I am traveling world cities where my followers and subscribers live and they are interested in learning expressive art direction. I hope you understand my recent video upload is slow, cause I should be in different cities every week. For last a couple months, I run workshops in Seoul, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seattle, Denver, New York, Montreal and etc. Next cities are Atlanta, Houston, San Jose, Florence, London, Paris, Los Angeles and etc. If you are interested in joining my workshop or tracking where I go, see my travel schedule at www.zinlim.com/class
On video uploading I will try my best to have some time to shoot new videos more frequently. Thanks for waiting!!!
At workshop I draw so many life size heads with a finger-size willow stick. I wanted avoid getting used to the same pattern. So, in this video, I used jumbo vine charcoal and drew a tiny portrait.

When I can get to the level of work of 5 minutes, I will be very happy!!!
Congratulations!
Thanks. The first 5 minutes is one of my main themes of any workshop:)
Zim, again YOU AMAZE ME TO NO END ,especially with that big brick of charcoal. Now your just showing off!!!! Bless you for sharing this with us!
I dream to drwa like that
LOVE IT!!!!!
Like that huge chunk of charcoal you are drawing with. I really appreciate this style of drawing, fast, deceptively messy, and a beautifull endresult.
Thanks for watching!!!
Oh man, is this the power of values?? Amazing.
Value works a lot. Thanks for watching!
Hey, I actually like to use this method a lot when I do portraits and Ive been practicing it with photo studies for quite a while. It really is a great way to quick portraits with that expressive smokey look. One thing I hate though is getting all that charcoal off my fingers every time😁
I love each and everyone of your videos! PLese never stop!
Watching you drawing is such treat. Food for eyes. Thank You.
Keep uploading sir we are loving it.
Thanks for liking:)
I like the way of working with subtraktion to get the Lights - it seems like sculpting with light
I do consider sculpting head when I draw and paint.
Great video! As a beginning youtube artist I learn so much here
Thanks for watching!
Black/white portraits. Best portraits in the world.
Wooooow ! I love your technique and your works ,Very talented !
Fantastic.
ARTMASTER ZIN LIM. YOUR DEMOS OF CHARCOAL DRAWINGS ARE SUPERB. I FEEL THEY ARE INVALUABLE FOR AMATEUR ARTISTS...ANILKUMAR, MUMBAI INDIA.
I'm glad you like it
Was the ear missed out deliberately? I feel this was an important part to capture the likeness.
Спасибо Всегда смотрю ваши видео,очень нравится и радует глаз.Продолжайте в том же духе и радуйте людей своим искусством.
Sorry I can read it.
@@zinlimart Google translates: "Thank you I always watch your videos, I really like and please the eye."
I agree with their response. You're an amazing artist!
Zin LEONARDO lim you just got a new IRISH sub brilliant
Can anyone tell me what charcoal did he used in this piece? Im really curious
Either vine or willow is fine.
Hi Zin!! This is Ritu from India.I am a big fan of your art. Incredibly beautiful art!!!
Pls mention all the materials you use....
Check description. Every video has its material.
Gorgeous. Thank you
So beautiful ! I'm an art student and I wondered myself : do you think the approach of portrait in volume like you do is an accessible way for students ?
Or start with a solid drawing in line is more learnful and accessible ?
(When I speak about volume I speak about big area of charcoal and sculpting in it, and when I speak about line I speak about drawing forms with line in 3d not just simply drawing what I see in 2d)
Yes. But your teacher could dislike what you do.
@@zinlimart I will see that (she knows and appreciate a lot your work) thank you for your answer :)
from France !
I like your art style, and I practice in same way,it helps me a lot. I've learned and I'm learning from your art works.. It's really interesting and very helpful for me...
From India 😊
1st comment and i love you!
Magnífico. Gracias
Nice👍👍
Great work!
Thanks:)
Vàry vary good job brother 👍👍👍 but I like mass drowing technic.
the valuable part is that the process... process...the working finger.....tiny forces on the tips......
not the charcoal, not the paper even not the finished itself
Thanks for agreeing with touching :)
@@zinlimart so it's all about the pressure and control?
i love your style❤❤❤
That large piece of charcoal... Where did you get it and who makes it? Love your work!!!
I found it at an art store local.
amazing video love it😁😁
What kind of charcoal do you use? I can't blend/smear mine like that at all. It's highly upsetting.
Try use vine or willow, not compressed.
Acho vc genial..
Is there a method to you getting accurate proportions first try? I usually have to try multiple times before I can even get one shape down semi-accurately.
what about the ear ?
you drew a van gogh girl. well the rest is fine, good video.
i love your videos.
Thanks for watching 😀
Magnifique travail, je ne parle pas anglais dommage mais cherche à apprendre cette méthode dessin par surface et non le contour
astiggggg 💘
Great job! What tool are you using please? What's the brand name of it please? Many thanks!
Vine charcoal soft by Winsor Newton.
Thanks. I have to try this. What kind of paper do you use?
Strathmore drawing 300 medium for this.
me encanta
Hi... How do you preserve it once done? Do you apply fixative spray?
Yes I do!
Thank you so much for the reference. ❤️
Thanks for watching!!!
good job but the size of the drawing is too small for such charcoal stick or vice-versa: the stick is too big for such small portrait.
Don't stop me to the fun:)
Nice worke
Thanks:)
I wish I could draw like you. I have tried charcoal art and it has never worked out🙁
Continue enjoying your art and you'll have own style.
@@zinlimart ok I will try. thanks a lot.
wow i wish i could draw like this 😟😥
How do you get source material? Or does it matter since this is educational..?
P.S. I love portraits! Thanks for sharing
I get copyright free photos from Pixabay and buy licensed photos from Shutterstock.

That's cool. I did quite a few portraits unwittingly out of school 😂
Just curious
i can't see the hand
what is that thing that looked like and eraser or a clay called?
Kneaded eraser.
Which paper
All material list is at the video description.
That vine charcoal brand name please ?
Someone gave me one that is sold at Blick art store. No special one. But it is box shape.
What do u like more to work with box shape or normal round (thick or thin ) ?
They are about the same to me.
Not same but Really nice!
Doesn't have to be same to be nice:)
yo pensé qe iba a dibujar la mano y darle mas definicion al pelo y sombras, mm no se
i use printing paper, but i am not able to blend the charcoal that smoothly with fingers like you (i also used blending stumps)and my charcoal stick is too dark on paper even i am applying very low pressure
plz give some advice it will be really helpful
You are probably using 'compressed' charcoal, not willow or vine.
yes i am using compressed charcoal, and i am using normal A4 size printing paper
should i change the paper also?
Yes
Excuse me Zin Lim. Thanks for your videos i'm learn a lot but i'am novice with this suff. i usally draw with pencils. Charcoal willow or vine is the same charocoal? I do not understand the diference between charcoal vine/willow and compress charocoal, for what is the characol compress? Thank for the advises.
i already used compressed charcoal, actually it is too dark charcoal and not too smooth i prefer you to use willow/vine charcoal to get smoothness and light shades like zinlim
hope it helps you
Nice drawing but what happened to the sexy hand?
quelle est le matériau utilisé j'adore
pour dessiné et pour gommé
This looks really exciting, but I'm just starting to learn so I suspect your classes would be far too advanced for me.
More than the half of artists came to my workshop thought they are beginner or first time using charcoal.
Try it. Sooner than you think you'll be there.
👍👍👍
Dirty😊🖒
This drawing looks messy
