Must agree. The way i do it is i hand shuffle once or twice at the beginning of my opponents turn then look at my hand then set it down. There is no need to continuesly hand shuffle during a game.
I play Magic, and so on I’ve been from the Yugioh! scene for awhile now. These kinda videos along with Farfa’s and Dzeff’s deck-building lectures are still useful. Card theory is just so practical, and so are common etiquette practices and travel safeties. Eh, thanks lol
I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in while and I high-key miss it 😭 I used to play with my brothers but both of them got rid of their cards so I have no one to play with 😭💀
Read the cards. Hell, I tend to read a card 3 or more times before I buy it. One time I made a whole deck which didn't work like I thought because I assumed sacrificing a monster for extra deck plays counted as tributing said monster
I try and always keep track my opponents, effects, so they don't mistake some level of protection or negate, and I keep track of almost every aspect of my own effects
I remember back in middle school, I use my Tachyon Chaos Hole against someone incorrectly because the Destroy as many "Face-Up" cards on the field as possible part and thought it destroys everything like their face downs. If I had the chance, I want to forfeit that win I had from that match to him. So yeah, I do agree that we should read our cards.
For me I always check prices right before I make a trade or when ever someone pulls something out of my binder I check the price and with stuff I see I check the price so it is a fair and equal to make sure I am not getting scammed and the person that I am trading I am not scamming then cause scamming is just a wrong thing
I don't care if a card I own is worth a lot of money, personally. I'm willing to trade a more expensive card I don't need for a cheaper one that I do need because I only place value on the cards based on their usefulness in my deck builds. For me it's all about the game... otherwise it's just a piece of cardboard as far as I'm concerned!
I always play YuGiOh with my friends I've never played in a tournament but you're tips I'm going to send those videos to my two friends who I play Yu-Gi-Oh with and one day we might go into tournaments so it been very helpful
I just started watching your channel, I'm primarily a Magic player and some of these practices are bizarre to me, not that they're bizzare but people aren't doing a lot of these things already.
Reading your cards is DEFINITELY the most important thing. I played Magic growing up, which is a much less out of control game, but even then you can easily overlook something. For years my best friend played a deck focused on flanking: "after a creature attacks, the blocking creature gets -1/-1 until the end of the turn". Somehow we both read that as "when attacking AND blocking", as in whenever I would attack him my creature would lose power and defense.... We played like that for literally years. Imagine the amount of games I've lost that I probably should have won.
About the "read card effects" I love it when ppl activate cards that target a monster, against a monster that cannot be targeted and be like "huh? Why cant I destroy -Obelisk- with sakuretsu armor?" Just as an example
This helps me alot even today, I find some card text hard since my mind sometimes doesn't understand it right away, one example today when i write this is Uria's trap card (i forgot the name of it) but i struggled with its text still i tried it out
Something that has to stop is when people play like there's no tomorrow. I have to stop them and say "hey slow down" its hard to respond or make an accurate play when they are playing at full speed.
Someone got super salty at my locals. He had a full binder of Ghost Rares and he wanted cards equal to WHAT HE PAID! He said he paid 120$ on a Ghost Rare that wasn’t worth near that much and wanted cards of mine that were equal to 120$. So crazy
I mean. Some of those ghost rares are real short print. I collect duel terminal and star cards but ive hesitated on starting on ghost rares as ive only pulled Red Eyes Metal Flair Dragon and people value the rest way too high. I understand the appeal of the rarity though. Sick cards.
@@killerkal0293 Sadly I was opening a bunch of packs with my friend and he had bought the particular pack and I had opened it. My packs had poopy pulls. Lol He uses it as a trade offer all the time to try to get stuff off me. I might do it one day.
when trading you should also check the condition of the card because the slightest bit of ware on the card could make a $50 card be like a $5 card instead since I was once a collector I always checked that
Paul keep up the great work and great advice, as a returning player I highly appreciate it. I have learned a great deal from your videos and am hoping to join my first tournament soon!
GOOD LORD I HATE THIS. In any card game, it makes absolutely no sense to constantly shuffle your hand. Once in a while is fine, but making this a constant thing every turn is annoying. I already cannot tell what cards are in your hand, so it makes no sense to keep doing this.
In regards to knowing your cards, this is why I like YGO so much. I use it to test new decks or to edit my main deck to learn possible nuances of new archetypes or specific card interactions. And usually when I do test runs its multiple times against my friends multiple decks just to get a hang of how it works and also to make sure YGO doesn't bug out on an effect because its happened a few times in duels.
Declaring phases is definitely a big one for me. If I’m sitting there with particular hand traps and know the opponent has cards that activate in certain phases then I want to know when they’re ending one phase and entering another. Declaring when the battle phase is being entered and ended because Evenly Matched is to hand yet at no other time doesn’t suffice. I have zero issue calling judges over because the opponent has failed to do so.
I had the problem when I was new to playing where I would go through phases too quickly and my opponent would be like "woah back up a sec, I have things to do" then shut my turn down. I have learned now to declare phases and ask for a response after every play I make
When I was a kid, I had pulled a Dark Paladin from 1 Magicians force booster. Then at a tournament, around 4 older kids surrounded me, acted nice and asked could they see my deck and boom. It was gone. I was even checking out peoples binders after, and I actually found my card because nobody had it and it had a bend in the corner. The guy said it was sold to him just earlier. Be careful guys. I still haven't gotten over that. I loved that card so much :(
I was playing Yu-Gi-Oh onces....before people started to cheat me or steal from me, imagine I was about 8-10 years old and I was playing with "friends" due to the fact that no one ever wanted to trade me fairly other then 1 actual friend.( for example I would trade an card that's like blue eyes white dragon and they'll be like urgh I'll trade you mystical elf for it....so I never traded card for them) there's were 6 people I played Yu-Gi-Oh with they were 9-12 years old but there was 1 day I played with 1 of the guys out of there group and we made an bet who ever loses has to give up their best card and mine was black luster soldier of envy and he was doing he's blue eyes white dragon 1st edition secret rare or ultra rare, but I didn't know that he does it by the anime and not by an real duel and of course he won due to summoning like 3 blue eyes without Tributing them but I told him I didn't agree with him at all, but he kept saying it’s fair and he won the bet after that he kept getting angrier every time he said it, finally he just snatch the card from me. I found out later without realizing that he snatch it and swapped it out with some other cards, then asked me to help him bring he's cards in. later I saw the card, immediately I took it back. After that I stopped playing with him......after writing this I guess I didn't really steal the card from him, I took back what was mine hahaha.
If there's anything I'm guilty of, its "Reading your cards." Sometimes I'll add something new to my deck and test it with my friends. Then, I realize that I could've changed the entire duel if I read the card correctly. The lesson I learned, as a returning player, Yugioh is easily a game that can be lost if 1 card is misused.
Does anyone know a place where I can get cheap card sleeves. I've had my cards for about 4 years and there in good condition, but I'm starting to get worried.
Only went to one regional, but first game, there’s people dueling to my right. Kid A goes to kid B “oh that’s an awesome Pot of Avarice.” Both players have generic white sleeves. They play their set and finish before mine. Kid A packs up and leaves. Kid B is packing up and is like “where’s my Pot of Avarice?!” Judge comes over and ends up watching my set so he can search our stuff for the missing card. Might be decent to have somewhat unique sleeves.
I've got a suggestion for everyone that doesn't like the hand shuffling- slow your game down. I've typically noticed that the hand shufflers are hyperactive, impatient duelists and they play at a break neck pace. They would make me nervous and I'd play more poorly and not ask to read cards I wasn't familiar with because I felt like I had to go fast too. Once I ignored it and started taking my time and thinking things through I started to do better.
Problem with the "Check your prices" is that a lot people that i've seen start to pout the moment you start to look at Ebay or cardmarket. They usual say things "Do you not trust me?" or "Okay, no trade. I hate ebay/cardmarket". Had that a lot in regionals when I went to check prices for trades. Each time I go to an event now I just grab my binder and list down every single price in it and put a note in the binder slot showing the price considering how much people seem to hate you checking prices.
Been watching all of these videos because watching you guys so much got me back into the game going to my local card shop for the first time next week !
1. Exactly. When me and my group had our own tourneys I always made sure we actually kept track of points with pen and paper or an app just because it was a slightly more competitive thing, and if I went to an actual tournament I would do the same. That stuffs important when you're in a competitive scene. 2. How many people know about Stratos Spell&Trap destruction effect? There are so many cases of cards being a lot more or a lot less versatile than you think or just not working in certain ways because people don't read or even don't understand the meaning of the effect. I'm guilty of this to, I never realized the Egyptian Gods and Star Eater said that NOTHING can be chained to their summonings so cards like Zolga and Precious Cards From Beyond don't work with the Gods and you can't use Ra to summon Star Eater and get Immortal Phoenix out of the GY. 3. This is why I always check prices of cards that seem broken. Some shop tried to offer me 25 dollars for a near mint Ash Blossom and Ghost Ogre when they were at 40 and 15 at the time respectively. Later on a different shop offered me 38 for both when Ghost Ogre went down to 12 and my. They made a decent 14 and I got 38 rather than the other shop offering me less than half of thr value of both cards. You have to be careful out there. 4. I've had plenty of time with me and my dad arguing about rulings and such to know to never just think what your opponent is doing makes sense. I once thought you could One for One Relinquished(I was maybe 15 at the time) and he used to think card effects flipped Monsters for their Flip effects. We both learned a few things since then. 5. Always keep an eye on it or have a trusted friend with you to watch it for you if you need to use the bathroom or something.
That's why I run a deck heals my opponent, but with cards that change the heal to damage. And I mostly use artifact monsters, with cards that chain with the artifacts.
That happened to me at my first local where players didn’t keep track of their life points. I got crushed, so it didn’t matter anyway. Nobody reads the cards either.
1: I have an app for that. 2: Asking to read your opponents cards takes alot of time and can be annoying 3: I think I got some valuable ones 4: Don't trust your opponent unless you cut their deck 5: Humans are sinners 6: Blue Eyes White Dragon is best dragon
I love Yu-Gi-Oh a lot, but I mostly play Magic The Gathering. I noticed that these five tips can also be applied to Magic as well! That probably wasn't your intention, but it's just something I noticed. 😃
Whenever I go to a yugioh! tournament, or a duel at my LGS, I bring my backpack with my main deck, my extra deck, and ONE trade binder in it and keep it on me at all times. There’s too many people lurking around at these places waiting for an opportunity to take stuff that’s been left unattended. So when you’re at these places, don’t leave your stuff unattended because that’s how people lose valuable cards to these thieves.
I’ve almost kicked a pair of guys asses at my locals one time because all they do is show up to “trade” and try to rip people off. I caught them doing it red handed once and got them thrown out. Makes me sick that people like that exist.

EXACTLY!! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE AND I HATE IT SO MUCH!
Must agree. The way i do it is i hand shuffle once or twice at the beginning of my opponents turn then look at my hand then set it down. There is no need to continuesly hand shuffle during a game.

Me: read your cards? Really who wouldn’t read their cards.....”gets flashbacks”
What if there was a TED talk specifically for Yu-Gi-Oh?
“Read your cards” MST in a nutshell.
I always had to deal with this someone in middle school and then he gets mad for every time I try to tell him how cards actually work
For me I always check prices right before I make a trade or when ever someone pulls something out of my binder I check the price and with stuff I see I check the price so it is a fair and equal to make sure I am not getting scammed and the person that I am trading I am not scamming then cause scamming is just a wrong thing

I didn’t even know any of this stuff but I appreciate it.
I find it funny that the video name is stuff we should stop doing.... But the video is saying this is what we need to do
It's just clickbait.
Team APS I figured that, I wasn't mad or anything I legit actually found it funny 😂 lol
About the "read card effects"
I love it when ppl activate cards that target a monster, against a monster that cannot be targeted and be like "huh? Why cant I destroy -Obelisk- with sakuretsu armor?"

Great video thanks for the advice greatly enjoy the videos
Yes, I agree. I hate the hand shuffling tactic. It’s very distracting and it gives the opportunity for the opponent to do something underhanded.
Sick cards.
Justin Workman nice. The only ghost rare I’ve ever pulled is a Star Eater and Naturia Barkion
@@killerkal0293 Sadly I was opening a bunch of packs with my friend and he had bought the particular pack and I had opened it. My packs had poopy pulls. Lol He uses it as a trade offer all the time to try to get stuff off me. I might do it one day.
I can't fathom not keeping track of mine and my opponent's LPs...
I don't even play YuGiOh, but good on you for calling these people out
When you take a backpack, take one with one of those code locks on it
when trading you should also check the condition of the card because the slightest bit of ware on the card could make a $50 card be like a $5 card instead since I was once a collector I always checked that
Paul keep up the great work and great advice, as a returning player I highly appreciate it. I have learned a great deal from your videos and am hoping to join my first tournament soon!
constant hand shuffling!
YES THAT SHIT IS SO ANNOYING
GOOD LORD I HATE THIS. In any card game, it makes absolutely no sense to constantly shuffle your hand. Once in a while is fine, but making this a constant thing every turn is annoying. I already cannot tell what cards are in your hand, so it makes no sense to keep doing this.
True, It makes me wanna smack the cards out of their hand
*does it intimidate you* jkjk same
@@chaoszero11 to be fair, I do it because I have a nervous disorder that makes my hands shake, so I do it to keep my hands steady
Essentially, observe everything while playing.
opponent: "steals a card from my deck"

I agree with 2 so much i used to use the kaiser sea snakes effect and keep 2500 atk not 0 for example
I have learned now to declare phases and ask for a response after every play I make
honestly if I ever went to a big tournament I'd just bring my deck, my mat and my dice
You guys have high quality videos!
I loved that card so much :(
Completely agree with everything you said thank you.
I've never been to a Yugioh tournament. A lot of players would gather in a local food court each Saturday and just play until security kicks us out.
Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate your honesty and information. Please keep doing what you do. 👍
Reading the cards is really important because it can allow you with advantages if you just play your cards in a specific order.
Nice background blur, makes the video look a lot more professional. Also is there a website similar to Inked that does custom card sleeves?
You guys need to start an academy BIG TIME. Y'all understand the game, have the patience, and have awesome content.
Does anyone know a place where I can get cheap card sleeves. I've had my cards for about 4 years and there in good condition, but I'm starting to get worried.
Go to walmart or target or go online on Amazon
Tanks for the tips. Hello from Brazil.
Been watching all of these videos because watching you guys so much got me back into the game going to my local card shop for the first time next week !
I wish people would stop that weird hand flick thing people do with cards. Look at most deck profiles and you see it all the time! Drives me nuts
Or the flick where you place it from the hand to the field, that usednto drive me nuts but I have become one of those people 😂
I keep pen and paper record of BOTH players LP, both for my own reference and also so nobody can cheat me on that.
Yeah I lost a duel because I didn’t keep track of life points
That happened to me at my first local where players didn’t keep track of their life points. I got crushed, so it didn’t matter anyway. Nobody reads the cards either.
1: I have an app for that.
2: Asking to read your opponents cards takes alot of time and can be annoying
3: I think I got some valuable ones
4: Don't trust your opponent unless you cut their deck
5: Humans are sinners
6: Blue Eyes White Dragon is best dragon
PASS TURN. why was that the most incredible way to end a yugioh video? and why did i enjoy it so much
Thanks for the advice.
I love Yu-Gi-Oh a lot, but I mostly play Magic The Gathering. I noticed that these five tips can also be applied to Magic as well! That probably wasn't your intention, but it's just something I noticed. 😃
This advice can be used for nearly any tcg card game.
never played in a tournament, but i always keep track of my lp and effects
if i dont play with my pals,i play reverse of arcadia or tf 5
Great info as always Paul
