orange and you will thank yourself! The new trailer will have a C-Head. I will use the TPX method since sometimes the bucket side of the urine diverter can be "compromised". Another way to save fresh and not fill the gray tank as quickly. Install a valve connected to the hot side and dumps water back into the fresh tank until you feel heat, then close and proceed. The new trailer will have surface mounted copper pipe and brass valves.
I do the X my wife doesn’t like to. I love wipes and use our used zip lock bags. Also turn off the pump for a dry drop. We also 🪣 bucket our 🚿 shower water 💦 and use it to flush. I use empty wide mouth orange juice bottles for a quick # 1 or a handy tree lol. This allows us to go 2 to three weeks. Like your great tips. We love our Battle Born Batterys. Happy trails!
Have you tried a plastic bag to line the toilet? I went tent to camping with 3 little girls (under 10) and this worked with the little hassock port-a-potty for us.

In my country they have some kind of gel that you put into your portable toilet and it makes everything inside like a sand and it comes out very easily.
First off, glad the dry bag thing is working for you to store garbage. Great video on going to the bathroom in a Class B. We did the black/grey tank dance for the first two years of ownership (both are 13 gallons capacity each). Having had an AirHead Composting toilet on a sailboat for 12 years, we decided to go back to that method and bought an AirHead for our rig. In our case, we were able to combine the two tanks (black and grey) into one big 26 gallon grey tank now so, that also affected our decision. We put the toilet paper in the basket, empty the “liquids” container discretely about every 1 1/2 days (and yes, urea is suppose to be a fertilizer), change out the “solids” container about every two to three weeks (longer if there are pit toilets to use in the area) and find that this works great for us. Watching that water go down the toilet was maddening for us! Glad you guys have figured out a system for the “standard” RV toilet and were willing to put it out there on video. Oh, speaking of dry bags, smaller one for doing delicates! A black one will heat up the water in the sun before adding in underwear/socks. Leave the top open and stick your arm in there to work as the agitator. Three rinses work for us. Like you guys have found, we’d run out of socks and underwear first. If you got “deep pockets” money wise, Merino wool underwear/shirts were a game changer. You can fit twice as many as any cotton ones. Plus, they take less space storing away.
I do not understand what you mean in this comment about dry bags and heating up water in the sun. Are you speaking about washing laundry ? I just dont know how you went fr toilets to underwear and socks ??
Your X trick would probably work on a composting toilet too. It's very important to keep those dry without adding too much water from cleaning it. Most people use a spritz bottle with vinegar water. I've also heard of very thin rice papers and coffee filters being used but toilet paper is already there so use it! The nice thing about a diverting CT is that you can pre-plan those Xs so they're there in an "emergency". :) Great video guys. Nice to see people just talk about normal bodily functions without being squeamish. It is what it is

We have a 9 gallon black tank. To conserve space I cut up a small microfiber towel and made pee cloths, we also have a portable bidet and put the TP in the trash can.
Somebody was just talking about the Kula cloth and I had to look it up! Glad you found a way to make them and help with that 9 gallon tank. That would be tough for more than one person longer than a weekend for sure. Thanks for watching!

Very Informative about how to extend your Black Tank. Doesn't the concept of if it's yellow let it mellow and brown you flush down also make a dry flush for #2. You therefore can potentially use less water to flush due to the yellow water already in the toilet. The amount of water you save by using the yellow water vs flushing would add up over the course of your stay. Obviously, as a single user, I don't have the problem about synchronizing my bathroom habits to make sure that there is enough yellow water to flush.
Yes that is very true! I think that's why I looked weird at Chris when she said that in the video, but I think she does that more. You're right it is harder with two people, but would definitely save more water!

Good info. The TPX was a new one for me. I will also try your solo cup method. We happily boondock in our campervan for about 5-6 days before the black tank is full. We like to use a bidet - a water bottle top named Culo/Amazon- this allows for 3 benefits; 1 is (a little) more water, which your black tank likes, and 2 is no paper needed, and 3 is the added toilet bowl rinse it provides. You might want to give it a try. We joke that we used to miss only 2 things when we camped, our jacuzzi and our bidet. Now, it's down to one, until you come up with an ingenious idea for a jacuzzi. We use the Happy Camper organic deodorizer, as instructed. We have used the same tub for 3.5 years so far. -- new subscriber

Also have you tried Happy Bowl Liners? We use those for our TPX lol and we love them.

My setup must have a Bidet, so, like at home, tp is for drying only... shower fresh every time... I think I've found a way to have a bidet on a composting toilet... I'm going to put a bidet nozzle in the front diversion area. Then slide forward for the bidet... I think it will work... For the lavatory, I'm going to do a step valve for the water...

Your thoroughly detailed honest toilet usage and black water tank space is best I watched on a subject not easy to talk about. I am a wastewater treatment plant operator and know how difficult it is to be able to discuss this subject matter with people. Wanted to suggest a better option for black water tank additive that is non chemical and is organic. Most additives are harmful to the microbiological organisms that are in there. The organisms are necessary for the processing of the wastewater at a treatment plant. Once wastewater reaches the plant we utilize oxygen to transform bacteria into single cell carbon based organisms that work to treat the water. The organisms that come from our waste die when additives change the molecular environment the need to survive. Some additives create super bugs that are also bad because they need more food and oxygen to survive so they eat the other organisms for their food and dissolved oxygen.
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE is a better solution. It will sanitize, mask odors and assist in breaking up the product without harming the vitally necessary organisms.
Try HYDROGEN PEROXIDE it’s less expensive than the other additives and environmentally friendly!

For tip #4, TPX, try a brief spray first from your vinegar bottle, then place the paper.
1) It holds the TP in place.
2) A wet bowl is slippery, it lets things slide down more easily. Things stick more to dry bowls. Water makes a bowl slippery when you need it to be slippery.
3) If not using vinegar, the dry paper, when hit by the waste, absorbs the moisture in the waste and sticks to the porcelain, since the moisture in the stool plays the part of the vinegar you would have already sprayed there, first.
4) That thin film of vinegar lubricates between the bowl and the paper, and
5) the vinegar spray helps maintain the overall sanitary condition of the facilities.

I use a urinal when in my Aliner, especially at night. Then I dump it in the morning. The beauty of the Aliner is that usually there isn’t a bathroom. I have a moderate sized laundry bottle that’s great for collecting the pee at night.

Yes! The average American uses 80 to 100 gallons per day in a home! Crazy....
We used a "poopy tent" while boondocking before we had a camper with a bathroom. We made a toilet out of a bucket with a toilet seat on top and double lined it with trash bags and use wood chips to absorb liquid and smells. We even #2'd in it daily and no smell. We changed it out every 2 days. It was actually more comfortable than the small bathroom in our first camper. Might be an option to stay our even longer for you guys.
Big large-mouth plastic container like peanuts come in, is where #1 goes into. Add Camco orange and you will thank yourself! The new trailer will have a C-Head. I will use the TPX method since sometimes the bucket side of the urine diverter can be "compromised". Another way to save fresh and not fill the gray tank as quickly. Install a valve connected to the hot side and dumps water back into the fresh tank until you feel heat, then close and proceed. The new trailer will have surface mounted copper pipe and brass valves.
I do the X my wife doesn’t like to. I love wipes and use our used zip lock bags. Also turn off the pump for a dry drop. We also 🪣 bucket our 🚿 shower water 💦 and use it to flush. I use empty wide mouth orange juice bottles for a quick # 1 or a handy tree lol. This allows us to go 2 to three weeks. Like your great tips. We love our Battle Born Batterys. Happy trails!

Have you tried a plastic bag to line the toilet? I went tent to camping with 3 little girls (under 10) and this worked with the little hassock port-a-potty for us.

In my country they have some kind of gel that you put into your portable toilet and it makes everything inside like a sand and it comes out very easily.

First off, glad the dry bag thing is working for you to store garbage. Great video on going to the bathroom in a Class B. We did the black/grey tank dance for the first two years of ownership (both are 13 gallons capacity each). Having had an AirHead Composting toilet on a sailboat for 12 years, we decided to go back to that method and bought an AirHead for our rig. In our case, we were able to combine the two tanks (black and grey) into one big 26 gallon grey tank now so, that also affected our decision. We put the toilet paper in the basket, empty the “liquids” container discretely about every 1 1/2 days (and yes, urea is suppose to be a fertilizer), change out the “solids” container about every two to three weeks (longer if there are pit toilets to use in the area) and find that this works great for us. Watching that water go down the toilet was maddening for us! Glad you guys have figured out a system for the “standard” RV toilet and were willing to put it out there on video. Oh, speaking of dry bags, smaller one for doing delicates! A black one will heat up the water in the sun before adding in underwear/socks. Leave the top open and stick your arm in there to work as the agitator. Three rinses work for us. Like you guys have found, we’d run out of socks and underwear first. If you got “deep pockets” money wise, Merino wool underwear/shirts were a game changer. You can fit twice as many as any cotton ones. Plus, they take less space storing away.

Your X trick would probably work on a composting toilet too. It's very important to keep those dry without adding too much water from cleaning it. Most people use a spritz bottle with vinegar water. I've also heard of very thin rice papers and coffee filters being used but toilet paper is already there so use it! The nice thing about a diverting CT is that you can pre-plan those Xs so they're there in an "emergency". :) Great video guys. Nice to see people just talk about normal bodily functions without being squeamish. It is what it is

We have a 9 gallon black tank. To conserve space I cut up a small microfiber towel and made pee cloths, we also have a portable bidet and put the TP in the trash can.

Very Informative about how to extend your Black Tank. Doesn't the concept of if it's yellow let it mellow and brown you flush down also make a dry flush for #2. You therefore can potentially use less water to flush due to the yellow water already in the toilet. The amount of water you save by using the yellow water vs flushing would add up over the course of your stay. Obviously, as a single user, I don't have the problem about synchronizing my bathroom habits to make sure that there is enough yellow water to flush.
Yes that is very true! I think that's why I looked weird at Chris when she said that in the video, but I think she does that more. You're right it is harder with two people, but would definitely save more water!

Good info. The TPX was a new one for me. I will also try your solo cup method. We happily boondock in our campervan for about 5-6 days before the black tank is full. We like to use a bidet - a water bottle top named Culo/Amazon- this allows for 3 benefits; 1 is (a little) more water, which your black tank likes, and 2 is no paper needed, and 3 is the added toilet bowl rinse it provides. You might want to give it a try. We joke that we used to miss only 2 things when we camped, our jacuzzi and our bidet. Now, it's down to one, until you come up with an ingenious idea for a jacuzzi. We use the Happy Camper organic deodorizer, as instructed. We have used the same tub for 3.5 years so far. -- new subscriber
