In the UK most people take their test in a manual (passing in an automatic means your license only covers you to drive an automatic - restricting your choice of used cars). Generally people will only take their test in an automatic if they really can't cope with a manual. Because people have learnt to drive in a manual they then generally buy, drive and get used to a manual. I think you very quickly find that you don't even think about changing gear because, as you say, it just becomes an automatic activity.
The problem comes when you get into an automatic after years of only driving manuals. The left foot won't keep still, and because automatics seem to have oversized brake pedals, the automatic reflex reaction of the clutch foot can result in some pretty harsh breaking when it accidently catches the brake pedal!

I will not deny that Automatic Transmission can sometimes make your life more convenient, especially when driving uphill through a massive traffic congestion.
However, manual transmission really requires you to be more alert. To be more calculating of the gear and of driving. You have better connection to your engine also when driving manual. If your gear is wrong, the engine talks back to you. You have a better overall "feel" how your engine is doing.
I always say that driving is both reflex and active thinking. I drive a manual car because not only do I have better control of the machine, It also keeps me mentally alert.

In the US, I got my first car in 1998 - I couldn't drive a manual, but I refused to even consider buying an automatic. & Yes; taking off from a stop doesn't come immediately for most people, but getting used to it doesn't take long. My second vehicle was a GSXR1 - a bike w a linear manual transmission. Bikes, imo, are the best way to learn a manual because the difficult parts happen with your hands (don't learn on a litre bike though...).
For a few years I had two automatic vehicles, but I ditched them in 2006 for a manual & I've never gone back.
I've driven plenty of automatics in my day, but by far & away, the vast majority of my driving has been via manual transmission. & In terms of multi-tasking, I would object that it cannot be done with a manual. As I recall on my way to University on several occasions, I would be driving a manual transmission, eating, studying material for an exam, & listening to an audio lecture via my ipod...all at the same time. It worked for me; generally, I'd call it a terrible idea though...(?)
I think overall though, "knowing how to drive" requires knowing how to drive a manual transmission. If you can only drive an automatic, I'd say you are still on your journey toward learning how to drive.

When I was young one of the most common manual transmissions was the three speed column shift or a four speed with a shift lever on the floor in compact cars. Also most automatics were 2 or 3 speed automatics. At the present time what few manual transmissions that still exist are mostly 6 speed manuals. Also automatics today can have 6, or 8, or even 10 speeds with lock up torque converters. Since I live in a big city with a lot of stop and go traffic I prefer automatic transmissions.

I think one point we missed here and i think its important. Manual transmission performance is highly dependent on the driver how good his driving his. If you do half clutch frequently while shifting gears etc you will wear out clutch and reduce performance anyways. Its very common thing to know but i see many ppl still do it. Found a 2006 Scion Tc for $2000.00! WOW not only a 5 speed, but a 2-door coupe as well!!! It's got a Toyota motor, so it's a mechanical 'goody'. LOVE IT!!!!!! • @robot3759
      @robot3759 Год назад

Why though? If you live in a urban or suburban area (assuming you do, all but 14% of the population does) automatic will be better like 99% of the time. The only thing you'd need a manual for on roads is something like short-shifting to gain traction through a corner and the only reason you should be doing that is if you race (which I sure as hell hope you're not doing, especially in a Scion), otherwise its just dangerous driving.
Don't get me wrong, I love the fun of manual shifting; I play racing games a ton (depending on the track anything between 40-70 shifts every minute and a half) and always use the manual shift option. However, do I think it is practical for daily use? No; I think its between slightly and extremely annoying when all I want my car to do is get me from one place to another.
The only argument I really see for manuals that isn't just personal preference is the lower purchase and upkeep cost, although that doesn't really seem to be a factor in your decision, so at this rate I'm pretty sure you just have lost touch with the reality that automatic cars are better than manuals on paved roads (especially considering how you type the word "online" as two words; it screams that you haven't interacted with modern technology since 1980).
If you want to shift, just get a sim racing setup and play racing games (total cost maybe $380 including the console, game, and sim setup if you buy all used); you'll be able to do it a lot more often (more = better, right?) and actually do some of the fun things you can do with manual shifting as opposed to hassling through gear changes on clogged city streets.

A kg more or less, those are thoughts that belong to race cars. Further, lorries use a manual - but - automatic, they suggest suggestively reliability in what the standard cars use. But it has no resmblence technically.
Also.No normal person wants 6 or 8 gears ?! In a car with much hp. Lorries do this. You want to revv. Therefore you do not want to have 8 gears. Or you dont understand what the verb revv means.

The information given was pretty good except for the bit on cost. Although, it is true that a manual is cheaper to mass produce, it isn't always cheaper to maintain. Most automatic transmissions will last anywhere from 70,000 to 160,000 miles. Once it breaks down, yes, it's expensive. So expensive in fact, that by that point, the repair is sometimes more expensive than the value of the car, so the car gets scrapped. The caveat here is that manual transmissions operate with a clutch assembly. There are people who will wear out the clutch before their first year of ownership (depends on driver use and ability). Clutch replacement is not cheap, especially if it happens often enough during the ownership of the vehicle and/or the clutch is for an expensive/exotic car. Manuals aren't exactly bulletproof either, sometimes they also need to be rebuilt which can almost be as expensive as some automatics.

during my time, everyone had to learn the manual transmission, and so I did and drove my mum's car for years, it was only much later that I purchased my first car that was automatic. However, just a year ago my car was drenched in a flash flood, and I had to borrow a car temporarily, it was manual once again, thankfully I still remember how to drive a manual, so it is a benefit that I learned the manual transmission first, whenever my automatic is out I can easily rent a manual for much cheaper prices.
Driving schools nowadays provide both manual and automatic options, unlike my time. I don't know if it is a good thing or not, but I do think sometimes it is better to start with something more traditional and then move on to whatever one prefers for daily and personal use.

I'm not so sure about that with cvts and I'd rather have a manual transmission instead. It depends on what you want from a car. Most of my driving (in Kenya and South Sudan) is off road so manual is far better for me. Also, when you're driving old vehicles in extreme conditions and something goes wrong far from help (as it often does), you can start a manual vehicle by towing it or pushing it down a hill, which you can't do with an automatic.

If you do not like driving the choice becomes moot. If you aren't really interested in anything but the difference in mechanical torque applications. I hope you will find a self driving car and just enjoy yourself from there.
There's no need for people who do not *want* to actually drive to be forced to learn how and then then become disinterested to the point they might be distracted by phone/make-up application/whatever and endanger themselves or others if intelligent systems are in place to drive on their behalf.

Automatics are more popular because people only look at the first few years of ownership which is under warranty. At best you'll save $50 a year on gasoline by choosing the auto but then when the car reaches 100k miles you'll have to pony up 5 grand for a new transmission. This is why manuals hold their value better on the used market in my observation.

On rough roads, mountain roads, snowy roads, off roads in 4X4, manuals are my preference. Driving "styles" make the biggest difference. In slow and congested traffic, in a manual you just gear down and relax, don't worry about shifting up until there's room to do so. Autos have gotten a lot smoother, but still are potential weird on grades and at just the wrong speeds. And none I ever met can creep for beans. The clutch is no issue if you learned to use it properly, no riding it when gearing down. Autos are great for city traffic, suburban and urban streets, and driving people prone to motion sickness.

The whole "Europe is superior because we drive standard" rhetoric is so backwards its laughable. Comparable to a person riding a horse laughing at someone riding in a steam engine. "Haha you have to do less work because your technology is more advanced, so stupid." I've driven both for a decade. They can both be fun, but acting as if a continent is superior to another on the basis of a vehicles less advances transmission is borderline moronic. Comfort items in cars evolved differently in different markets. The Hydromatic developed in Detroit in the 40s and 50s quickly became common because US cars offered base models with individual options. You could buy the big ticket option of automatic for +$300 and forgo the clock, tach, better upholstery fabric, .... That would nickle and dime easily to $300 (about a thousand by 1980)
Air conditioning was the same in the 50s and 60s.
Typical European "people's cars" were pretty bare bones and rough in the 50s/60s. Sure a Rolls or Benz were super cars, but a Morris Minor/Mini, Renault, Fiat or VW were tinny, old 30s tech and rattly. If a hydromatic was even offered it was as much as the cost of the car. It made little sense, especially as over half the population on the continent and UK only "drove" a bus or train seat until the 70s.
      By then habits had settled.
I live in the US and have owned manuals since I was 16 in 77. However my Mom learned to drive on a 3 on the tree manual Ford, but by my childhood would never again consider driving a stick shift.

The fuel economy is very good especially on the open roads. With a four cylinder engine, a manual transmission gives the driver that extra power needed for hills by using the proper gear. Manual transmission requires the driver to pay more attention to his driving whereas driving is no effortless with automatic transmission that fatigue sets in on longer drives. I know that eventually within the next ten years or so cars will no longer be sold with manual transmissions as an option.

l do the same & since l use "Read the Road" (the term the cop that taught me used) l slow down earlier than most since l work out what most drivers are doing & using the gearbox l don't often use the brakes (l can drive on known roads without ever needing to use my brakes from start to parking in my garage, a skill l still practise) I have been yield at by cars pulling up beside me to use my brakes saying they almost hit me as they didn't know l was slowing down. Why? if they were paying attention to the road & driving to the traffic flow they should have noticed me slowing down before almost rear ending me. l also drive a 5 speed Toyota Corolla but with just under 140,000 kms on it (about 83,000 miles) :)

You have good feeling to set the gear on all types of driving condition and take advantage on engine braking

Remember they started charging more for manual transmission's in new cars when it was the opposite in the early days. Manuel transmission is for the driving enthusiast, not the every day commuter.

In south east asia (SEA) A/T models cost anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000 more in most cars. And if you know about SEA economy, most of us only get $1,000-2,000 USD per year if you're in the average working class

That is NOT true. Manual transmission of the same model is less costlier vs its automatic sibling

I like a manual for the simple reason that i can attune to what the car is doing mechanically.
Boundaries are easier to find when it comes to the more sporty side of driving (even in my Aygo, yes).
You have to feel what the car is doing when you drive manually, your first car should always be a manual.
It makes you a better driver, period.

I find automatic cars less safe to drive. I was just talking with my friend about driving manual in my German class since we are like the only 2 people in the school who know how to drive manual. And we both agree that driving a manual keeps us more alert then driving a automatic. Then behind us some girl chimes in with a "I could never drive manual I need to be able to use my phone". You guessed it her name is Megan.
