2:58 The audibook thing drives me crazy cause it'd be like telling something who used a computer to type their book that they didnt actually write a book because its only writing of you write by hand.
I really think that a LOT of the book community needs to chill with the self policing when it comes to the little things. We absolutely need to continue calling out bigotry and reviewers/authors behavior when needed, but when it comes to the little things (how we set goals, how we display books, how an individual person spends their money etc), I truly think we need to chill.
The audiobook part killed! Someone *just* tried to shame me about listening to audiobooks. 😂 Time to sit down and read a book with your eyes is a luxury.
I personally cannot stand the idea of rainbow shelves for myself but then I remember that I organize my (fiction) shelves based on how much I like a book/series (favorites at eye level, fondness decreasing as we approach the floor) so I have absolutely no room to talk because my way of organizing makes equally little sense to anyone who isn’t me. As long as you (general) can find what you’re looking for when you’re looking for it, who cares what your shelves look like?
I thought I'd never do rainbow shelves but I have a small cube organizer and I did a tbr row in rainbow and I kind of love it? I'm moving soon and trying to decide how I'm gonna reorganise when the time comes😅
Maybe it's just because I'm an old lady, but who has time to dedicate so much energy to what other folks are doing, how they're reading or decorating, etc.? That's energy you can be using to focus on what actually matters...YOU. Your life, your aesthetics, your enjoyment of whatever hobby you're into. Sure, have opinions. Discuss them, even. But gatekeeping is just an expression of your own narrow viewpoint and an avoidance of accepting the chaotic beauty of the world around you. Everyone deserves to live in comfort and happiness, and that looks VERY different for each of us. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it also took more than one set of hands.
80% of social media is people minding other people’s business. Lovely message but outrage and debate fuel the machine eg. Rome was built by a 1000yr slave-state. We can leave that turn of phrase in the ruins of empire.
80% of social media is people minding other peoples business. Lovely message but outrage and debate remain the preferred fuels of the overlords eg. Rome was built in a 1000yr by the servus breaking their bodies and dying in droves. We can leave that turn of phrase in the ruins of empire don’t you think?
I used to be SO judgy when I was younger. I’ve read my whole life so I definitely had a superiority complex to new readers or people who had different habits from me. I’m so glad I’m not a darn airhead anymore 🤣. For several years now, I just mind my business. If no one is being hurt and no one asked for my opinion, I just let them be. Do I think the hundreds of kindle accessories are necessary or do I collect books, for example? No but also it’s their money and those same people generally aren’t judging me for having a bare kindle and a library card. We can all just vibe.
jess you are so funny girl. every single one of these videos sounds EXACTLY like this, complete with the ridiculous level of anger 😭😭it’s crazy that other people have the energy to get so pissed off about things that Do Not matter
People really do be up in everybody else’s business about their reading and book habits, it’s wild!! Also the shelves look very pretty. I’m not strong enough to do that bc I’d never be able to find anything 😔 skill issue
While going through hundreds of people’s “Best Books of 2024” videos, I can’t tell you the asinine drivel I’ve heard, just in people’s intros. Most common are, “I read 25 books this year because I’m not going to lie and say I read 100 books like these other girls. That’s impossible.” Or “I’m posting this on January 1st, and I know that’s sacrilege for some of you. But I’m a purist. What if I read my best book on December 31st? These other booktubers don’t think about that” 🤦🏻♀️😡
I'm just going to link this video every time I come across online bookish discourse. It'll save me a ton of mental energy this year when these people decide to be silly.
You are effortlessly funny omg lol. But I agree, as long as people aren't out here burning down bookstores I mostly don't care what they do. "Look at this shelf! I've read every..... LOOK AT THIS SHELF!!" 😂 Loved this!
Love the rainbow shelves! I don't care how long it takes to find a book in my own rainbow shelves, it could take me a week looking for a book i forgot i already unhauled and i wouldn't give them up. 🌈
Yes. Also i remember being early adopt or podcast and friends who now have podcasts were like. So you just can't listen to music like a normal person. What are these folks even talking about. Literally my eyes are going bad and watching reading on screens doesnt help so i am going to have my audiobook version and don't let me want to read a popular book and libby has 35 week wait on physical or e-book and the audiobook is just sitting there with no wait .....i think its just an exposure issue bc Audible was kind of paywall to my introduction i can see others not knowing how that works and definitely people who are sensitive to narration quality or dont concentrate with aural information are going to hate... I wish Libby had more marketing but there are people who will only buy books at Barnes or Amazon. Happy New Year!
@@Fantasie891Playing with the speed and listening while doing something else are how I manage. I had to find a way to break into audiobooks because I had a two hour (each way) drive every week and music and drama commentary were not cutting it as listening material for that whole way.
I love your rainbow shelves SO much! They just make me happy to look at. Tried to do a rainbow shelve once but had to learn the hard way that 99% of the books I own have a black, dark blue, white or beige cover. That's not a rainbow! I cried for an hour. 😭
The first time I did rainbow shelves was a surprising experiment - it felt so refreshing and cheerful that splitting up the series didn't bother me at all. 'Mind your business' 2025. It's a good wish.
😂😂😂😂😂 Thanks for the laughs. Now, imagine the person watching this with their lips pursed, holding their mug in front of their face without taking a sip, violently shaking their head in agreement. Missing the point completely. They suck. That person sucks. 😂😂😂😂
It's fascinating how much of the discourse you're parodying is about buying books or the format one's buy the books in. As an American I can't help but throwing our current political and economic landscape in the mix and wondering if we're just seeing a lot of frustration over inflation and the required cut backs most of us have to make so we can afford essentials. Could totally be a projection, I know all of it is stuff I've seen habitually come up. But I did notice more of it this year than other years.
Not projection we ve been taught to consume and moneys are not moneying of course people are pissy I just saw video of women complain about free gifts for her kids that other people purchased. I was trying to give grace like maybe people shouldn't take on gifts if they cant buy what kids wanted but it sounded more like parents wanted iPads and flat screens. I dont know it was bad look
I'm a "by alpha" type, so seeing those rainbow color shelves gives me a minor pang of anxiety. That's on me though. 😅 fun video, it really is absurd how judgy people can get about the littlest things
Same! It would drive me crazy (plus I don't have enough different colors to make it look cool) but what is up with people making comments about bookshelves that aren't their own? Why would they care that much?
This video is great, I laughed so much. 😂 I don’t think it’s possible for some people to shut their mouths and stop saying these things. We can hope though!
i must be following the right people because i only saw my first real "audiobooks aren't reading" comment last week. and those girlies are seething about it! they need to touch grass, maybe take a lil run, join a boxing class-- just get that aggressive energy out somewhere else 😂
Loving the videoloving the vid, Jess! On some real ish, I've about McF*ckin had it with the whole "either we look for deeper meaning in books, or it's fun" crowd-at this point it feels do disingenuous and is basically ONLY trotted out whenever people are critically engaging with what they read.

ngl you had me for the rainbow shelf thing, I don't beef with anyone but I do have a neuroses with my own shelves... lol love your videos even though I don't comment much
I can only imagine people who are saying “AUDIOBOOKS ARENT READING, THEYRE LISTENING” also go up to people in wheelchairs on a walk and say “ACTUALLY MAAM YOURE ROLLING”
