Two years later, I happened to just click onto this video. I forgot that I had seen it before, but still, what a great video. An absolute great explanation and step by step of the system and how it works. I miss seeing your videos.
This is what a typical "rust-belt" car looks like here in the frozen wasteland of Manitoba. For a moment I wasn't all that concerned by looking at all that corrosion until I remembered how far south you are. Sometimes you must know when to walk away from a job. That being said, sometimes it's also good to push through stuff we don't want to do. Watching you work through your problem solving methodology is not only entertaining and informative, I find it to be quite soothing. Almost like comfort food for the brain. Keep the videos coming and thank you for making them. Cheers and Happy New Year!
Thanks for taking time to upload ....having worked on diesel engines that are exposed to elements on drilling rigs ....I didn't know car engines did this so , even an old guy like me can learn something from just listening and watching your vedios .....Happy and safe new year to you and family Eric 👪
Nice! I have an 09 FX50s with 205k miles same color even but with the java brown interior. The 5.0 V8 is super fun. It started missing last week and check engine light came on. I got home used my tool determined it was a coil pack, swapped in a new one, 30 min later all is well.
Thanks for the FX content. I own a crashed 07 and have almost got it to being licensed again. I look forward to your details and lessons on repair. Cheers to You and your family in 2022.
There are so many students that need your help in the classroom, I don't know what you are doing in the shop. In fact, you will be a very good teacher, keep it up, Thanks
Eric you're a wise man. Remember that Black Lexus years ago? What was it's final result? I agree, l would do a complete ground connection cleaning and also remove every connector, clean with DeoxIT 5. High resistance/corroded connections will produce all kinds of erroneous/intermittent failures.
That vehicle could use a few cans of Deoxit and several terminal manual cleanings. I have to agree with the mechanic...flood vehicles are purchased to save a ton of money. Most of them are disclosed as subjected to floods so those customers who have them got those vehicles for well below the average price. Now comes the battle resulting from their inexpensive purchase, corrosion and water contamination concerns. There is absolutely no reason to give them a discount or feel sorry for them when looking for repairs as they were warned or just didn't pay attention etc. I wouldn't give them a warranty on any work either. Anyone who can stand the stench of mold in their car has a screw loose.
Eric, your videos are always excellent. This video has to be the best one you've ever done! The explanation of the exhaust cam phaser issue history and the Nissan TSB was detailed and easy to understand. You are truly a master diagnostician with unequalled teaching skills. Have a wonderful New Year's weekend!
Happy New Year to you and yours and thanks for entertaining us in 2021. I'd have no problem with buying a salvaged vehicle providing the price was right and it had a valid home state inspection, however flood vehicles are always an exception to this rule!
In your shoes, I would clean that corrosion on those ground connectors, check solenoïd connector aswell, and let the customer have car back, drive it for couple weeks and get feedback from her. Just the way it looked, I wouldn't be surpised if this should be the problem! Sometimes data don't provide an accurante information, especially for a flooded car, they provide general information based on statistics, but this could be a specific problem related to water damage. Sometimes, you have to figure out yourself. This my opinion. Good job men, I stayed motivated to watch whole video🙂
Flood vehicles always unpredictable with same one conclusion - not even touch them with 10 ft pole) Just have watched Flood Ford Focus video in five parts from Ivan, Pine Hollow Diagnostics. Happy New Year to You Eric and You Family! Thanks a lot for all your hard work, Cheers! Greetings from Canada!
Eric after 2 hours of hearing its corroded yeah we get the message its corroded.. I wish this problem was tested by Ivan of pine hollow auto diagnostics he would have scoped it to test properly and verify if the part was bad
ERIC, AWESOME video /information you always share thanks for taking us with you happy new year and looking forward to ur videos in 2022 cheeeeeers from Canada brother.
I had that p0024 with low power on my Infiniti G35 after I removed and rebuilt the head due to burned valves. It did not have that code befor I removed the head. Changing the oil &filter made it run better for about 10 miles, then engine light and loss of power came back. I tried swapping the solenoids from bank 1 &2 (which u can do on this engine) but nothing changed. The Fix was changing the oil filter every 10-20 miles, 4 times in a row... Some gunk or somthing must have fell in the oil pan when the head was off an kept clogging up the filter. I also found that the pcm will shut off both vvt solinieds once it sets that code. Also the solenoids won't work until clearing the dtc first.
Yes, the computer takes the VVT function offline when it detects a discrepancy of desired vs actual position for safety of the engine to prevent bending valves and such.
Yeah he went overboard on the assumption's. The car is 12 years old with 140K miles & he pulled up a stored code. If it was going to have major issues from supposedly being flooded it would have them already. I've seen oxidation & surface rust on a lot of cars. He never did investigate the stalling when turning. Far from a nightmare.
RUN, RUN, RUN away from that flood car! I did enjoy the video because my wife has a 2013 Infiniti EX37 with the 325hp 3.7 engine. I'm changing the oil every 6 months on her car because of that complex engine and it usually has less than 3k miles on the oil. 42k on the car since I bought it new.
This is an excellent video. Thank you very much for sharing this with us. I remember seeing this a few years back on a Nissan Maxima but I did not pursue it.
First off I want to say I love your videos, I own a G37 which has a similar engine layout and the vq37, I in the northeast and have all the same corrosion on the timing cover and grounds. It's never been in the flood but the ny salt causes all these rust. Again thanks for your videos
Good call, walk away, the problems will never end. Looks like salt water to me based on the amount of rust everywhere. Just imagine what other grounds and connectors will look like......
I'm a mechanic too and own ( have owned ) few vehicles with VQ35 engines. Thing you can do to save the retarders is to take sand paper 160-220grit and sand the mating face on the engine side ( the metal one),then wash, put back everything together and run valve retarder re-learn procedure. One option is thru the scan tool, next option is to hold the RPMs in Park at 2000. Have in mind that at first those magnetic retarders will bite in the freshly sanded surface and it will take few hours of driving till it start engaging/disengaging properly. Other tail tail sign of problem with them is when you go slowly right about 1000-1200rpm engine starts to shake ( acts like missfiring but it's the exhaust valves bouncing from 30-0degree) this happens on 07-08 Vq35HR Rust in the engine bay is absolutely normal for cars operated in snow ( rust ) belt: hose clamps rusting away, filter clamps eaten so badly from the salt that they literally fall apart, etc etc.
Are you saying to sand the part on the engine that the retarder would connect to? How much would you sand? I'm not at the point where I need this repair yet.... but maybe someday!
@@Jondbuch yes you sand the metal face that the restarter is touching. Go with 220 soaked In oil and dont press. All you have to do is lightly " de glaze " the surface. And again it will take few drive cycles untill retarder starts to engage properly but this will fix your problem for free. I did it on my Infiniti, first pulled the retarders from junkyard and there was 0 difference, then sanded the metal plate and Booom fixed.
Happy New Year! I know it's really hard to disappoint a customer, but you seriously should not take on any repairs with that vehicle. That's a neverending electrical nightmare. Hate to say it, but the owner should just sell it and cut her losses.
Eric, Happy New Year to you and the family, I wish you the best, I'm glad you didn't proceed any further with that Infinity, in Canada, in Ontario, by law, if we purchase a vehicle that's been flooded, it can not be registered, it's either for parts or export only
You're right in not doing the repair. It's not your fault this person bought this flood car, that's the fault of some slick sales person! If you do the repair, you will be married to the vehicle. Deep thinking about this one. My opinion. RUN......don't walk away from this one!
Getting stuck or "married" to a vehicle is of course your choice, but there are many ways around that. But on the other hand, if you are low on workload it can put money in the bank providing the customer is willing to go that route plus making it worth you while. Then again if not, then no marriage... But with this vehicle I would have taken one look at it and moved on... You just need to set the guidelines (in writing) before you start working on the vehicle... Always enjoy your videos. Thanks Eric
as someone with their own mobile business, this shit really drives me up the wall. If you buy a luxury car you better have luxury car money. Customers don't value our time or the cost of repairs and parts. they're stuck in the 80's with the value of the dollar and what repairs/diagnostics cost. this customer had the sense to bring you the car instead of taking it to a hack, but they shouldn't act surprised when parts cost money.
Another Awesome video!! I enjoy your content and actually learn a few things. Question, did you charge her a Hazmat fee for breathing all that mold, that sht causes asthma 😳
what is the blue sensor on the vet timing cover? Is there a chance that can go bad? I have a p0021 and changed my oil/filter and the drivers side vet solenoid.
I wonder if the corrosion on the engine is a FX thing. I live in the north east where we have significant road salt in winter months and I am the sole owner of my 2009 FX35 purchased new from Infiniti with only just over 80,000 miles and my engine also has allot of that white crud around the surface and many of the clamps and bolts have rust. I always thought it was the result of engine heat. I was thinking about getting my engine cleaned by a detailer 🤔 (After seeing the seats I do agree this may have been a submerged vehicle but I still find it odd that under the hood that car looks allot like my low mileage vehicle)
I'm getting a P0081 Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Bank 2... 2010 FX35! I'm going to change the VVT Solenoid. Have never seen this code before though.
Hey just a quick question do you have to pay a monthly fee or something like that for those scan tools just wondering or does anybody else know cuz I would like to get one it seems very informative
This is a case where u can't give a customer a quote. U make it clear that it could be simple but your have to charge hourly if you want to work with on it. I would send it back, too much risk of sticking breaking bolts.
I had to laugh at your "lots of rust" comment. You need to work up north in the rust belt. Then you would understand the meaning of rust :-). It's a good video and flood car are a bad deal for the unsuspecting customer.
How did you end up charging the customer for your work? Not asking the amount of money, but did you charge for 100% of your time? I occasionally do some work like this on the side, and just want your opinion and experience.
Hey man i have the same exact car and the same error code with similar symptoms. My car has never been flooded tho. Ive tried changing engine oil and even the solenoids but it didn’t seem to fix it. Should I just change the whole timing cover?
I like both, but the Thinktool is a closed operating system, which means you can't download apps or search the internet. The Launch is a fully functioning tablet. You can download any app from the Google Play store and browse the internet.
If car has solenoids it does not have a camshaft then that's one of those things I heard about 20 something years ago that they were going to come out with back when I was in high school auto shop if that's what I think it is?
Two years later, I happened to just click onto this video. I forgot that I had seen it before, but still, what a great video. An absolute great explanation and step by step of the system and how it works. I miss seeing your videos.
