For those who can’t get past step one because their silver top is extremely tight doesn’t come off(mine spun the entire component), I had to hold the “stem” in place with pliers while I twisted the top off counter clockwise. It was a tight squeeze to get my pliers in there so it gripped some of the rubber as well. Not sure if that made a difference. Hope you have better luck with step 2. I’m stuck here right now since I don’t have the wide screwdriver 😆
I hate these kinds of drains and have no idea how our landlord thought this was a good idea, but thanks to your video I now know how to clean the drain - or just remove the push down part! We have 4 people in our apartment and 3 of them have long hair. You're literally saving me right now cuz I know this thing is just gonna clog like there's no tomorrow. Thank you so much for this video.
Thanks Bud! Did the trick, and since i’m lazy, I didn’t put the plug back in. Nobody’s taking a bath here, horrible well water. Keeping the drain clean is key to keeping the tub clean.
THANKS a million for this video! You saved a single woman from paying a plumber a lot of $$ to resolve a simple (gross) hair clog. TY, too, for providing the Amazon part number for the screwdriver as that screwdriver is vital to achieving success and, as someone else said, it’s not readily available at Lowe’s/HD. THANK YOU!!
So, I loved the video! Super easy, however, when I unscrewed the plastic screw, it broke off the top housing and left the remainder of the plastic screw and bottom plastic of the housing. I tried to twist it off with pliers but it is not budging. Thoughts?
So the plastic screw is broken off in the threads of the metal drain? If this is the case, you can carefully drill a hole into the plastic so that it does not cut into the threads. A small screwdriver working the hole will get it to break out, but it probably will be time consuming
@@jefffrantz1893 yes, the plastic screw head, just the top broke off. Thanks, I will def try the drill. I already broke the housing around it so there was a better grip.
Thanks for the video. I know a lot more now after watching it It doesn't look as thought you're cleaning the trap at all. Is there any way to run a hand held snake down th drain as well ?
I appreciate this tutorial; push-plugs are the bane of my shower-history and I detest the design. If I need to I'll just find a flat sink-cover if I need to prevent water from draining and prevent creepy crawlies from coming up (though in my neck of the nation that's not usually a problem).
Thank you for the video. I’ve been trying to remove this stupid plug for a while now. I was just about to to get the hammer and crow bar until my wife found the video.
You need to turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. If the plastic threads are stripped, you will have to lift up on it as you turn it to get the threads to catch.
just had that problem and i had to grip the rubber gasket with my left hand to hold that steady while turning the top counter clockwise with my RH. now my problem is that i don't have a wide blade big enough to turn the plastic screw.
Make sure you are turning it the right direction. If that is not it, a little gentle persuasion with a pair of channel locks over a rag can break it loose.
It's a helpful video but I need to see how you get a stuck pop up out, all the video's show a already loosened pop up nut, Mine is seizd up pretty good as I write this . I was trying to avoid removing the flange and just get rid of the pop up and use an old style rubber plug.
Thanks! I’m not sure where yours is locked at. I didn’t loosen anything before shooting the video, that’s how tight it normally is. You may be able to turn the entire pop up and remove it as one piece with a pair of channel locks and replace just that part and not the entire drain.
If you still have this problem, take 2 crescent wrenches. Lift the gasket seal and place one on the white plastic tube and then the second wrench on the cap and unscrew counter clockwise as shown. Had the same problem and I was able to get it out.
Thank you for your suggestion but I went and got a better screw driver the blade fit better in the slot and it came loose right away. The screw drivers looked identical but one had a slightly wider blade which did the trick. @@khaldrogo3987
Most times, a wide blade screwdriver works well to turn the plastic screw without damaging it. You will hear a little pop when it breaks loose. Just make sure you are turning it the correct direction.
Thank you for this tip now i don't have to call a plumber. The only thing is mine didn't have that white plastic insert so i didn't need a flathead screwdriver. I must have a cheap one because the plastic around the plug broke off and it's only 2 years old. Now I need to replace the showerhead because something broke inside i heard a loud clunk and the water doesn't come out like it used to.
What does one do when that last piece is stuck and no flathead anything will budge it!? Seriously can't get it to move! My heat gun isn't with me and it's mostly plastic anyway so not feeling like that's a great option.
I have not had one seize before. Make sure you are turning it counter clockwise. Worse case scenario, if it breaks off, you can purchase a new piece to thread into it. You would have to clear out the threads from the old broke off plastic before threading in the new one.
Thank you for your prompt reply! Don't think I want to put it back in. Going with a different piece with a built in hair catcher anyway. Keep on helping people! You're amazing!
I'm trying to remove the top cover for the drain that looks very similar to this, but it's like the landlord put locktite on it so I can't even remove the drain if I wanted to.
Wide blade makes it less likely to damage the plastic. Regular screwdrivers work too. Sometimes dimes will fit in the slot and you can turn the dime with pliers.
I would just make sure that you are turning it the right way. If the plastic screw breaks, make sure you get the same model drain assembly and use the cap from the new one. (if the drain does not need replaced too)
@@jefffrantz1893 I can't turn the slot with a wide blade screwdriver. The slot is metal (brass?) and the slot depth is minimal, it's channel width too wide, and the screwdriver keeps slipping I can't get a bite to turn counterclockwise. Would heating it with a propane torch help?
Sometimes brass screws will seize. Position the screwdriver back on the screw like you had it to unscrew the screw. Gently tap the top of the screwdriver with a hammer and try removing the screw again.
@@jefffrantz1893The top of my push-style plug WILL NOT TURN. I’m afraid if I put some channel locking pliers on it I will snap something off. Is it possible it has a set screw underneath too? Or should I just grab & turn? Many thanks in advance.
Try lifting up on the black rubber as you twist the cap off. Sometimes the cap and the pop up assembly will spin together and lifting up on the black rubber gasket usually works.
Mine was on extremely tight so it was twisting the entire component and not just the top. I had to hold the “stem” of the drain in place with pliers while I twisted off the top counter clockwise
Try lifting up on the black rubber gasket while turning the cap that says “push” on it. The mechanism that pushes up and down sometimes rotates and lifting up on the gasket will keep it from turning. The black gasket is what stops the water from going down the drain. Make sure it is clean, not installed upside down, or torn.
Good luck! I didn’t prep the video, it was shot as I did it. I take them apart at least once a year when the water starts draining slow so they stay loose.
Remember that everything that goes down the drain in the shower potentially will build up in the threads. The companies are making more of the components from plastic so they don’t rust apart, but it makes taking them apart a little more difficult.
